1 O povo, ao ver que Moisés demorava a descer do monte, juntou-se ao redor de Arão e lhe disse: “Venha, faça para nós deuses que nos conduzam, pois a esse Moisés, o homem que nos tirou do Egito, não sabemos o que lhe aconteceu”.

And the people see that Moses is delaying to come down from the mount, and the people assemble against Aaron, and say unto him, `Rise, make for us gods who go before us, for this Moses -- the man who brought us up out of the land of Egypt -- we have not known what hath happened to him.'

2 R espondeu-lhes Arão: “Tirem os brincos de ouro de suas mulheres, de seus filhos e de suas filhas e tragam-nos a mim”.

And Aaron saith unto them, `Break off the rings of gold which in the ears of your wives, your sons, and your daughters, and bring in unto me;'

3 T odos tiraram os seus brincos de ouro e os levaram a Arão.

and all the people themselves break off the rings of gold which in their ears, and bring in unto Aaron,

4 E le os recebeu e os fundiu, transformando tudo num ídolo, que modelou com uma ferramenta própria, dando-lhe a forma de um bezerro. Então disseram: “Eis aí os seus deuses, ó Israel, que tiraram vocês do Egito!”

and he receiveth from their hand, and doth fashion it with a graving tool, and doth make it a molten calf, and they say, `These thy gods, O Israel, who brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.'

5 V endo isso, Arão edificou um altar diante do bezerro e anunciou: “Amanhã haverá uma festa dedicada ao Senhor ”.

And Aaron seeth, and buildeth an altar before it, and Aaron calleth, and saith, `A festival to Jehovah -- to-morrow;'

6 N a manhã seguinte, ofereceram holocaustos e sacrifícios de comunhão. O povo se assentou para comer e beber, e levantou-se para se entregar à farra.

and they rise early on the morrow, and cause burnt-offerings to ascend, and bring nigh peace-offerings; and the people sit down to eat and to drink, and rise up to play.

7 E ntão o Senhor disse a Moisés: “Desça, porque o seu povo, que você tirou do Egito, corrompeu-se.

And Jehovah saith unto Moses, `Go, descend, for thy people whom thou hast brought up out of the land of Egypt hath done corruptly,

8 M uito depressa se desviaram daquilo que lhes ordenei e fizeram um ídolo em forma de bezerro, curvaram-se diante dele, ofereceram-lhe sacrifícios, e disseram: ‘Eis aí, ó Israel, os seus deuses que tiraram vocês do Egito’”.

they have turned aside hastily from the way that I have commanded them; they have made for themselves a molten calf, and bow themselves to it, and sacrifice to it, and say, These thy gods, O Israel, who brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.'

9 D isse o Senhor a Moisés: “Tenho visto que este povo é um povo obstinado.

And Jehovah saith unto Moses, `I have seen this people, and lo, it a stiff-necked people;

10 D eixe-me agora, para que a minha ira se acenda contra eles, e eu os destrua. Depois farei de você uma grande nação”.

and now, let Me alone, and My anger doth burn against them, and I consume them, and I make thee become a great nation.'

11 M oisés, porém, suplicou ao Senhor, o seu Deus, clamando: “Ó Senhor, por que se acenderia a tua ira contra o teu povo, que tiraste do Egito com grande poder e forte mão?

And Moses appeaseth the face of Jehovah his God, and saith, `Why, O Jehovah, doth Thine anger burn against Thy people, whom Thou hast brought forth out of the land of Egypt with great power and with a strong hand?

12 P or que diriam os egípcios: ‘Foi com intenção maligna que ele os libertou, para matá-los nos montes e bani-los da face da terra’? Arrepende-te do fogo da tua ira! Tem piedade, e não tragas este mal sobre o teu povo!

why do the Egyptians speak, saying, For evil He brought them out to slay them among mountains, and to consume them from off the face of the ground? turn back from the heat of Thine anger, and repent of the evil against Thy people.

13 L embra-te dos teus servos Abraão, Isaque e Israel, aos quais juraste por ti mesmo: ‘Farei que os seus descendentes sejam numerosos como as estrelas do céu e lhes darei toda esta terra que lhes prometi, que será a sua herança para sempre’”.

`Be mindful of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Israel, Thy servants, to whom Thou hast sworn by Thyself, and unto whom Thou speakest: I multiply your seed as stars of the heavens, and all this land, as I have said, I give to your seed, and they have inherited to the age;'

14 E sucedeu que o Senhor arrependeu-se do mal que ameaçara trazer sobre o povo.

and Jehovah repenteth of the evil which He hath spoken of doing to His people.

15 E ntão Moisés desceu do monte, levando nas mãos as duas tábuas da aliança; estavam escritas em ambos os lados, frente e verso.

And Moses turneth, and goeth down from the mount, and the two tables of the testimony in his hand, tables written on both their sides, on this and on that they written;

16 A s tábuas tinham sido feitas por Deus; o que nelas estava gravado fora escrito por Deus.

and the tables are the work of God, and the writing is the writing of God, graven on the tables.

17 Q uando Josué ouviu o barulho do povo gritando, disse a Moisés: “Há barulho de guerra no acampamento”.

And Joshua heareth the voice of the people in their shouting, and saith unto Moses, `A noise of battle in the camp!'

