1 “ Irmãos e pais, ouçam agora a minha defesa”.

`Men, brethren, and fathers, hear my defence now unto you;' --

2 Q uando ouviram que lhes falava em aramaico, ficaram em absoluto silêncio. Então Paulo disse:

and they having heard that in the Hebrew dialect he was speaking to them, gave the more silence, and he saith, --

3 “ Sou judeu, nascido em Tarso da Cilícia, mas criado nesta cidade. Fui instruído rigorosamente por Gamaliel na lei de nossos antepassados, sendo tão zeloso por Deus quanto qualquer de vocês hoje.

`I, indeed, am a man, a Jew, having been born in Tarsus of Cilicia, and brought up in this city at the feet of Gamaliel, having been taught according to the exactitude of a law of the fathers, being zealous of God, as all ye are to-day.

4 P ersegui os seguidores deste Caminho até a morte, prendendo tanto homens como mulheres e lançando-os na prisão,

`And this way I persecuted unto death, binding and delivering up to prisons both men and women,

5 c omo o podem testemunhar o sumo sacerdote e todo o Sinédrio; deles cheguei a obter cartas para seus irmãos em Damasco e fui até lá, a fim de trazer essas pessoas a Jerusalém como prisioneiras, para serem punidas.

as also the chief priest doth testify to me, and all the eldership; from whom also having received letters unto the brethren, to Damascus, I was going on, to bring also those there bound to Jerusalem that they might be punished,

6 “ Por volta do meio-dia, eu me aproximava de Damasco, quando de repente uma forte luz vinda do céu brilhou ao meu redor.

and it came to pass, in my going on and coming nigh to Damascus, about noon, suddenly out of the heaven there shone a great light round about me,

7 C aí por terra e ouvi uma voz que me dizia: ‘Saulo, Saulo, por que você está me perseguindo?’

I fell also to the ground, and I heard a voice saying to me, Saul, Saul, why me dost thou persecute?

8 E ntão perguntei: Quem és tu, Senhor? E ele respondeu: ‘Eu sou Jesus, o Nazareno, a quem você persegue’.

`And I answered, Who art thou, Lord? and he said unto me, I am Jesus the Nazarene whom thou dost persecute --

9 O s que me acompanhavam viram a luz, mas não entenderam a voz daquele que falava comigo.

and they who are with me the light did see, and became afraid, and the voice they heard not of him who is speaking to me --

10 “ Assim perguntei: Que devo fazer, Senhor? Disse o Senhor: ‘Levante-se, entre em Damasco, onde lhe será dito o que você deve fazer’.

and I said, What shall I do, Lord? and the Lord said unto me, Having risen, go on to Damascus, and there it shall be told thee concerning all things that have been appointed for thee to do.

11 O s que estavam comigo me levaram pela mão até Damasco, porque o resplendor da luz me deixara cego.

`And when I did not see from the glory of that light, being led by the hand by those who are with me, I came to Damascus,

12 “ Um homem chamado Ananias, piedoso segundo a lei e muito respeitado por todos os judeus que ali viviam,

and a certain one, Ananias, a pious man according to the law, being testified to by all the Jews dwelling,

13 v eio ver-me e, pondo-se junto a mim, disse: ‘Irmão Saulo, recupere a visão’. Naquele mesmo instante pude vê-lo.

having come unto me and stood by, said to me, Saul, brother, look up; and I the same hour did look up to him;

14 “ Então ele disse: ‘O Deus dos nossos antepassados o escolheu para conhecer a sua vontade, ver o Justo e ouvir as palavras de sua boca.

and he said, The God of our fathers did choose thee beforehand to know His will, and to see the Righteous One, and to hear a voice out of his mouth,

15 V ocê será testemunha dele a todos os homens, daquilo que viu e ouviu.

because thou shalt be his witness unto all men of what thou hast seen and heard;

16 E agora, que está esperando? Levante-se, seja batizado e lave os seus pecados, invocando o nome dele’.

and now, why tarriest thou? having risen, baptize thyself, and wash away thy sins, calling upon the name of the Lord.

