1 Î n al treilea an al domniei lui Iehoiachim, regele lui Iuda, Nebucadneţar, împăratul Babilonului, a venit şi a asediat Ierusalimul.

In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah, come hath Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon to Jerusalem, and layeth siege against it;

2 S tăpânul l-a dat în mâna lui pe Iehoiachim, regele lui Iuda, precum şi o parte din vasele Casei lui Dumnezeu. Nebucadneţar a dus vasele în ţara Şinar, în templul zeului său; le-a dus în vistieria zeului lui.

and the Lord giveth into his hand Jehoiakim king of Judah, and some of the vessels of the house of God, and he bringeth them in the land of Shinar, the house of his god, and the vessels he hath brought in the treasure-house of his god.

3 Î mpăratul Nebucadneţar i-a poruncit lui Aşpenaz, căpetenia eunucilor săi, să aducă câţiva israeliţi de neam regal şi de viţă nobilă,

And the king saith, to Ashpenaz master of his eunuchs, to bring in out of the sons of Israel, (even of the royal seed, and of the chiefs,)

4 n işte tineri fără nici un fel de cusur fizic, plăcuţi la înfăţişare, pricepuţi în orice ramură a ştiinţei, cu minte ageră şi cu pricepere, în stare să slujească la palatul împăratului, pe care să-i înveţe scrierea şi limba caldeenilor.

lads in whom there is no blemish, and of good appearance, and skilful in all wisdom, and possessing knowledge, and teaching thought, and who have ability to stand in the palace of the king, and to teach them the literature and language of the Chaldeans.

5 Î mpăratul le-a rânduit pentru fiecare zi o parte din hrana şi din vinul de la masa lui, vrând să-i crească timp de trei ani, după care, la sfârşitul acestei perioade, ei urmau să rămână în slujba împăratului.

And the king doth appoint for them a rate, day by day, of the king's portion of food, and of the wine of his drinking, so as to nourish them three years, that at the end thereof they may stand before the king.

6 P rintre ei erau şi câţiva din seminţia lui Iuda: Daniel, Hanania, Mişael şi Azaria.

And there are among them out of the sons of Judah, Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah,

7 C ăpetenia eunucilor le-a pus însă alte nume: Beltşaţar lui Daniel, Şadrak lui Hanania, Meşak lui Mişael şi Abed-Nego lui Azaria.

and the chief of the eunuchs setteth names on them, and he setteth on Daniel, Belteshazzar; and on Hananiah, Shadrach; and on Mishael, Meshach; and on Azariah, Abed-Nego.

8 D aniel însă s-a hotărât să nu se întineze cu hrana împăratului şi nici cu vinul de la masa lui. De aceea l-a rugat pe căpetenia eunucilor să nu-l silească să se întineze.

And Daniel purposeth in his heart that he will not pollute himself with the king's portion of food, and with the wine of his drinking, and he seeketh of the chief of the eunuchs that he may not pollute himself.

9 D umnezeu a făcut ca Daniel să găsească îndurare şi bunăvoinţă înaintea căpeteniei eunucilor.

And God giveth Daniel for kindness and for mercies before the chief of the eunuchs;

10 Î nsă căpetenia eunucilor i-a zis lui Daniel: „Mă tem ca nu cumva stăpânul meu, împăratul, care v-a rânduit hrana şi băutura, să vadă feţele voastre mai posomorâte decât ale celorlalţi tineri de vârsta voastră şi să-mi puneţi capul în primejdie înaintea împăratului.“

and the chief of the eunuchs saith to Daniel, `I am fearing my lord the king, who hath appointed your food and your drink, for why doth he see your faces sadder than the lads which of your circle? then ye have made my head indebted to the king,'

11 A tunci Daniel i-a zis îngrijitorului însărcinat de căpetenia eunucilor cu supravegherea sa, a lui Hanania, a lui Mişael şi a lui Azaria:

And Daniel saith unto the Meltzar, whom the chief of the eunuchs hath appointed over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah,

12 „ Încearcă-i pe slujitorii tăi timp de zece zile: să ni se dea să mâncăm numai legume şi să bem – doar apă.

`Try, I pray thee, thy servants, ten days; and they give to us of the vegetables, and we eat, and water, and we drink;

13 A poi să te uiţi la înfăţişarea noastră şi la înfăţişarea tinerilor care mănâncă din hrana împăratului şi să faci slujitorilor tăi potrivit cu ceea ce vei vedea.“

and our appearance is seen before thee, and the appearance of the lads who are eating the king's portion of food, and as thou seest -- deal with thy servants.'

14 E l i-a ascultat în privinţa aceasta şi i-a încercat timp de zece zile.

And he hearkeneth to them, to this word, and trieth them ten days:

15 L a sfârşitul celor zece zile a văzut că la înfăţişare arătau mai bine, iar la trup erau mai plini decât toţi ceilalţi tineri care mâncau din hrana împăratului.

and at the end of ten days their appearance hath appeared better and fatter in flesh then any of the lads who are eating the king's portion of food.

16 Ş i astfel îngrijitorul a renunţat la hrana şi la vinul de la masa împăratului şi le-a dat legume.

And the Meltzar is taking away their portion of food, and the wine of their drink, and is giving to them vegetables.

17 A cestor patru tineri Dumnezeu le-a dat ştiinţă şi pricepere în orice fel de scriere şi înţelepciune. Daniel putea să înţeleagă orice fel de viziuni şi visuri.

As to these four lads, God hath given to them knowledge and understanding in every literature, and wisdom; and Daniel hath given instruction about every vision and dreams.

18 C ând s-a împlinit vremea rânduită de împărat ca toţi tinerii să fie aduşi la el, căpetenia eunucilor i-a adus înaintea lui Nebucadneţar,

And at the end of the days that the king had said to bring them in, bring them in doth the chief of the eunuchs before Nebuchadnezzar.

19 ş i împăratul a vorbit cu ei. Dar între toţi aceştia nu s-a găsit nici unul ca Daniel, Hanania, Mişael şi Azaria, astfel că ei au rămas în slujba împăratului.

And the king speaketh with them, and there hath none been found among them all like Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, and they stand before the king;

20 Î n orice problemă pentru care era nevoie de înţelepciune şi pricepere şi despre care îi întreba împăratul, el îi găsea de zece ori mai destoinici decât toţi magicienii şi descântătorii din întreaga lui împărăţie.

and any matter of wisdom understanding that the king hath sought of them, he findeth them ten hands above all the scribes, the enchanters, who in all his kingdom.

21 A şa a dus-o Daniel până în anul întâi al împăratului Cirus.

And Daniel is unto the first year of Cyrus the king.
