1 І був Божий ковчег у филистимській землі сім місяців.

And the ark of Jehovah is in the field of the Philistines seven months,

2 І покликали филистимляни жерців та ворожбитів, говорячи: Що робити з Господнім ковчегом? Скажіть нам, як відіслати його на його місце?

and the Philistines call for priests and for diviners, saying, `What do we do to the ark of Jehovah? let us know wherewith we send it to its place?'

3 А ті сказали: Якщо ви відсилаєте ковчега Ізраїлевого Бога, то не відсилайте його порожньо, але конче принесіть Йому жертву за провину, тоді будете вилікувані, і ви пізнаєте, чому не відступає Його рука від вас.

And they say, `If ye are sending away the ark of the God of Israel, ye do not send it away empty; for ye do certainly send back to Him a guilt-offering; then ye are healed, and it hath been known to you why His hand doth not turn aside from you.'

4 І ті спитали: Яка ж та жертва за провину, що ми принесемо Йому? А ті відказали: За числом филистимських володарів п'ять золотих болячок та п'ять золотих мишей. Бо одна пораза для всіх вас та для ваших володарів.

And they say, `What the guilt-offering which we send back to Him?' and they say, `The number of the princes of the Philistines -- five golden emerods, and five golden mice -- for one plague to you all, and to your princes,

5 І зробіть подоби ваших болячок та подоби ваших мишей, що вигублюють землю, і воздайте славу Ізраїлевому Богові, може Він полегчить Свою руку з-над вас і з-над ваших богів та з-над вашого краю.

and ye have made images of your emerods, and images of your mice that are corrupting the land, and have given honour to the God of Israel; it may be He doth lighten His hand from off you, and from off your gods, and from off your land;

6 І чого ви будете робити запеклими свої серця, як робили запеклим серце своє Єгипет та фараон? Чи ж не тоді, як Він чинив дивні речі з ними, не відпустили їх, і вони пішли?

and why do ye harden your heart as the Egyptians and Pharaoh hardened their heart? do they not -- when He hath rolled Himself upon them -- send them away, and they go?

7 А тепер візьміть, і зробіть одного нового воза, і візьміть дві дійні корові, що на них не накладалося ярма, і запряжіть ті корови до воза, а їхні телята відведете від них додому.

`And now, take and make one new cart, and two suckling kine, on which a yoke hath not gone up, and ye have bound the kine in the cart, and caused their young ones to turn back from after them to the house,

8 І візьмете Господнього ковчега, та й поставите його на воза, а золоті речі, що ви принесете Йому жертвою за провину, покладете в скрині збоку її. І відпустите його, і він піде.

and ye have taken the ark of Jehovah, and put it on the cart, and the vessels of gold which ye have returned to Him -- a guilt-offering -- ye put in a coffer on its side, and have sent it away, and it hath gone;

9 І побачите: Якщо він увійде до Бет-Шемешу дорогою до своєї границі, він зробив нам це велике зло. А якщо ні, то пізнаємо, що не його рука доторкнулася нас, випадок то був нам.

and ye have seen, if the way of its own border it goeth up to Beth-Shemesh -- He hath done to us this great evil; and if not, then we have known that His hand hath not come against us; an accident it hath been to us.'

10 І зробили ті люди так. І взяли вони дві дійні корові, і запрягли їх до воза, а їхніх телят замкнули вдома.

And the men do so, and take two suckling kine, and bind them in the cart, and their young ones they have shut up in the house;

11 І поставили вони Господнього ковчега на воза, і скриню, і золоті миші, і подоби їхніх болячок.

and they place the ark of Jehovah upon the cart, and the coffer, and the golden mice, and the images of their emerods.

12 І корови пішли просто дорогою до Бет-Шемешу. Ішли вони однією битою дорогою та все ревли, і не відхилялися ні праворуч, ні ліворуч. А филистимські володарі йшли за ними аж до границі Бет-Шемешу.

And the kine go straight in the way, on the way to Beth-Shemesh, in one highway they have gone, going and lowing, and have not turned aside right or left; and the princes of the Philistines are going after them unto the border of Beth-Shemesh.

13 А люди Бет-Шемешу жали пшеницю в долині. І звели вони очі свої та й побачили ковчега, і зраділи, що побачили!

And the Beth-Shemeshites are reaping their wheat-harvest in the valley, and they lift up their eyes, and see the ark, and rejoice to see.

14 А віз увійшов на поле бетшемешанина Ісуса, та й став там, а там був великий камінь. І вони накололи дров із воза, а корів принесли цілопаленням для Господа.

And the cart hath come in unto the field of Joshua the Beth-Shemeshite, and standeth there, and there a great stone, and they cleave the wood of the cart, and the kine they have caused to ascend -- a burnt-offering to Jehovah.

15 А Левити зняли Господнього ковчега та скриню, що була з ним, що в нім були золоті речі, та й поставили при великому камені. А люди Бет-Шемешу принесли цілопалення, і приносили того дня жертви для Господа.

And the Levites have taken down the ark of Jehovah, and the coffer which with it, in which the vessels of gold, and place on the great stone; and the men of Beth-Shemesh have caused to ascend burnt-offerings and sacrifice sacrifices in that day to Jehovah;

16 А п'ять филистимських володарів бачили це, і вернулися того дня до Екрону.

and the five princes of the Philistines have seen, and turn back Ekron, on that day.

17 А оце ті золоті болячки, що филистимляни звернули Господеві жертвою за провину: одна за Ашдод, одна за Газу, одна за Ашкелон, одна за Ґат, одна за Екрон.

And these the golden emerods which the Philistines have sent back -- a guilt-offering to Jehovah: for Ashdod one, for Gaza one, for Ashkelon one, for Gath one, for Ekron one;

18 А золоті миші були за числом усіх филистимських міст п'ятьох володарів, від міста твердинного й аж до безмурного села, і аж до великого каменя, що на ньому поставили Господнього ковчега, і він знаходиться аж до цього дня на полі бет-шемешанина Ісуса.

and the golden mice -- the number of all the cities of the Philistines -- for the five princes, from the fenced city even unto the hamlet of the villages, even unto the great meadow on which they placed the ark of Jehovah -- unto this day in the field of Joshua the Beth-Shemeshite.

19 І вдарив Господь людей Бет-Шемешу, бо вони заглядали в Господній ковчег. І вибив Він між народом п'ятдесят тисяч чоловіка та сімдесят чоловіка. І був народ у жалобі, бо Господь ударив народ великою поразкою.

And He smiteth among the men of Beth-Shemesh, for they looked into the ark of Jehovah, yea, He smiteth among the people seventy men -- fifty chief men; and the people mourn, because Jehovah smote among the people -- a great smiting.

20 І сказали люди Бет-Шемешу: Хто зможе стати перед лицем Господа, Того Бога Святого? І до кого Він піде від нас?

And the men of Beth-Shemesh say, `Who is able to stand before Jehovah, this holy God? and unto whom doth He go up from us?'

21 І вони послали послів до мешканців Кір'ят-Єаріму, говорячи: Филистимляни вернули Господнього ковчега. Зійдіть, знесіть його до себе.

And they send messengers unto the inhabitants of Kirjath-Jearim, saying, `The Philistines have sent back the ark of Jehovah; come down, take it up unto you.'
