1 I etro, preotul din Midian, socrul lui Moise, a aflat tot ce făcuse Dumnezeu pentru Moise şi pentru poporul Său, Israel; a aflat cum l-a scos Domnul pe Israel din Egipt.

And Jethro priest of Midian, father-in-law of Moses, heareth all that God hath done for Moses, and for Israel his people, that Jehovah hath brought out Israel from Egypt,

2 I etro a adus-o înapoi pe Sefora, soţia lui Moise, care fusese trimisă acasă.

and Jethro, father-in-law of Moses, taketh Zipporah, wife of Moses, besides her parents,

3 I -a adus şi pe cei doi fii ai Seforei. Unul se numea Gherşom (căci Moise zisese: „Locuiesc ca străin într-o ţară străină“),

and her two sons, of whom the name of the one Gershom, for he said, `a sojourner I have been in a strange land:'

4 i ar celălalt se numea Eliezer (căci Moise zisese: „Dumnezeul tatălui meu a fost ajutorul meu şi m-a scăpat de sabia lui Faraon“).

and the name of the other Eliezer, for, `the God of my father for my help, and doth deliver me from the sword of Pharaoh.'

5 I etro, socrul lui Moise, a venit în pustia unde aşezase Moise tabăra, lângă muntele lui Dumnezeu, aducându-i cu el pe fiii lui Moise şi pe soţia acestuia.

And Jethro, father-in-law of Moses, cometh, and his sons, and his wife, unto Moses, unto the wilderness where he is encamping -- the mount of God;

6 I etro i-a trimis vorbă lui Moise, zicându-i: „Eu, socrul tău, Ietro, vin la tine cu soţia şi cu fiii ei.“

and he saith unto Moses, `I, thy father-in-law, Jethro, am coming unto thee, and thy wife, and her two sons with her.'

7 M oise a ieşit să-l întâlnească pe socrul său; s-a plecat înaintea lui şi l-a sărutat. S-au întrebat unul pe celălalt de sănătate şi împreună au intrat în cort.

And Moses goeth out to meet his father-in-law, and boweth himself, and kisseth him, and they ask one at another of welfare, and come into the tent;

8 A poi Moise i-a istorisit socrului său tot ceea ce le-a făcut Domnul lui Faraon şi egiptenilor de dragul lui Israel, toate greutăţile care veniseră peste ei pe drum şi cum i-a eliberat Domnul.

and Moses recounteth to his father-in-law all that Jehovah hath done to Pharaoh, and to the Egyptians, on account of Israel, all the travail which hath found them in the way, and Jehovah doth deliver them.

9 I etro s-a bucurat pentru tot binele pe care Domnul îl făcuse lui Israel, scăpându-l din mâna egiptenilor.

And Jethro rejoiceth for all the good which Jehovah hath done to Israel, whom He hath delivered from the hand of the Egyptians;

10 I etro a zis: „Binecuvântat să fie Domnul Care v-a scăpat din mâna egiptenilor şi a lui Faraon.

and Jethro saith, `Blessed Jehovah, who hath delivered you from the hand of the Egyptians, and from the hand of Pharaoh -- who hath delivered this people from under the hand of the Egyptians;

11 A cum ştiu că Domnul este mai mare decât toţi zeii, căci în fiecare lucru în care ei s-au purtat cu trufie faţă de Israel, El a fost mai presus de ei.“

now I have known that Jehovah greater than all the gods, for in the thing they have acted proudly -- above them!'

12 I etro, socrul lui Moise, a adus o ardere de tot şi jertfe lui Dumnezeu. Aaron a venit împreună cu toţi cei din sfatul bătrânilor lui Israel, ca să ia masa împreună cu socrul lui Moise, înaintea lui Dumnezeu.

And Jethro, father-in-law of Moses, taketh a burnt-offering and sacrifices for God; and Aaron cometh in, and all the elders of Israel, to eat bread with the father-in-law of Moses, before God.

13 Î n ziua următoare, Moise s-a aşezat ca să judece poporul şi poporul a stat în jurul lui de dimineaţa până seara.

