1 Î n al doilea an al domniei împăratului Darius, în prima zi a lunii a şasea, Cuvântul Domnului le-a vorbit prin profetul Hagai lui Zerub-Babel, fiul lui Şealtiel, guvernatorul lui Iuda, şi lui Iosua, fiul lui Iehoţadak, marele preot, astfel:

In the second year of Darius the king, in the sixth month, in the first day of the month, hath a word of Jehovah been by the hand of Haggai the prophet, unto Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and unto Joshua son of Josedech, the high priest, saying:

2 „ Aşa vorbeşte Domnul Oştirilor: «Poporul acesta zice că încă n-a venit vremea pentru rezidirea Casei Domnului.»“

Thus spake Jehovah of Hosts, saying: This people! -- they have said, `The time hath not come, The time the house of Jehovah to be built.'

3 A poi Cuvântul Domnului le-a vorbit prin profetul Hagai astfel:

And there is a word of Jehovah by the hand of Haggai the prophet, saying:

4 „ Dar pentru voi a venit oare vremea să locuiţi în case căptuşite cu lemn, în timp ce Casa aceasta este în ruine?“

Is it time for you -- you! To dwell in your covered houses, And this house to lie waste?

5 A cum, aşa vorbeşte Domnul Oştirilor: „Uitaţi-vă cu atenţie la căile voastre!

And now, thus said Jehovah of Hosts, Set your heart to your ways.

6 A ţi semănat mult, dar aţi adunat puţin! Mâncaţi, dar tot nu vă săturaţi! Beţi, dar tot nu vă potoliţi setea! Vă îmbrăcaţi, dar tot nu vă este cald, iar plata pe care o câştigaţi o puneţi într-o pungă spartă!“

Ye have sown much, and brought in little, To eat, and not to satiety, To drink, and not to drunkenness, To clothe, and none hath heat, And he who is hiring himself out, Is hiring himself for a bag pierced through.

7 A şa vorbeşte Domnul Oştirilor: „Uitaţi-vă cu atenţie la căile voastre!

Thus said Jehovah of Hosts: Set your heart to your ways.

8 D uceţi-vă la munte, aduceţi lemne şi rezidiţi Casa, ca astfel Eu să-Mi găsesc plăcerea în ea şi să fiu onorat, zice Domnul.

Go up the mountain, and ye have brought in wood, And build the house, and I am pleased with it. And I am honoured, said Jehovah.

9 V -aţi aşteptat la mult, dar iată că aţi adunat puţin, iar când aţi adus recolta acasă, am spulberat- o! De ce? zice Domnul Oştirilor. Deoarece Casa Mea zace în ruine, în timp ce fiecare dintre voi aleargă pentru casa lui!

Looking for much, and lo, little, And ye brought home, and I blew on it, Wherefore? -- an affirmation of Jehovah of Hosts, Because of My house that is waste, And ye are running -- each to his house,

10 D e aceea cerurile nu v-au mai dat roua, iar pământul nu şi-a mai dat recolta!

Therefore, over you refrained have the heavens from dew, And the land hath refrained its increase.

11 A m chemat seceta peste ţară, peste munţi şi peste grâne, peste must, peste ulei şi peste ceea ce rodeşte pământul, peste oameni, peste animale şi peste toată truda mâinilor voastre!“ Răspunsul poporului

And I proclaim draught on the land, And on the mountains, and on the corn, And on the new wine, and on the oil, And on what the ground doth bring forth, And on man, and on beast, And on all labour of the hands.'

12 A tunci Zerub-Babel, fiul lui Şealtiel, Iosua, fiul lui Iehoţadak, marele preot, şi întreaga rămăşiţă a poporului au ascultat de glasul Domnului, Dumnezeul lor, şi de cuvintele profetului Hagai, pentru că Domnul, Dumnezeul lor, îl trimisese. Şi poporul s-a temut de Domnul.

And Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, and Joshua son of Josedech, the high priest, and all the remnant of the people, do hearken to the voice of Jehovah their God, and unto the words of Haggai the prophet, as Jehovah their God had sent him, and the people are afraid of the face of Jehovah.

13 A poi Hagai, mesagerul Domnului, a spus poporului mesajul Domnului: „Eu sunt cu voi!“, zice Domnul.

And Haggai, messenger of Jehovah, in messages of Jehovah, speaketh to the people, saying: `I with you, an affirmation of Jehovah.'

14 A stfel Domnul a trezit duhul lui Zerub-Babel, fiul lui Şealtiel, guvernatorul lui Iuda, duhul lui Iosua, fiul lui Iehoţadak, marele preot, şi duhul întregii rămăşiţe a poporului. Ei au venit şi au început lucrarea la Casa Domnului Oştirilor, Dumnezeul lor,

And Jehovah doth stir up the spirit of Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua son of Josedech, the high priest, and the spirit of all the remnant of the people, and they come in, and do work in the house of Jehovah of Hosts their God,

15 î n a douăzeci şi patra zi a lunii a şasea, în al doilea an al domniei împăratului Darius.

in the twenty and fourth day of the sixth month, in the second year of Darius the king.
