1 E ntão o sumo sacerdote perguntou a Estêvão: “São verdadeiras estas acusações?”

And the chief priest said, `Are then these things so?'

2 A isso ele respondeu: “Irmãos e pais, ouçam-me! O Deus glorioso apareceu a Abraão, nosso pai, estando ele ainda na Mesopotâmia, antes de morar em Harã, e lhe disse:

and he said, `Men, brethren, and fathers, hearken: The God of the glory did appear to our father Abraham, being in Mesopotamia, before his dwelling in Haran,

3 ‘ Saia da sua terra e do meio dos seus parentes e vá para a terra que eu lhe mostrarei’.

and He said to him, Go forth out of thy land, and out of thy kindred, and come to a land that I shall shew thee.

4 “ Então ele saiu da terra dos caldeus e se estabeleceu em Harã. Depois da morte de seu pai, Deus o trouxe a esta terra, onde vocês agora vivem.

`Then having come forth out of the land of the Chaldeans, he dwelt in Haran, and from thence, after the death of his father, He did remove him to this land wherein ye now dwell,

5 D eus não lhe deu nenhuma herança aqui, nem mesmo o espaço de um pé. Mas lhe prometeu que ele e, depois dele, seus descendentes, possuiriam a terra, embora, naquele tempo, Abraão não tivesse filhos.

and He gave him no inheritance in it, not even a footstep, and did promise to give it to him for a possession, and to his seed after him -- he having no child.

6 D eus lhe falou desta forma: ‘Seus descendentes serão peregrinos numa terra estrangeira, e serão escravizados e maltratados por quatrocentos anos.

`And God spake thus, That his seed shall be sojourning in a strange land, and they shall cause it to serve, and shall do it evil four hundred years,

7 M as eu castigarei a nação a quem servirão como escravos, e depois sairão dali e me adorarão neste lugar’.

and the nation whom they shall serve I will judge, said God; and after these things they shall come forth and shall do Me service in this place.

8 E deu a Abraão a aliança da circuncisão. Por isso, Abraão gerou Isaque e o circuncidou oito dias depois do seu nascimento. Mais tarde, Isaque gerou Jacó, e este os doze patriarcas.

`And He gave to him a covenant of circumcision, and so he begat Isaac, and did circumcise him on the eighth day, and Isaac Jacob, and Jacob -- the twelve patriarchs;

9 “ Os patriarcas, tendo inveja de José, venderam-no como escravo para o Egito. Mas Deus estava com ele

and the patriarchs, having been moved with jealousy, sold Joseph to Egypt, and God was with him,

10 e o libertou de todas as suas tribulações, dando a José favor e sabedoria diante do faraó, rei do Egito; este o tornou governador do Egito e de todo o seu palácio.

and did deliver him out of all his tribulations, and gave him favour and wisdom before Pharaoh king of Egypt, and he did set him -- governor over Egypt and all his house.

11 “ Depois houve fome em todo o Egito e em Canaã, trazendo grande sofrimento, e os nossos antepassados não encontravam alimento.

`And there came a dearth upon all the land of Egypt and Canaan, and great tribulation, and our fathers were not finding sustenance,

12 O uvindo que havia trigo no Egito, Jacó enviou nossos antepassados em sua primeira viagem.

and Jacob having heard that there was corn in Egypt, sent forth our fathers a first time;

13 N a segunda viagem deles, José fez-se reconhecer por seus irmãos, e o faraó pôde conhecer a família de José.

and at the second time was Joseph made known to his brethren, and Joseph's kindred became manifest to Pharaoh,

14 D epois disso, José mandou buscar seu pai Jacó e toda a sua família, que eram setenta e cinco pessoas.

and Joseph having sent, did call for his father Jacob, and all his kindred -- with seventy and five souls --

15 E ntão Jacó desceu ao Egito, onde faleceram ele e os nossos antepassados.

and Jacob went down to Egypt, and died, himself and our fathers,

16 S eus corpos foram levados de volta a Siquém e colocados no túmulo que Abraão havia comprado ali dos filhos de Hamor, por certa quantia.

and they were carried over into Sychem, and were laid in the tomb that Abraham bought for a price in money from the sons of Emmor, of Sychem.

17 “ Ao se aproximar o tempo em que Deus cumpriria sua promessa a Abraão, aumentou muito o número do nosso povo no Egito.

`And according as the time of the promise was drawing nigh, which God did swear to Abraham, the people increased and multiplied in Egypt,

18 E ntão outro rei, que nada sabia a respeito de José, passou a governar o Egito.

till another king rose, who had not known Joseph;

19 E le agiu traiçoeiramente para com o nosso povo e oprimiu os nossos antepassados, obrigando-os a abandonar os seus recém-nascidos, para que não sobrevivessem.

this one, having dealt subtilely with our kindred, did evil to our fathers, causing to expose their babes, that they might not live;

20 “ Naquele tempo nasceu Moisés, que era um menino extraordinário. Por três meses ele foi criado na casa de seu pai.

in which time Moses was born, and he was fair to God, and he was brought up three months in the house of his father;

21 Q uando foi abandonado, a filha do faraó o tomou e o criou como seu próprio filho.

and he having been exposed, the daughter of Pharaoh took him up, and did rear him to herself for a son;

22 M oisés foi educado em toda a sabedoria dos egípcios e veio a ser poderoso em palavras e obras.

and Moses was taught in all wisdom of the Egyptians, and he was powerful in words and in works.

