1 N o primeiro dia do sexto mês do segundo ano do reinado de Dario, a palavra do Senhor veio por meio do profeta Ageu ao governador de Judá, Zorobabel, filho de Sealtiel, e ao sumo sacerdote Josué, filho de Jeozadaque, dizendo:

In the second year of Darius the king, in the sixth month, in the first day of the month, hath a word of Jehovah been by the hand of Haggai the prophet, unto Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and unto Joshua son of Josedech, the high priest, saying:

2 “ Assim diz o Senhor dos Exércitos: Este povo afirma: ‘Ainda não chegou o tempo de reconstruir a casa do Senhor ’”.

Thus spake Jehovah of Hosts, saying: This people! -- they have said, `The time hath not come, The time the house of Jehovah to be built.'

3 P or isso, a palavra do Senhor veio novamente por meio do profeta Ageu:

And there is a word of Jehovah by the hand of Haggai the prophet, saying:

4 “ Acaso é tempo de vocês morarem em casas de fino acabamento, enquanto a minha casa continua destruída?”

Is it time for you -- you! To dwell in your covered houses, And this house to lie waste?

5 A gora, assim diz o Senhor dos Exércitos: “Vejam aonde os seus caminhos os levaram.

And now, thus said Jehovah of Hosts, Set your heart to your ways.

6 V ocês têm plantado muito, e colhido pouco. Vocês comem, mas não se fartam. Bebem, mas não se satisfazem. Vestem-se, mas não se aquecem. Aquele que recebe salário, recebe-o para colocá-lo numa bolsa furada”.

Ye have sown much, and brought in little, To eat, and not to satiety, To drink, and not to drunkenness, To clothe, and none hath heat, And he who is hiring himself out, Is hiring himself for a bag pierced through.

7 A ssim diz o Senhor dos Exércitos: “Vejam aonde os seus caminhos os levaram!

Thus said Jehovah of Hosts: Set your heart to your ways.

8 S ubam o monte para trazer madeira. Construam o templo, para que eu me alegre e nele seja glorificado”, diz o Senhor.

Go up the mountain, and ye have brought in wood, And build the house, and I am pleased with it. And I am honoured, said Jehovah.

9 “ Vocês esperavam muito, mas, eis que veio pouco. E o que vocês trouxeram para casa eu dissipei com um sopro. E por que o fiz?”, pergunta o Senhor dos Exércitos. “Por causa do meu templo, que ainda está destruído, enquanto cada um de vocês se ocupa com a sua própria casa.

Looking for much, and lo, little, And ye brought home, and I blew on it, Wherefore? -- an affirmation of Jehovah of Hosts, Because of My house that is waste, And ye are running -- each to his house,

10 P or isso, por causa de vocês, o céu reteve o orvalho e a terra deixou de dar o seu fruto.

Therefore, over you refrained have the heavens from dew, And the land hath refrained its increase.

11 N os campos e nos montes provoquei uma seca que atingiu o trigo, o vinho, o azeite e tudo mais que a terra produz, e também os homens e o gado. O trabalho das mãos de vocês foi prejudicado”.

And I proclaim draught on the land, And on the mountains, and on the corn, And on the new wine, and on the oil, And on what the ground doth bring forth, And on man, and on beast, And on all labour of the hands.'

12 Z orobabel, filho de Sealtiel, o sumo sacerdote Josué, filho de Jeozadaque, e todo o restante do povo obedeceram à voz do Senhor, o seu Deus, por causa das palavras do profeta Ageu, a quem o Senhor, o seu Deus, enviara. E o povo temeu o Senhor.

And Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, and Joshua son of Josedech, the high priest, and all the remnant of the people, do hearken to the voice of Jehovah their God, and unto the words of Haggai the prophet, as Jehovah their God had sent him, and the people are afraid of the face of Jehovah.

13 E ntão Ageu, o mensageiro do Senhor, trouxe esta mensagem do Senhor para o povo: “Eu estou com vocês”, declara o Senhor.

And Haggai, messenger of Jehovah, in messages of Jehovah, speaketh to the people, saying: `I with you, an affirmation of Jehovah.'

14 A ssim o Senhor encorajou o governador de Judá, Zorobabel, filho de Sealtiel, o sumo sacerdote Josué, filho de Jeozadaque, e todo o restante do povo, e eles começaram a trabalhar no templo do Senhor dos Exércitos, o seu Deus,

And Jehovah doth stir up the spirit of Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua son of Josedech, the high priest, and the spirit of all the remnant of the people, and they come in, and do work in the house of Jehovah of Hosts their God,

15 n o vigésimo quarto dia do sexto mês do segundo ano do reinado de Dario.

in the twenty and fourth day of the sixth month, in the second year of Darius the king.
