1 A hitofel l-a rugat pe Absalom: – Lasă-mă să aleg douăsprezece mii de oameni şi să pornesc degrabă, la noapte, în urmărirea lui David.

And Ahithophel said unto Absalom, `Let me choose, I pray thee, twelve thousand men, and I arise and pursue after David to-night,

2 Î l voi ataca pe neaşteptate, când încă va fi obosit şi slăbit. Voi aduce groaza peste el şi toţi cei ce sunt cu el vor fugi. Atunci îl voi ucide numai pe rege.

and come upon him, and he weary and feeble-handed, and I have caused him to tremble, and all the people have fled who with him, and I have smitten the king by himself,

3 A stfel voi întoarce tot poporul la tine şi moartea omului pe care-l cauţi va însemna întoarcerea celorlalţi; toţi ceilalţi se vor întoarce în pace.

and I bring back all the people unto thee -- as the turning back of the whole the man whom thou art seeking -- all the people are peace.

4 A cest sfat a părut bun atât lui Absalom, cât şi tuturor celor din sfatul bătrânilor lui Israel.

And the thing is right in the eyes of Absalom, and in the eyes of all the elders of Israel.

5 A bsalom însă a zis: – Chemaţi-l şi pe architul Huşai, să auzim şi ce va zice el.

And Absalom saith, `Call, I pray thee, also for Hushai the Archite, and we hear what in his mouth -- even he.'

6 C ând a sosit Huşai, Absalom i-a zis: – Acesta este sfatul lui Ahitofel. Să facem cum a zis el? Dacă nu, sfătuieşte-ne tu.

And Hushai cometh in unto Absalom, and Absalom speaketh unto him, saying, `According to this word hath Ahithophel spoken; do we do his word? if not, thou -- speak thou.'

7 – De data aceasta, a răspuns Huşai, sfatul dat de Ahitofel nu este bun.

And Hushai saith unto Absalom, `Not good the counsel that Ahithophel hath counselled at this time.'

8 T u ştii că tatăl tău şi oamenii lui sunt războinici viteji, iar acum sunt înfuriaţi ca o ursoaică în câmp, căreia i-au fost răpiţi puii. Pe lângă aceasta, tatăl tău, fiind un războinic, nu va petrece noaptea cu poporul.

And Hushai saith, `Thou hast known thy father and his men, that they heroes, and they are bitter in soul as a bereaved bear in a field, and thy father a man of war, and doth not lodge with the people;

9 C hiar acum este ascuns în vreo peşteră sau în vreun alt loc. Dacă una din trupele tale va fi învinsă de la început, atunci oricine va auzi va spune: „Oştirea care este de partea lui Absalom a suferit o înfrângere.“

lo, now, he is hidden in one of the pits, or in one of the places, and it hath been, at the falling among them at the commencement, that the hearer hath heard, and said, There hath been a slaughter among the people who after Absalom;

10 A stfel, chiar şi celor mai viteji războinici, care au o inimă de leu, li se va topi inima de frică, căci tot Israelul ştie că tatăl tău este un viteaz şi că are nişte războinici cu el.

and he also, the son of valour, whose heart as the heart of the lion, doth utterly melt, for all Israel doth know that thy father is a hero, and sons of valour those with him.

11 P rin urmare, iată sfatul meu: adună tot Israelul la tine, de la Dan şi până la Beer-Şeba – o mulţime cât nisipul de pe malul mării – şi condu-i tu însuţi în luptă.

`So that I have counselled: Let all Israel be diligently gathered unto thee, from Dan even unto Beer-Sheba, as the sand that by the sea for multitude, and thou thyself art going in the midst;

12 A poi îl vom ataca acolo unde îl vom găsi, ne vom năpusti asupra lui aşa cum cade roua pe pământ şi nu va fi lăsat în viaţă nici el, nici vreunul dintre oamenii lui.

and we have come in unto him in one of the places where he is found, and we upon him as the dew falleth on the ground, and there hath not been left of him and of all the men who with him even one.

13 D acă se va retrage în vreo cetate, atunci toţi israeliţii vor aduce funii şi vom trage acea cetate spre vale până nu va mai rămâne din ea nici măcar o pietricică.

And if unto a city he is gathered, then they have caused all Israel to bear unto that city ropes, and we have drawn it unto the brook till that there hath not been found there even a stone.'

14 A bsalom şi toţi cei din sfatul bătrânilor lui Israel au zis: „Sfatul architului Huşai este mai bun decât cel al lui Ahitofel.“ Aceasta pentru că Domnul a hotărât să zădărnicească sfatul cel bun al lui Ahitofel ca să aducă nenorocirea asupra lui Absalom.

And Absalom saith -- and all the men of Israel -- `Better the counsel of Hushai the Archite than the counsel of Ahithophel;' and Jehovah willed to make void the good counsel of Ahithophel for the sake of Jehovah's bringing unto Absalom the evil.

15 H uşai le-a zis preoţilor Ţadok şi Abiatar care a fost sfatul dat de Ahitofel lui Absalom şi celor din sfatul bătrânilor lui Israel şi care a fost sfatul pe care l-a dat el însuşi.

