1 Î n anul al unsprezecelea, în prima zi a lunii a treia, Cuvântul Domnului a venit la mine şi mi-a zis:

And it cometh to pass, in the eleventh year, in the third, in the first of the month, hath a word of Jehovah been unto me, saying:

2 „ Fiul omului, spune-i lui Faraon, monarhul Egiptului, şi mulţimii sale astfel: «Cu cine poţi fi asemănat tu, în măreţia ta?

`Son of man, say unto Pharaoh king of Egypt, and unto his multitude: To whom hast thou been like in thy greatness?

3 I ată că, odinioară, Asiria era un cedru în Liban, cu ramuri frumoase şi coroana aducătoare de umbră; era înalt în statură, iar vârful îi ajungea printre nori.

Lo, Asshur, a cedar in Lebanon, Fair in branch, and shading bough, and high in stature, And between thickets hath its foliage been.

4 A pele îl făcuseră să crească şi adâncul îl înălţase; râurile acestuia scăldau locul în care era plantat de jur împrejur şi îşi trimiteau pâraiele la toţi copacii câmpiei.

Waters have made it great, The deep hath exalted him with its flowings, Going round about its planting, And its conduits it hath sent forth unto all trees of the field.

5 D e aceea s-a înălţat în statură mai mult decât toţi ceilalţi copaci din câmpie. Crengile i-au crescut şi ramurile i s-au lungit, din pricina belşugului de ape care-l făcuse să dea vlăstare.

Therefore higher hath been his stature than all trees of the field, And multiplied are his boughs, and long are his branches, Because of many waters in his shooting forth,

6 P rintre crengile lui îşi făceau cuibul toate păsările cerului; sub coroana lui zămisleau toate fiarele câmpului, iar la umbra lui locuiau toate neamurile cele multe.

In his boughs made a nest hath every fowl of the heavens, And under his branches brought forth hath every beast of the field, And in his shade dwell do all great nations.

7 E ra frumos prin măreţia lui şi prin lungimea ramurilor lui, căci rădăcinile lui erau înfipte în apropierea multor ape.

And he is fair in his greatness, In the length of his thin shoots, For his root hath been by great waters.

8 C edrii din grădina lui Dumnezeu nu-l întreceau, chiparoşii nu se puteau compara cu crengile lui, iar platanii nu se puteau asemăna cu ramurile lui; nici un copac din grădina lui Dumnezeu nu se putea compara cu el în frumuseţe.

Cedars have not hid him in the garden of God, Firs have not been like unto his boughs, And chesnut-trees have not been as his branches, No tree in the garden of God hath been like unto him in his beauty,

9 L -am făcut atât de frumos prin mulţimea crengilor lui, încât îl invidiau toţi copacii Edenului, toţi copacii din grădina lui Dumnezeu.»

Fair I have made him in the multitude of his thin shoots, And envy him do all trees of Eden that in the garden of God.

10 D e aceea, aşa vorbeşte Stăpânul Domn: «Pentru că se înălţa în statură, pentru că îşi ridica vârful până la nori şi inima i se mândrea cu înălţimea lui,

Therefore, thus said the Lord Jehovah: Because that thou hast been high in stature, And he yieldeth his foliage between thickets, And high is his heart in his haughtiness,

11 l -am dat pe mâna prinţului neamurilor, care i-a făcut după răutatea lui. Eu l-am lepădat

I give him into the hand of a god of nations, He dealeth sorely with him, In his wickedness I have cast him out.

12 ş i astfel cele mai înspăimântătoare dintre neamurile străine l-au tăiat şi l-au părăsit. Crengile i-au căzut pe munţi şi prin toate văile, iar ramurile i-au fost spulberate prin toate albiile ţării. Toate popoarele pământului au plecat de la umbra lui şi l-au părăsit.

And cut him off do strangers, The terrible of nations, and they leave him, On the mountains and in all valleys have his thin shoots fallen, And broken are his boughs at all streams of the land, And go down from his shade do all peoples of the land, and they leave him.

13 P e trunchiul lui căzut şi-au făcut cuibul toate păsările cerului, iar între crengile lui s-au aşezat toate fiarele câmpului.

On his ruin dwell do all fowls of the heavens, And on his boughs have been all the beasts of the field,

14 T oate acestea, pentru ca nici unul dintre copacii de lângă ape să nu se mai mândrească cu înălţimea lui şi să nu-şi mai ridice vârful până la nori şi pentru ca nici un copac udat de ape să nu-şi mai înalţe trunchiul spre ei. Căci toţi sunt sortiţi morţii, în tărâmul de jos, printre muritori, la cei ce s-au coborât în groapă.»

In order that none of the trees of the waters May become haughty because of their stature, Nor give their foliage between thickets, Nor any drinking waters stand up unto them in their haughtiness, For all of them are given up to death, Unto the earth -- the lower part, In the midst of the sons of men, Unto those going down to the pit.

15 A şa vorbeşte Stăpânul Domn: «În ziua în care s-a coborât în Locuinţa Morţilor, am răspândit jalea. L-am acoperit cu adâncul şi i-am retras râurile, iar apele cele multe au fost oprite. Am întunecat Libanul pentru el şi toţi copacii câmpiei s-au uscat din pricina lui.

Thus said the Lord Jehovah: In the day of his going down to sheol I have caused mourning, I have covered for him the deep, and diminish its flowings, And restrained are many waters, And I make Lebanon black for him, And all trees of the field have been covered for him.

16 L a vuietul căderii sale am făcut să se cutremure neamurile, când l-am coborât în Locuinţa Morţilor împreună cu cei ce se coboară în groapă. Atunci toţi copacii Edenului, ce avea Libanul mai bun şi mai ales, toţi copaci bine udaţi, s-au consolat în tărâmul de jos.

From the sound of his fall I have caused nations to shake, In My causing him to go down to sheol, With those going down to the pit, And comforted in the earth -- the lower part, are all trees of Eden, The choice and the good of Lebanon, All drinking waters.

17 S -au coborât şi ei împreună cu el în Locuinţa Morţilor, la cei răpuşi de sabie, ei care erau aliaţii lui şi locuiau la umbra lui printre neamuri.

Also they with him have gone down to sheol, Unto the pierced of the sword, And -- his arm -- they dwelt in his shade in the midst of nations.

18 A şadar, Faraon, cu cine poţi fi asemănat tu printre copacii Edenului, în toată slava şi măreţia ta? Şi totuşi vei fi coborât împreună cu copacii Edenului în tărâmul de jos şi vei zăcea printre cei necircumcişi, alături de cei răpuşi de sabie. Iată ce este Faraon şi toată mulţimea lui, zice Stăpânul Domn. »“

Unto whom hast thou been thus like, In honour and in greatness among the trees of Eden, And thou hast been brought down with the trees of Eden, Unto the earth -- the lower part, In the midst of the uncircumcised thou liest, With the pierced of the sword? It Pharaoh, and all his multitude, An affirmation of the Lord Jehovah!'