18 R espondeu Moisés: “Não é canto de vitória, nem canto de derrota; mas ouço o som de canções!”

and he saith, `It is not the voice of the crying of might, nor is it the voice of the crying of weakness -- a voice of singing I am hearing.'

19 Q uando Moisés aproximou-se do acampamento e viu o bezerro e as danças, irou-se e jogou as tábuas no chão, ao pé do monte, quebrando-as.

And it cometh to pass, when he hath drawn near unto the camp, that he seeth the calf, and the dancing, and the anger of Moses burneth, and he casteth out of his hands the tables, and breaketh them under the mount;

20 P egou o bezerro que eles tinham feito e o destruiu no fogo; depois de moê-lo até virar pó, espalhou-o na água e fez com que os israelitas a bebessem.

and he taketh the calf which they have made, and burneth with fire, and grindeth until small, and scattereth on the face of the waters, and causeth the sons of Israel to drink.

21 E perguntou a Arão: “Que lhe fez esse povo para que você o levasse a tão grande pecado?”

And Moses saith unto Aaron, `What hath this people done to thee, that thou hast brought in upon it a great sin?'

22 R espondeu Arão: “Não te enfureças, meu senhor; tu bem sabes como esse povo é propenso para o mal.

and Aaron saith, `Let not the anger of my lord burn; thou -- thou hast known the people that it in evil;

23 E les me disseram: ‘Faça para nós deuses que nos conduzam, pois não sabemos o que aconteceu com esse Moisés, o homem que nos tirou do Egito’.

and they say to me, Make for us gods, who go before us, for this Moses -- the man who brought us up out of the land of Egypt -- we have not known what hath happened to him;

24 E ntão eu lhes disse: Quem tiver enfeites de ouro, traga-os para mim. O povo trouxe-me o ouro, eu o joguei no fogo e surgiu esse bezerro!”

and I say to them, Whoso hath gold, let them break off, and they give to me, and I cast it into the fire, and this calf cometh out.'

25 M oisés viu que o povo estava desenfreado e que Arão o tinha deixado fora de controle, tendo se tornado objeto de riso para os seus inimigos.

And Moses seeth the people that it unbridled, for Aaron hath made it unbridled for contempt among its withstanders,

26 E ntão ficou em pé, à entrada do acampamento, e disse: “Quem é pelo Senhor, junte-se a mim”. Todos os levitas se juntaram a ele.

and Moses standeth in the gate of the camp, and saith, `Who for Jehovah? -- unto me!' and all the sons of Levi are gathered unto him;

27 D eclarou-lhes também: “Assim diz o Senhor, o Deus de Israel: ‘Pegue cada um sua espada, percorra o acampamento, de tenda em tenda, e mate o seu irmão, o seu amigo e o seu vizinho’”.

and he saith to them, `Thus said Jehovah, God of Israel, Put each his sword by his thigh, pass over and turn back from gate to gate through the camp, and slay each his brother, and each his friend, and each his relation.'

28 F izeram os levitas conforme Moisés ordenou, e naquele dia morreram cerca de três mil dentre o povo.

And the sons of Levi do according to the word of Moses, and there fall of the people on that day about three thousand men,

29 D isse então Moisés: “Hoje vocês se consagraram ao Senhor, pois nenhum de vocês poupou o seu filho e o seu irmão, de modo que o Senhor os abençoou neste dia”.

and Moses saith, `Consecrate your hand to-day to Jehovah, for a man against his son, and against his brother, so as to bring on you to-day a blessing.'

30 N o dia seguinte Moisés disse ao povo: “Vocês cometeram um grande pecado. Mas agora subirei ao Senhor, e talvez possa oferecer propiciação pelo pecado de vocês”.

And it cometh to pass, on the morrow, that Moses saith unto the people, `Ye -- ye have sinned a great sin, and now I go up unto Jehovah, if so be I atone for your sin.'

31 A ssim, Moisés voltou ao Senhor e disse: “Ah, que grande pecado cometeu este povo! Fizeram para si deuses de ouro.

And Moses turneth back unto Jehovah, and saith, `Oh this people hath sinned a great sin, that they make to themselves a god of gold;

32 M as agora, eu te rogo, perdoa-lhes o pecado; se não, risca-me do teu livro que escreveste”.

and now, if Thou takest away their sin -- and if not -- blot me, I pray thee, out of Thy book which Thou hast written.'

33 R espondeu o Senhor a Moisés: “Riscarei do meu livro todo aquele que pecar contra mim.

And Jehovah saith unto Moses, `Whoso hath sinned against Me -- I blot him out of My book;

34 A gora vá, guie o povo ao lugar de que lhe falei, e meu anjo irá à sua frente. Todavia, quando chegar a hora de puni-los, eu os punirei pelos pecados deles”.

and now, go, lead the people whithersoever I have spoken to thee of; lo, My messenger goeth before thee, and in the day of my charging -- then I have charged upon them their sin.'

35 E o Senhor feriu o povo com uma praga porque quiseram que Arão fizesse o bezerro.

And Jehovah plagueth the people, because they made the calf which Aaron made.
