1 C uvântul Domnului a venit a doua oară la Iona şi i-a zis:

And there is a word of Jehovah unto Jonah a second time, saying,

2 „ Scoală-te, du-te la Ninive, cetatea cea mare, şi vesteşte acolo mesajul pe care ţi-l spun!“

`Rise, go unto Nineveh, the great city, and proclaim unto it the proclamation that I am speaking unto thee;'

3 I ona s-a sculat şi s-a dus la Ninive, potrivit Cuvântului Domnului. Ninive era o cetate deosebit de mare, fiind nevoie de trei zile pentru a o străbate.

and Jonah riseth, and he goeth unto Nineveh, according to the word of Jehovah. And Nineveh hath been a great city before God, a journey of three days.

4 I ona a început să meargă prin cetate cale de o zi. El striga: „Încă patruzeci de zile şi Ninive va fi distrusă!“

And Jonah beginneth to go in to the city a journey of one day, and proclaimeth, and saith, `Yet forty days -- and Nineveh is overturned.'

5 A tunci oamenii din Ninive au crezut în Dumnezeu, au vestit un post şi s-au îmbrăcat cu saci, de la cel mai mare până la cel mai mic.

And the men of Nineveh believe in God, and proclaim a fast, and put on sackcloth, from their greatest even unto their least,

6 C ând această veste a ajuns la regele din Ninive, acesta s-a ridicat de pe tronul său, şi-a dat jos mantia de pe el, s-a acoperit cu un sac şi s-a aşezat în cenuşă.

seeing the word doth come unto the king of Nineveh, and he riseth from his throne, and removeth his honourable robe from off him, and spreadeth out sackcloth, and sitteth on the ashes,

7 E l a trimis să se vestească în Ninive: „Din porunca regelui şi a nobililor săi, se cer următoarele: «Nici un om şi nici un animal, nici din cireadă, nici din turmă, să nu guste nimic, să nu pască şi să nu bea apă deloc!

and he crieth and saith in Nineveh by a decree of the king and his great ones, saying, `Man and beast, herd and flock -- let them not taste anything, let them not feed, even water let them not drink;

8 O amenii şi vitele să se acopere cu saci, să strige cu putere către Dumnezeu şi să se întoarcă de la calea lor cea rea şi de la violenţa lor, de care le sunt pline mâinile!

and cover themselves sackcloth let man and beast, and let them call unto God mightily, and let them turn back each from his evil way, and from the violence that in their hands.

9 C ine ştie? Poate Dumnezeu se va răzgândi, Îi va părea rău, Îşi va opri apriga Sa mânie şi astfel nu vom pieri!»“

Who knoweth? He doth turn back, and God hath repented, and hath turned back from the heat of His anger, and we do not perish.'

10 D umnezeu a văzut faptele lor şi cum se întorceau ei de la calea lor cea rea. Atunci Dumnezeu s-a căit de răul pe care zisese că li-l va face şi nu l-a mai făcut.

And God seeth their works, that they have turned back from their evil way, and God repenteth of the evil that He spake of doing to them, and he hath not done.