17 “ Quando voltei a Jerusalém, estando eu a orar no templo, caí em êxtase e

`And it came to pass when I returned to Jerusalem, and while I was praying in the temple, I came into a trance,

18 v i o Senhor que me dizia: ‘Depressa! Saia de Jerusalém imediatamente, pois não aceitarão seu testemunho a meu respeito’.

and I saw him saying to me, Haste and go forth in haste out of Jerusalem, because they will not receive thy testimony concerning me;

19 “ Eu respondi: Senhor, estes homens sabem que eu ia de uma sinagoga a outra, a fim de prender e açoitar os que crêem em ti.

and I said, Lord, they -- they know that I was imprisoning and was scourging in every synagogue those believing on thee;

20 E quando foi derramado o sangue de tua testemunha Estêvão, eu estava lá, dando minha aprovação e cuidando das roupas dos que o matavam.

and when the blood of thy witness Stephen was being poured forth, I also was standing by and assenting to his death, and keeping the garments of those putting him to death;

21 “ Então o Senhor me disse: ‘Vá, eu o enviarei para longe, aos gentios’”. Paulo, Cidadão Romano

and he said unto me, Go, because to nations far off I will send thee.'

22 A multidão ouvia Paulo até que ele disse isso. Então todos levantaram a voz e gritaram: “Tira esse homem da face da terra! Ele não merece viver!”

And they were hearing him unto this word, and they lifted up their voice, saying, `Away from the earth with such an one; for it is not fit for him to live.'

23 E stando eles gritando, tirando suas capas e lançando poeira para o ar,

And they crying out and casting up their garments, and throwing dust into the air,

24 o comandante ordenou que Paulo fosse levado à fortaleza e fosse açoitado e interrogado, para saber por que o povo gritava daquela forma contra ele.

the chief captain commanded him to be brought into the castle, saying, `By scourges let him be examined;' that he might know for what cause they were crying so against him.

25 E nquanto o amarravam a fim de açoitá-lo, Paulo disse ao centurião que ali estava: “Vocês têm o direito de açoitar um cidadão romano sem que ele tenha sido condenado?”

And as he was stretching him with the thongs, Paul said unto the centurion who was standing by, `A man, a Roman, uncondemned -- is it lawful to you to scourge;'

26 A o ouvir isso, o centurião foi prevenir o comandante: “Que vais fazer? Este homem é cidadão romano”.

and the centurion having heard, having gone near to the chief captain, told, saying, `Take heed what thou art about to do, for this man is a Roman;'

27 O comandante dirigiu-se a Paulo e perguntou: “Diga-me, você é cidadão romano?” Ele respondeu: “Sim, sou”.

and the chief captain having come near, said to him, `Tell me, art thou a Roman?' and he said, `Yes;'

28 E ntão o comandante disse: “Eu precisei pagar um elevado preço por minha cidadania”. Respondeu Paulo: “Eu a tenho por direito de nascimento”.

and the chief captain answered, `I, with a great sum, did obtain this citizenship;' but Paul said, `But I have been even born.'

29 O s que iam interrogá-lo retiraram-se imediatamente. O próprio comandante ficou alarmado, ao saber que havia prendido um cidadão romano. Paulo Diante do Sinédrio

Immediately, therefore, they departed from him who are about to examine him, and the chief captain also was afraid, having learned that he is a Roman, and because he had bound him,

30 N o dia seguinte, visto que o comandante queria descobrir exatamente por que Paulo estava sendo acusado pelos judeus, libertou-o e ordenou que se reunissem os chefes dos sacerdotes e todo o Sinédrio. Então, trazendo Paulo, apresentou-o a eles.

and on the morrow, intending to know the certainty wherefore he is accused by the Jews, he did loose him from the bonds, and commanded the chief priests and all their sanhedrim to come, and having brought down Paul, he set before them.