And it cometh to pass on the morrow, that Moses sitteth to judge the people, and the people stand before Moses, from the morning unto the evening;

14 C ând socrul lui Moise a văzut tot ce făcea el pentru popor, l-a întrebat: – Ce faci tu acolo pentru popor? De ce stai singur şi tot poporul stă în jurul tău de dimineaţa până seara?

and the father-in-law of Moses seeth all that he is doing to the people, and saith, `What this thing which thou art doing to the people? wherefore art thou sitting by thyself, and all the people standing by thee from morning till evening?'

15 M oise i-a răspuns socrului său: – Pentru că poporul vine la mine să ceară sfatul lui Dumnezeu.

And Moses saith to his father-in-law, `Because the people come unto me to seek God;

16 C ând au vreo problemă, vin la mine ca să-i judec, iar eu le fac cunoscute poruncile şi legile lui Dumnezeu.

when they have a matter, it hath come unto me, and I have judged between a man and his neighbour, and made known the statutes of God, and His laws.'

17 S ocrul lui Moise i-a zis: – Ceea ce faci tu nu este bine.

And the father-in-law of Moses saith unto him, `The thing which thou art doing not good;

18 T e istoveşti singur şi istoveşti şi poporul care este cu tine. Sarcina este prea grea pentru tine, ca să o poţi purta singur.

thou dost surely wear away, both thou, and this people which with thee, for the thing is too heavy for thee, thou art not able to do it by thyself.

19 A scultă-mă: îţi voi da un sfat şi Dumnezeu va fi cu tine! Stai înaintea lui Dumnezeu pentru popor şi adu problemele înaintea Sa;

`Now, hearken to my voice, I counsel thee, and God is with thee: be thou for the people over-against God, and thou hast brought in the things unto God;

20 î nvaţă-i poruncile şi legile şi arată-le calea pe care trebuie să meargă şi lucrurile pe care trebuie să le facă.

and thou hast warned them the statutes and the laws, and hast made known to them the way in which they go, and the work which they do.

21 C aută oameni destoinici în popor, oameni care se tem de Dumnezeu, care sunt vrednici de încredere şi urăsc câştigul necinstit. Pune-i pe aceşti oameni conducători peste o mie, peste o sută, peste cincizeci şi peste zece oameni.

`And thou -- thou dost provide out of all the people men of ability, fearing God, men of truth, hating dishonest gain, and hast placed over them, heads of thousands, heads of hundreds, heads of fifties, and heads of tens,

22 E i să slujească ca judecători ai poporului în orice vreme; să aducă înaintea ta orice caz greu, însă cazurile uşoare să le judece ei înşişi. În felul acesta va fi mai uşor pentru tine şi ei vor duce povara împreună cu tine.

and they have judged the people at all times; and it hath come to pass, every great matter they bring in unto thee, and every small matter they judge themselves; and lighten it from off thyself, and they have borne with thee.

23 D acă vei face lucrul acesta şi dacă Dumnezeu îţi va porunci aşa, vei putea face faţă sarcinilor şi tot poporul va merge la locul lui în pace.

If thou dost this thing, and God hath commanded thee, then thou hast been able to stand, and all this people also goeth in unto its place in peace.'

24 M oise a ascultat de socrul său şi a făcut tot ceea ce acesta i-a zis.

And Moses hearkeneth to the voice of his father-in-law, and doth all that he said,

25 A ales oameni destoinici din tot Israelul şi i-a pus conducători peste popor: conducători peste o mie, peste o sută, peste cincizeci şi peste zece oameni.

and Moses chooseth men of ability out of all Israel, and maketh them chiefs over the people, heads of thousands, heads of hundreds, heads of fifties, and heads of tens,

26 E i judecau poporul tot timpul; cazurile grele i le aduceau lui Moise, iar cele uşoare le judecau ei înşişi.

and they have judged the people at all times; the hard matter they bring in unto Moses, and every small matter they judge themselves.

27 A poi Moise şi-a lăsat socrul să plece în ţara lui.

And Moses sendeth his father-in-law away, and he goeth away unto his own land.