23 “ Ao completar quarenta anos, Moisés decidiu visitar seus irmãos israelitas.

`And when forty years were fulfilled to him, it came upon his heart to look after his brethren, the sons of Israel;

24 A o ver um deles sendo maltratado por um egípcio, saiu em defesa do oprimido e o vingou, matando o egípcio.

and having seen a certain one suffering injustice, he did defend, and did justice to the oppressed, having smitten the Egyptian;

25 E le pensava que seus irmãos compreenderiam que Deus o estava usando para salvá-los, mas eles não o compreenderam.

and he was supposing his brethren to understand that God through his hand doth give salvation; and they did not understand.

26 N o dia seguinte, Moisés dirigiu-se a dois israelitas que estavam brigando, e tentou reconciliá-los, dizendo: ‘Homens, vocês são irmãos; por que ferem um ao outro?’

`On the succeeding day, also, he shewed himself to them as they are striving, and urged them to peace, saying, Men, brethren are ye, wherefore do ye injustice to one another?

27 “ Mas o homem que maltratava o outro empurrou Moisés e disse: ‘Quem o nomeou líder e juiz sobre nós?

and he who is doing injustice to the neighbour, did thrust him away, saying, Who set thee a ruler and a judge over us?

28 Q uer matar-me como matou o egípcio ontem?’

to kill me dost thou wish, as thou didst kill yesterday the Egyptian?

29 O uvindo isso, Moisés fugiu para Midiã, onde ficou morando como estrangeiro e teve dois filhos.

`And Moses fled at this word, and became a sojourner in the land of Midian, where he begat two sons,

30 “ Passados quarenta anos, apareceu a Moisés um anjo nas labaredas de uma sarça em chamas no deserto, perto do monte Sinai.

and forty years having been fulfilled, there appeared to him in the wilderness of mount Sinai a messenger of the Lord, in a flame of fire of a bush,

31 V endo aquilo, ficou atônito. E, aproximando-se para observar, ouviu a voz do Senhor:

and Moses having seen did wonder at the sight; and he drawing near to behold, there came a voice of the Lord unto him,

32 ‘ Eu sou o Deus dos seus antepassados, o Deus de Abraão, o Deus de Isaque e o Deus de Jacó’. Moisés, tremendo de medo, não ousava olhar.

I the God of thy fathers; the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. `And Moses having become terrified, durst not behold,

33 “ Então o Senhor lhe disse: ‘Tire as sandálias dos pés, porque o lugar em que você está é terra santa.

and the Lord said to him, Loose the sandal of thy feet, for the place in which thou hast stood is holy ground;

34 D e fato tenho visto a opressão sobre o meu povo no Egito. Ouvi seus gemidos e desci para livrá-lo. Venha agora, e eu o enviarei de volta ao Egito’.

seeing I have seen the affliction of My people that in Egypt, and their groaning I did hear, and came down to deliver them; and now come, I will send thee to Egypt.

35 “ Este é o mesmo Moisés que tinham rejeitado com estas palavras: ‘Quem o nomeou líder e juiz?’ Ele foi enviado pelo próprio Deus para ser líder e libertador deles, por meio do anjo que lhe tinha aparecido na sarça.

`This Moses, whom they did refuse, saying, Who did set thee a ruler and a judge? this one God a ruler and a redeemer did send, in the hand of a messenger who appeared to him in the bush;

36 E le os tirou de lá, fazendo maravilhas e sinais no Egito, no mar Vermelho e no deserto durante quarenta anos.

this one did bring them forth, having done wonders and signs in the land of Egypt, and in the Red Sea, and in the wilderness forty years;

37 “ Este é aquele Moisés que disse aos israelitas: ‘Deus lhes levantará dentre seus irmãos um profeta como eu’.

this is the Moses who did say to the sons of Israel: A prophet to you shall the Lord your God raise up out of your brethren, like to me, him shall ye hear.

38 E le estava na congregação, no deserto, com o anjo que lhe falava no monte Sinai e com os nossos antepassados, e recebeu palavras vivas, para transmiti-las a nós.

`This is he who was in the assembly in the wilderness, with the messenger who is speaking to him in the mount Sinai, and with our fathers who did receive the living oracles to give to us;

39 “ Mas nossos antepassados se recusaram a obedecer-lhe; ao contrário, rejeitaram-no, e em seu coração voltaram para o Egito.

to whom our fathers did not wish to become obedient, but did thrust away, and turned back in their hearts to Egypt,

40 D isseram a Arão: ‘Faça para nós deuses que nos conduzam, pois a esse Moisés que nos tirou do Egito, não sabemos o que lhe aconteceu!’

saying to Aaron, Make to us gods who shall go on before us, for this Moses, who brought us forth out of the land of Egypt, we have not known what hath happened to him.

