1 C ând Domnul, Dumnezeul vostru, va fi nimicit neamurile din ţara pe care El v-o dă, după ce o veţi fi luat în stăpânire şi veţi fi locuit în cetăţile şi în casele lor,

`When Jehovah thy God doth cut off the nations, whose land Jehovah thy God is giving to thee, and thou hast succeeded them, and dwelt in their cities, and in their houses,

2 a tunci să alegeţi trei cetăţi în ţara pe care Domnul, Dumnezeul vostru, v-o dă în stăpânire.

three cities thou dost separate for thee in the midst of thy land which Jehovah thy God is giving to thee to possess it.

3 S ă construiţi drumuri până la ele şi să împărţiţi teritoriul ţării, pe care Domnul, Dumnezeul vostru, v-o dă ca moştenire, în trei părţi, astfel încât orice ucigaş să se refugieze acolo.

Thou dost prepare for thee the way, and hast divided into three parts the border of thy land which Jehovah thy God doth cause thee to inherit, and it hath been for the fleeing thither of every man-slayer.

4 A ceasta este porunca privitoare la ucigaşul care se va refugia acolo ca să trăiască, atunci când îl va omorî fără voie pe semenul său, fără să-i fi fost duşman mai dinainte.

`And this the matter of the man-slayer who fleeth thither, and hath lived: He who smiteth his neighbour unknowingly, and is not hating him heretofore,

5 D e exemplu, dacă un om se va duce la pădure împreună cu semenul lui ca să taie lemne şi, ridicând securea cu mâna pentru a tăia lemnul, i se va desprinde fierul securii din mâner şi-l va lovi pe semenul său omorându-l, el va trebui să se refugieze într-una din cetăţile acestea ca să-şi salveze viaţa.

even he who cometh in with his neighbour into a forest to hew wood, and his hand hath driven with an axe to cut the tree, and the iron hath slipped from the wood, and hath met his neighbour, and he hath died -- he doth flee unto one of these cities, and hath lived,

6 A ltfel, s-ar putea ca atunci când îl va urmări pe ucigaş, răzbunătorul sângelui, cuprins de mânie, să-l ajungă din urmă deoarece distanţa va fi prea mare şi să-l omoare pe cel ce nu era vinovat de moarte, pentru că nu-l duşmănise mai dinainte pe semenul său.

lest the redeemer of blood pursue after the man-slayer when his heart is hot, and hath overtaken him (because the way is great), and hath smitten him -- the life, and he hath no sentence of death, for he is not hating him heretofore;

7 D e aceea v-am poruncit să alegeţi trei cetăţi.

therefore I am commanding thee, saying, Three cities thou dost separate to thee.

8 C ând Domnul, Dumnezeul vostru, vă va mări teritoriul, aşa cum a promis strămoşilor voştri şi vă va da toată ţara, pe care le-a promis-o lor

`And if Jehovah thy God doth enlarge thy border, as He hath sworn to thy fathers, and hath given to thee all the land which He hath spoken to give to thy fathers --

9 ( doar dacă veţi fi păzit şi împlinit toate poruncile acestea, pe care eu vi le poruncesc astăzi, iubindu-L pe Domnul, Dumnezeul vostru, şi umblând întotdeauna pe căile Lui), atunci să adăugaţi încă trei cetăţi la acestea trei,

when thou keepest all this command to do it, which I am commanding thee to-day, to love Jehovah thy God, and to walk in His ways all the days -- then thou hast added to thee yet three cities to these three;

10 c a să nu fie vărsare de sânge nevinovat în ţara pe care Domnul, Dumnezeul vostru, v-o dă ca moştenire şi astfel să fiţi vinovaţi de acest sânge.

and innocent blood is not shed in the midst of thy land which Jehovah thy God is giving to thee -- an inheritance, and there hath been upon thee blood.

11 D ar dacă un om s-a refugiat într-una din aceste cetăţi după ce, din ură, şi-a pândit semenul, s-a aruncat asupra lui şi l-a lovit de moarte,

`And when a man is hating his neighbour, and hath lain in wait for him, and risen against him, and smitten him -- the life, and he hath died, and he hath fled unto one of these cities,

12 a tunci sfatul bătrânilor din cetatea lui să trimită să-l prindă şi să-l dea în mâna răzbunătorului de sânge ca să moară.

then the elders of his city have sent and taken him from thence, and given him into the hand of the redeemer of blood, and he hath died;

13 S ă nu vă fie milă de el, ci să ştergeţi astfel vina pentru sângele celui nevinovat din Israel ca să vă meargă bine.

thine eye hath no pity on him, and thou hast put away the innocent blood from Israel, and it is well with thee.

14 S ă nu muţi hotarul semenului tău, stabilit de înaintaşi în moştenirea ta, în ţara pe care Domnul, Dumnezeul tău, ţi-o dă în stăpânire. Reglementări privind declaraţiile martorilor

`Thou dost not remove a border of thy neighbour, which they of former times have made, in thine inheritance, which thou dost inherit in the land which Jehovah thy God is giving to thee to possess it.

15 U n singur martor nu va fi de ajuns pentru a învinui un om sau pentru a-l dovedi vinovat de vreo nelegiuire sau de vreun păcat. Orice vorbă trebuie să fie susţinută pe baza mărturiei a doi sau trei martori.

`One witness doth not rise against a man for any iniquity, and for any sin, in any sin which he sinneth; by the mouth of two witnesses, or by the mouth of three witnesses, is a thing established.

16 D acă un martor mincinos se va ridica împotriva unui om ca să-l acuze de vreun păcat,

`When a violent witness doth rise against a man, to testify against him apostacy,

17 c ei doi oameni, care se ceartă între ei, vor trebui să se înfăţişeze înaintea Domnului, înaintea preoţilor şi a judecătorilor care vor fi în slujbă în zilele acelea.

then have both the men who have the strife stood before Jehovah, before the priests and the judges who are in those days,

18 J udecătorii să cerceteze cu atenţie, iar, dacă martorul se dovedeşte mincinos şi că a depus o mărturie falsă împotriva fratelui său,

and the judges have searched diligently, and lo, the witness a false witness, a falsehood he hath testified against his brother:

19 a tunci să-i faceţi ceea ce el dorea să-i facă fratelui său. Să nimiciţi astfel răul din mijlocul vostru.

`Then ye have done to him as he devised to do to his brother, and thou hast put away the evil thing out of thy midst,

20 C eilalţi vor auzi şi se vor teme şi nu se va mai face vreo faptă aşa de rea în mijlocul vostru.

and those who are left do hear and fear, and add not to do any more according to this evil thing in thy midst;

21 S ă nu vă fie milă, ci să cereţi viaţă pentru viaţă, ochi pentru ochi, dinte pentru dinte, mână pentru mână, picior pentru picior.

and thine eye doth not pity -- life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot.
