1 N aquela época não havia rei em Israel, e a tribo de Dã estava procurando um local onde estabelecer-se, pois ainda não tinha recebido herança entre as tribos de Israel.

In those days there is no king in Israel, and in those days the tribe of the Danite is seeking for itself an inheritance to inhabit, for hath not fallen to it unto that day in the midst of the tribes of Israel by inheritance.

2 E ntão enviaram cinco guerreiros de Zorá e de Estaol para espionarem a terra e explorá-la. Esses homens representavam todos os clãs da tribo. Disseram-lhes: “Vão, explorem a terra”. Os homens chegaram aos montes de Efraim e foram à casa de Mica, onde passaram a noite.

And the sons of Dan send, out of their family, five men of them, men, sons of valour, from Zorah, and from Eshtaol, to traverse the land, and to search it, and they say unto them, `Go, search the land;' and they come into the hill-country of Ephraim, unto the house of Micah, and lodge there.

3 Q uando estavam perto da casa de Mica, reconheceram a voz do jovem levita; aproximaram-se e lhe perguntaram: “Quem o trouxe para cá? O que você está fazendo neste lugar? Por que você está aqui?”

They with the household of Micah, and they have discerned the voice of the young man, the Levite, and turn aside there, and say to him, `Who hath brought thee hither? and what art thou doing in this and what to thee here?'

4 O jovem lhes contou o que Mica fizera por ele, e disse: “Ele me contratou, e eu sou seu sacerdote”.

And he saith unto them, `Thus and thus hath Micah done to me; and he hireth me, and I am to him for a priest.'

5 E ntão eles lhe pediram: “Pergunte a Deus se a nossa viagem será bem-sucedida”.

And they say to him, `Ask, we pray thee, at God, and we know whether our way is prosperous on which we are going.'

6 O sacerdote lhes respondeu: “Vão em paz. Sua viagem tem a aprovação do Senhor ”.

And the priest saith to them, `Go in peace; over-against Jehovah your way in which ye go.'

7 O s cinco homens partiram e chegaram a Laís, onde viram que o povo vivia em segurança, como os sidônios, despreocupado e tranqüilo, e gozava prosperidade, pois a sua terra não lhe deixava faltar nada. Viram também que o povo vivia longe dos sidônios e não tinha relações com nenhum outro povo.

And the five men go, and come in to Laish, and see the people which in its midst, dwelling confidently, according to the custom of Zidonians, quiet and confident; and there is none putting to shame in the land in thing, possessing restraint, and they far off from the Zidonians, and have no word with man.

8 Q uando voltaram a Zorá e a Estaol, seus irmãos lhes perguntaram: “O que descobriram?”

And they come in unto their brethren, at Zorah and Eshtaol, and their brethren say to them, `What -- ye?'

9 E les responderam: “Vamos atacá-los! Vimos que a terra é muito boa. Vocês vão ficar aí sem fazer nada? Não hesitem em ir apossar-se dela.

And they say, `Rise, and we go up against them, for we have seen the land, and lo, very good; and ye are keeping silent! be not slothful to go -- to enter to possess the land.

10 C hegando lá, vocês encontrarão um povo despreocupado e uma terra espaçosa que Deus pôs nas mãos de vocês, terra onde não falta coisa alguma!”

When ye go, ye come in unto a people confident, and the land large on both hands, for God hath given it into your hand, a place where there is no lack of anything which in the land.'

11 E ntão seiscentos homens da tribo de Dã partiram de Zorá e de Estaol, armados para a guerra.

And there journey thence, of the family of the Danite, from Zorah, and from Eshtaol, six hundred men girded with weapons of war.

12 N a viagem armaram acampamento perto de Quiriate-Jearim, em Judá. É por isso que até hoje o local, a oeste de Quiriate-Jearim, é chamado Maané-Dã.

And they go up and encamp in Kirjath-Jearim, in Judah, therefore they have called that place, `Camp of Dan,' till this day; lo, behind Kirjath-Jearim.

13 D ali foram para os montes de Efraim e chegaram à casa de Mica.

And they pass over thence the hill-country of Ephraim, and come in unto the house of Micah.

14 O s cinco homens que haviam espionado a terra de Laís disseram a seus irmãos: “Vocês sabiam que numa dessas casas há um manto sacerdotal, ídolos da família, uma imagem esculpida e um ídolo de metal? Agora vocês sabem o que devem fazer”.

And the five men, those going to traverse the land of Laish, answer and say unto their brethren, `Have ye known that there is in these houses an ephod, and teraphim, and graven image, and molten image? and now, know what ye do.'

