1 E fraimiţii s-au strâns laolaltă, au trecut în Ţafon şi i-au zis lui Iefta: – De ce te-ai dus să lupţi împotriva amoniţilor şi nu ne-ai chemat şi pe noi ca să mergem cu tine? Pentru asta vom da foc casei tale şi te vom arde şi pe tine!

And the men of Ephraim are called together, and pass over northward, and say to Jephthah, `Wherefore has thou passed over to fight against the Bene-Ammon, and on us hast not called to go with thee? thy house we burn over thee with fire.'

2 I efta le-a răspuns: – Eu şi poporul meu am avut o mare ceartă cu amoniţii şi când v-am chemat nu mi-aţi venit în ajutor.

And Jephthah saith unto them, `A man of great strife I have been (I and my people) with the Bene-Ammon, and I call you, and ye have not saved me out of their hand,

3 C ând am văzut că nu mă ajutaţi, mi-am pus viaţa în joc şi am pornit împotriva amoniţilor, iar Domnul i-a dat în mâna mea. De ce veniţi astăzi să vă luptaţi cu mine?

and I see that thou art not a saviour, and I put my life in my hand, and pass over unto the Bene-Ammon, and Jehovah giveth them into my hand -- and why have ye come up unto me this day to fight against me?'

4 I efta i-a strâns pe toţi ghiladiţii şi s-a luptat cu cei din Efraim. Ghiladiţii i-au ucis pe efraimiţi pentru că aceştia îi batjocoreau zicând: „Voi, ghiladiţii, sunteţi nişte fugari ai lui Efraim; Ghiladul aparţine lui Efraim şi lui Manase!“

And Jephthah gathered all the men of Gilead, and fighteth with Ephraim, and the men of Gilead smite Ephraim, because they said, `Fugitives of Ephraim ye Gileadites, in the midst of Ephraim -- in the midst of Manasseh.'

5 G hiladiţii au cucerit şi vadurile Iordanului dinspre Efraim, astfel că, atunci când vreunul din fugarii efraimiţi voia să treacă, ghiladiţii îl întrebau dacă este efraimit. Dacă nega,

And Gilead captureth the passages of the Jordan to Ephraim, and it hath been, when the fugitives of Ephraim say, `Let me pass over,' and the men of Gilead say to him, `An Ephramite thou?' and he saith, `No;'

6 î l puneau să zică „Şibolet“; el însă nu putea rosti decât „Sibolet“. Atunci ei îl înşfăcau şi îl omorau la vadurile Iordanului. Aşa au pierit în vremea aceea patruzeci şi două de mii de efraimiţi.

that they say to him, `Say, I pray thee, Shibboleth;' and he saith, `Sibboleth,' and is not prepared to speak right -- and they seize him, and slaughter him at the passages of the Jordan, and there fall at that time, of Ephraim, forty and two chiefs.

7 I efta a judecat Israelul timp de şase ani. Apoi ghiladitul Iefta a murit şi a fost îngropat într-una din cetăţile Ghiladului. Ibţan, Elon şi Abdon

And Jephthah judged Israel six years, and Jephthah the Gileadite dieth, and is buried in the cities of Gilead.

8 C el ce a judecat Israelul după el a fost Ibţan din Betleem.

And after him Ibzan of Beth-Lehem judgeth Israel,

9 E l a avut treizeci de fii şi treizeci de fete. Fetele le-a măritat în afara clanului, iar fiii i-a căsătorit cu treizeci de femei din afara clanului. El a judecat pe Israel timp de şapte ani.

and he hath thirty sons and thirty daughters, he hath sent without and thirty daughters hath brought in to his sons from without; and he judgeth Israel seven years.

10 I bţan a murit şi a fost îngropat la Betleem.

And Ibzan dieth, and is buried in Beth-Lehem.

11 D upă el, cel ce a judecat Israelul a fost zabulonitul Elon. El a judecat Israelul timp de zece ani.

And after him Elon the Zebulunite judgeth Israel, and he judgeth Israel ten years,

12 Z abulonitul Elon a murit şi a fost îngropat în Aialon, pe teritoriul lui Zabulon.

and Elon the Zebulunite dieth, and is buried in Aijalon, in the land of Zebulun.

13 D upă el, cel ce a judecat Israelul a fost Abdon, fiul piratonitului Hilel.

And after him, Abdon son of Hillel, the Pirathonite, judgeth Israel,

14 A cesta avea patruzeci de fii şi treizeci de nepoţi care călăreau pe şaptezeci de măgari. El a judecat Israelul timp de opt ani.

and he hath forty sons, and thirty grandsons, riding on seventy ass-colts, and he judgeth Israel eight years.

15 A poi Abdon, fiul piratonitului Hilel, a murit şi a fost îngropat la Piraton, pe teritoriul lui Efraim, în regiunea muntoasă a amalekiţilor.

And Abdon son of Hillel, the Pirathonite, dieth, and is buried in Pirathon, in the land of Ephraim, in the hill-country of the Amalekite.