And Hushai saith unto Zadok and unto Abiathar the priests, `Thus and thus hath Ahithophel counselled Absalom and the elders of Israel, and thus and thus I have counselled;

16 L e-a mai zis: „Trimiteţi-i imediat un mesaj lui David şi spuneţi-i: «Să nu-ţi petreci noaptea lângă vadurile pustiei, ci să traversezi repede, ca nu cumva regele şi toţi oamenii care sunt cu el să fie ucişi.»“

and now, send hastily, and declare to David, saying, Lodge not to-night in the plains of the wilderness, and also, certainly pass over, lest there be a swallowing up of the king and of all the people who are with him.'

17 I onatan şi Ahimaaţ aşteptau veştile la En-Roghel, deoarece nu îndrăzneau să intre în cetate. O slujnică venea şi le aducea veştile, iar ei se duceau şi îl înştiinţau pe regele David.

And Jonathan and Ahimaaz are standing at En-Rogel, and the maid-servant hath gone and declared to them -- and they go and have declared to king David -- for they are not able to be seen to go in to the city.

18 T otuşi, un tânăr i-a văzut şi i-a spus lui Absalom. Aflând aceasta, cei doi au plecat repede şi au ajuns la casa unui anume om din Bahurim. Acesta avea în curte o fântână şi cei doi au coborât în ea.

And a youth seeth them, and declareth to Absalom; and they go on both of them hastily, and come in unto the house of a man in Bahurim, and he hath a well in his court, and they go down there,

19 S oţia omului a luat o învelitoare pe care a întins-o peste gura fântânii şi a împrăştiat nişte grâne pe ea, pentru ca nimeni să nu poată bănui ceva.

and the woman taketh and spreadeth the covering over the face of the well, and spreadeth on it the ground corn, and the thing hath not been known.

20 S lujitorii lui Absalom au ajuns la casa femeii şi au întrebat-o: – Unde sunt Ahimaaţ şi Ionatan? – Au trecut pârâul! le-a răspuns femeia. Ei au căutat după cei doi, dar, negăsindu-i, s-au întors la Ierusalim.

And the servants of Absalom come in unto the woman to the house, and say, `Where Ahimaaz and Jonathan?' and the woman saith to them, `They passed over the brook of water;' and they seek, and have not found, and turn back to Jerusalem.

21 D upă ce s-au îndepărtat oamenii lui Absalom, cei doi au ieşit din fântână şi s-au dus să-l înştiinţeze pe regele David. Ei i-au zis lui David: „Sculaţi-vă şi traversaţi repede râul, căci iată sfatul pe care l-a dat Ahitofel împotriva voastră.“

And it cometh to pass, after their going on, that they come up out of the well, and go and declare to king David, and say unto David, `Rise ye, and pass over hastily the waters, for thus hath Ahithophel counselled against you.'

22 D avid împreună cu cei ce erau cu el au trecut în grabă Iordanul şi, până în zorii zilei, nu a mai rămas nici unul care să nu fi trecut râul.

And David riseth, and all the people who with him, and they pass over the Jordan, till the light of the morning, till one hath not been lacking who hath not passed over the Jordan.

23 A hitofel, văzând că nu i-a fost urmat sfatul, şi-a înşeuat măgarul şi a plecat în grabă acasă, în cetatea sa. Şi-a pus casa în rânduială şi apoi s-a spânzurat. Astfel el a murit şi a fost înmormântat în mormântul tatălui său. David la Mahanayim

And Ahithophel hath seen that his counsel was not done, and he saddleth the ass, and riseth and goeth unto his house, unto his city, and giveth charge unto his household, and strangleth himself, and dieth, and he is buried in the burying-place of his father.

24 D avid a ajuns la Mahanayim, în timp ce Absalom trecea Iordanul împreună cu toţi israeliţii.

And David came to Mahanaim, and Absalom passed over the Jordan, he and all the men of Israel with him;

25 A bsalom l-a numit pe Amasa drept conducător al oştirii, în locul lui Ioab. Amasa era fiul unui israelit pe nume Ieter, care fusese căsătorit cu Abigail, fiica lui Nahaş şi sora Ţeruiei, mama lui Ioab.

and Amasa hath Absalom set instead of Joab over the host, and Amasa a man's son whose name is Ithra the Israelite who hath gone in unto Abigail, daughter of Nahash, sister of Zeruiah, mother of Joab;

26 I sraeliţii împreună cu Absalom şi-au aşezat tabăra pe teritoriul Ghiladului.

and Israel encampeth with Absalom the land of Gilead.

27 C ând David a ajuns la Mahanayim, Şobi, fiul lui Nahaş, din Raba amoniţilor, Machir, fiul lui Amiel, din Lo-Debar şi ghiladitul Barzilai, din Roghelim,

And it cometh to pass at the coming in of David to Mahanaim, that Shobi, son of Nahash, from Rabbah of the Bene-Ammon, and Machir son of Ammiel, from Lo-Debar, and Barzillai the Gileadite, from Rogelim,

28 a u adus paturi, lighene, vase din lut, grâu, orz, făină, grâne prăjite, fasole şi linte,

couch, and basin, and earthen vessel, and wheat, and barley, and flour, and roasted, and beans, and lentiles, and roasted,

29 m iere, lapte bătut, oi şi brânză de vaci pentru ca David şi cei ce erau cu el să mănânce. Ei îşi ziceau: „Poporul este flămând, ostenit şi însetat în urma călătoriei prin pustie.“

and honey, and butter, and sheep, and cheese of kine, have brought nigh for David, and for the people who with him to eat, for they said, `Thy people hungry, and weary, and thirsty, in the wilderness.'
