1 C u privire la ceea ce este jertfit idolilor, ştim că toţi avem cunoaştere, însă cunoaşterea îngâmfă, pe când dragostea zideşte.

And concerning the things sacrificed to idols, we have known that we all have knowledge: knowledge puffeth up, but love buildeth up;

2 D acă cineva crede că ştie ceva, încă nu are cunoaşterea necesară.

and if any one doth think to know anything, he hath not yet known anything according as it behoveth to know;

3 D acă însă cineva Îl iubeşte pe Dumnezeu, atunci el este cunoscut de către Dumnezeu.

and if any one doth love God, this one hath been known by Him.

4 A şadar, cu privire la mâncarea jertfită idolilor, ştim că, în lume, un idol este totuna cu nimic, şi că nu există decât un singur Dumnezeu.

Concerning the eating then of the things sacrificed to idols, we have known that an idol nothing in the world, and that there is no other God except one;

5 Î ntr-adevăr, chiar dacă există aşa-numiţi „zei“ în cer sau pe pământ, – aşa cum există de fapt mulţi „zei“ şi mulţi „domni“ –,

for even if there are those called gods, whether in heaven, whether upon earth -- as there are gods many and lords many --

6 t otuşi pentru noi există un singur Dumnezeu, Tatăl, din Care sunt toate şi pentru Care suntem şi noi, şi un singur Domn, Isus Cristos, prin Care sunt toate şi prin Care suntem şi noi.

yet to us one God, the Father, of whom the all things, and we to Him; and one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom the all things, and we through Him;

7 Î nsă nu toţi au cunoaşterea aceasta. Unii, fiind până acum atât de obişnuiţi cu idolii, mănâncă un lucru ca fiind jertfit idolilor şi astfel conştiinţa lor, fiind slabă, este pângărită.

but not in all men the knowledge, and certain with conscience of the idol, till now, as a thing sacrificed to an idol do eat, and their conscience, being weak, is defiled.

8 D ar nu mâncarea ne va duce mai aproape de Dumnezeu; dacă nu mâncăm, nu pierdem nimic, iar dacă mâncăm, nu câştigăm nimic.

But victuals do not commend us to God, for neither if we may eat are we in advance; nor if we may not eat, are we behind;

9 A veţi însă grijă ca nu cumva libertatea voastră să devină o pricină de poticnire pentru cei slabi.

but see, lest this privilege of yours may become a stumbling-block to the infirm,

10 C ăci dacă cineva te vede pe tine, care ai cunoaștere, că mănânci în templul unui idol, oare conştiinţa lui slabă nu-l va încuraja să mănânce ceea ce este jertfit idolilor?

for if any one may see thee that hast knowledge in an idol's temple reclining at meat -- shall not his conscience -- he being infirm -- be emboldened to eat the things sacrificed to idols,

11 A stfel, cel slab este distrus prin cunoaşterea ta, el, fratele pentru care a murit Cristos!

and the brother who is infirm shall perish by thy knowledge, because of whom Christ died?

12 C ând păcătuieşti astfel împotriva fraţilor şi le răneşti conştiinţa, păcătuieşti împotriva lui Cristos.

and thus sinning in regard to the brethren, and smiting their weak conscience -- in regard to Christ ye sin;

13 D e aceea, dacă o mâncare îl face pe fratele meu să se poticnească, atunci nu voi mânca niciodată carne, ca să nu-l fac pe fratele meu să se poticnească.

wherefore, if victuals cause my brother to stumble, I may eat no flesh -- to the age -- that my brother I may not cause to stumble.