15 E ntão eles se aproximaram e foram à casa do jovem levita, à casa de Mica, e o saudaram.

And they turn aside thither, and come in unto the house of the young man the Levite, the house of Micah, and ask of him of welfare, --

16 O s seiscentos homens de Dã, armados para a guerra, ficaram junto à porta.

(and the six hundred men girded with their weapons of war, who of the sons of Dan, are standing at the opening of the gate), --

17 O s cinco homens que haviam espionado a terra entraram e apanharam a imagem, o manto sacerdotal, os ídolos da família e o ídolo de metal, enquanto o sacerdote e os seiscentos homens armados permaneciam à porta.

yea, the five men, those going to traverse the land, go up -- they have come in thither -- they have taken the graven image, and the ephod, and the teraphim, and the molten image -- and the priest is standing at the opening of the gate, and the six hundred men who are girded with weapons of war --

18 Q uando os homens entraram na casa de Mica e apanharam a imagem, o manto sacerdotal, os ídolos da família e o ídolo de metal, o sacerdote lhes perguntou: “Que é que vocês estão fazendo?”

yea, these have entered the house of Micah, and take the graven image, the ephod, and the teraphim, and the molten image; and the priest saith unto them, `What are ye doing?'

19 E les lhe responderam: “Silêncio! Não diga nada. Venha conosco, e seja nosso pai e sacerdote. Não será melhor para você servir como sacerdote uma tribo e um clã de Israel do que apenas a família de um só homem?”

and they say to him, `Keep silent, lay thy hand on thy mouth, and go with us, and be to us for a father and for a priest: is it better thy being a priest to the house of one man, or thy being priest to a tribe and to a family in Israel?'

20 E ntão o sacerdote se alegrou, apanhou o manto sacerdotal, os ídolos da família e a imagem esculpida e se juntou à tropa.

And the heart of the priest is glad, and he taketh the ephod, and the teraphim, and the graven image, and goeth into the midst of the people,

21 P ondo os seus filhos, os seus animais e os seus bens na frente deles, partiram de volta.

and they turn and go, and put the infants, and the cattle, and the baggage, before them.

22 Q uando já estavam a certa distância da casa, os homens que moravam perto de Mica foram convocados e alcançaram os homens de Dã.

They have been far off from the house of Micah -- and the men who in the houses which near the house of Micah have been called together, and overtake the sons of Dan,

23 C omo vinham gritando atrás deles, estes se voltaram e perguntaram a Mica: “Qual é o seu problema? Por que convocou os seus homens para lutar?”

and call unto the sons of Dan, and they turn round their faces, and say to Micah, `What -- to thee that thou hast been called together?'

24 E le respondeu: “Vocês estão levando embora os deuses que fiz e o meu sacerdote. O que me sobrou? Como é que ainda podem perguntar: ‘Qual é o seu problema?’”

And he saith, `My gods which I made ye have taken, and the priest, and ye go; and what to me more? and what this ye say unto me, What -- to thee!'

25 O s homens de Dã responderam: “Não discuta conosco, senão alguns homens de temperamento violento o atacarão, e você e a sua família perderão a vida”.

And the sons of Dan say unto him, `Let not thy voice be heard with us, lest men bitter in soul fall upon you, and thou hast gathered thy life, and the life of thy household;'

26 E assim os homens de Dã seguiram seu caminho. Vendo que eles eram fortes demais para ele, Mica virou-se e voltou para casa.

and the sons of Dan go on their way, and Micah seeth that they are stronger than he, and turneth, and goeth back unto his house.

27 O s homens de Dã levaram o que Mica fizera e o seu sacerdote, e foram para Laís, lugar de um povo pacífico e despreocupado. Eles mataram todos ao fio da espada e queimaram a cidade.

And they have taken that which Micah had made, and the priest whom he had, and come in against Laish, against a people quiet and confident, and smite them by the mouth of the sword, and the city have burnt with fire,

28 N ão houve quem os livrasse, pois viviam longe de Sidom e não tinham relações com nenhum outro povo. A cidade ficava num vale que se estende até Bete-Reobe. Os homens de Dã reconstruíram a cidade e se estabeleceram nela.

and there is no deliverer, for it far off from Zidon, and they have no word with man, and it in the valley which by Beth-Rehob; and they build the city, and dwell in it,

29 D eram à cidade anteriormente chamada Laís o nome de Dã, em homenagem a seu antepassado Dã, filho de Israel.

and call the name of the city Dan, by the name of Dan their father, who was born to Israel; and yet Laish the name of the city at the first.

30 E les levantaram para si o ídolo, e Jônatas, filho de Gérson, neto de Moisés, e os seus filhos foram sacerdotes da tribo de Dã até que o povo foi para o exílio.

And the sons of Dan raise up for themselves the graven image, and Jonathan son of Gershom, son of Manasseh, he and his sons have been priests to the tribe of the Danite, till the day of the removal of of the land.

31 F icaram com o ídolo feito por Mica durante todo o tempo em que o santuário de Deus esteve em Siló.

And they appoint for them the graven image of Micah, which he had made, all the days of the house of God being in Shiloh.