41 N aquela ocasião fizeram um ídolo em forma de bezerro. Trouxeram-lhe sacrifícios e fizeram uma celebração em honra ao que suas mãos tinham feito.

`And they made a calf in those days, and brought a sacrifice to the idol, and were rejoicing in the works of their hands,

42 M as Deus afastou-se deles e os entregou à adoração dos astros, conforme o que foi escrito no livro dos profetas: “‘Foi a mim que vocês apresentaram sacrifícios e ofertas durante os quarenta anos no deserto, ó nação de Israel?

and God did turn, and did give them up to do service to the host of the heaven, according as it hath been written in the scroll of the prophets: Slain beasts and sacrifices did ye offer to Me forty years in the wilderness, O house of Israel?

43 A o invés disso, levantaram o santuário de Moloque e a estrela do seu deus Renfã, ídolos que vocês fizeram para adorar! Portanto, eu os enviarei para o exílio, para além da Babilônia’.

and ye took up the tabernacle of Moloch, and the star of your god Remphan -- the figures that ye made to bow before them, and I will remove your dwelling beyond Babylon.

44 “ No deserto os nossos antepassados tinham o tabernáculo da aliança, que fora feito segundo a ordem de Deus a Moisés, de acordo com o modelo que ele tinha visto.

`The tabernacle of the testimony was among our fathers in the wilderness, according as He did direct, who is speaking to Moses, to make it according to the figure that he had seen;

45 T endo recebido o tabernáculo, nossos antepassados o levaram, sob a liderança de Josué, quando tomaram a terra das nações que Deus expulsou de diante deles. Esse tabernáculo permaneceu nesta terra até a época de Davi,

which also our fathers having in succession received, did bring in with Joshua, into the possession of the nations whom God did drive out from the presence of our fathers, till the days of David,

46 q ue encontrou graça diante de Deus e pediu que ele lhe permitisse providenciar uma habitação para o Deus de Jacó.

who found favour before God, and requested to find a tabernacle for the God of Jacob;

47 M as foi Salomão quem lhe construiu a casa.

and Solomon built Him an house.

48 “ Todavia, o Altíssimo não habita em casas feitas por homens. Como diz o profeta:

`But the Most High in sanctuaries made with hands doth not dwell, according as the prophet saith:

49 “ ‘O céu é o meu trono, e a terra, o estrado dos meus pés. Que espécie de casa vocês me edificarão? diz o Senhor, ou, onde seria meu lugar de descanso?

The heaven My throne, and the earth My footstool; what house will ye build to Me? saith the Lord, or what the place of My rest?

50 N ão foram as minhas mãos que fizeram todas estas coisas?’

hath not My hand made all these things?

51 “ Povo rebelde, obstinado de coração e de ouvidos! Vocês são iguais aos seus antepassados: sempre resistem ao Espírito Santo!

`Ye stiff-necked and uncircumcised in heart and in ears! ye do always the Holy Spirit resist; as your fathers -- also ye;

52 Q ual dos profetas os seus antepassados não perseguiram? Eles mataram aqueles que prediziam a vinda do Justo, de quem agora vocês se tornaram traidores e assassinos —

which of the prophets did not your fathers persecute? and they killed those who declared before about the coming of the Righteous One, of whom now ye betrayers and murderers have become,

53 v ocês, que receberam a Lei por intermédio de anjos, mas não lhe obedeceram”. O Apedrejamento de Estêvão

who received the law by arrangement of messengers, and did not keep.'

54 O uvindo isso, ficaram furiosos e rangeram os dentes contra ele.

And hearing these things, they were cut to the hearts, and did gnash the teeth at him;

55 M as Estêvão, cheio do Espírito Santo, levantou os olhos para o céu e viu a glória de Deus, e Jesus em pé, à direita de Deus,

and being full of the Holy Spirit, having looked stedfastly to the heaven, he saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God,

56 e disse: “Vejo os céus abertos e o Filho do homem em pé, à direita de Deus”.

and he said, `Lo, I see the heavens having been opened, and the Son of Man standing on the right hand of God.'

57 M as eles taparam os ouvidos e, dando fortes gritos, lançaram-se todos juntos contra ele,

And they, having cried out with a loud voice, stopped their ears, and did rush with one accord upon him,

58 a rrastaram-no para fora da cidade e começaram a apedrejá-lo. As testemunhas deixaram seus mantos aos pés de um jovem chamado Saulo.

and having cast him forth outside of the city, they were stoning -- and the witnesses did put down their garments at the feet of a young man called Saul --

59 E nquanto apedrejavam Estêvão, este orava: “Senhor Jesus, recebe o meu espírito”.

and they were stoning Stephen, calling and saying, `Lord Jesus, receive my spirit;'

60 E ntão caiu de joelhos e bradou: “Senhor, não os consideres culpados deste pecado”. E, tendo dito isso, adormeceu.

and having bowed the knees, he cried with a loud voice, `Lord, mayest thou not lay to them this sin;' and this having said, he fell asleep.
