1 D e acolo, Avraam a călătorit spre ţinutul Neghev şi a locuit între Kadeş şi Şur. În timp ce locuia ca străin în Gherar,

And Abraham journeyeth from thence toward the land of the south, and dwelleth between Kadesh and Shur, and sojourneth in Gerar;

2 e l pretindea că soţia sa, Sara, este sora lui. Regele Abimelek din Gherar a trimis după Sara pe care a luat-o de soţie.

and Abraham saith concerning Sarah his wife, `She is my sister;' and Abimelech king of Gerar sendeth and taketh Sarah.

3 D ar Dumnezeu a venit la Abimelek noaptea într-un vis şi i-a zis: – Vei muri din cauza femeii pe care ai luat-o de soţie, deoarece ea este măritată.

And God cometh in unto Abimelech in a dream of the night, and saith to him, `Lo, thou a dead man, because of the woman whom thou hast taken -- and she married to a husband.'

4 Î ntrucât nu se atinsese de ea, Abimelek a spus: – Stăpâne, vei distruge Tu un popor nevinovat?

And Abimelech hath not drawn near unto her, and he saith, `Lord, also a righteous nation dost thou slay?

5 N u mi-a spus el că este sora lui? Şi ea însăşi a mărturisit că el este fratele ei. Am făcut acest lucru în curăţie de inimă şi cu mâini nevinovate.

hath not he himself said to me, She my sister! and she, even she herself, said, He my brother; in the integrity of my heart, and in the innocency of my hands, I have done this.'

6 A tunci Dumnezeu i-a zis în vis: – Ştiu că ai făcut acest lucru cu integritate, dar te-am oprit să păcătuieşti împotriva Mea; de aceea nu te-am lăsat să te atingi de ea.

And God saith unto him in the dream, `Yea, I -- I have known that in the integrity of thy heart thou hast done this, and I withhold thee, even I, from sinning against Me, therefore I have not suffered thee to come against her;

7 A cum, dă-i bărbatului soţia înapoi! Întrucât este profet, el se va ruga pentru tine şi vei trăi. Dar, dacă nu i -o dai înapoi, să ştii că vei muri, tu şi toţi ai tăi.

and now send back the man's wife, for he inspired, and he doth pray for thee, and live thou; and if thou do not send back, know that dying thou dost die, thou, and all that thou hast.'

8 A bimelek s-a sculat dis-de-dimineaţă, i-a chemat pe toţi curtenii săi, le-a istorisit toate aceste lucruri, iar bărbaţii s-au temut foarte tare.

And Abimelech riseth early in the morning, and calleth for all his servants, and speaketh all these words in their ears; and the men fear exceedingly;

9 A poi Abimelek l-a chemat pe Avraam şi l-a întrebat: – Ce ne-ai făcut? Cu ce-am păcătuit împotriva ta ca să aduci o vină aşa de mare peste mine şi peste regatul meu? Mi-ai făcut ceea ce n-ar fi trebuit.

and Abimelech calleth for Abraham, and saith to him, `What hast thou done to us? and what have I sinned against thee, that thou hast brought upon me, and upon my kingdom, a great sin? works which are not done thou hast done with me.'

10 C e urmăreai când ai făcut acest lucru?

Abimelech also saith unto Abraham, `What hast thou seen that thou hast done this thing?'

11 A vraam i-a răspuns: – Am făcut acest lucru gândindu-mă că nu este frică de Dumnezeu în acest loc şi temându-mă că mă veţi omorî din pricina soţiei mele.

And Abraham saith, `Because I said, `Surely the fear of God is not in this place, and they have slain me for the sake of my wife;

12 D e altfel, ea este într-adevăr sora mea, fiica tatălui meu, dar nu şi fiica mamei mele şi a ajuns soţia mea.

and also, truly she is my sister, daughter of my father, only not daughter of my mother, and she becometh my wife;

13 C ând Dumnezeu m-a chemat să plec din casa tatălui meu, i-am cerut această favoare: ca oriunde vom merge să spună despre mine că sunt fratele ei.

and it cometh to pass, when God hath caused me to wander from my father's house, that I say to her, This thy kindness which thou dost with me: at every place whither we come, say of me, He my brother.'

14 A tunci Abimelek a luat oi şi boi, sclavi şi sclave, i le-a dat lui Avraam şi i-a dat-o înapoi şi pe Sara, soţia lui.

And Abimelech taketh sheep and oxen, and servants and handmaids, and giveth to Abraham, and sendeth back to him Sarah his wife;

15 A bimelek i-a zis: „Ţara mea este înaintea ta; locuieşte unde-ţi place.“

and Abimelech saith, `Lo, my land before thee, where it is good in thine eyes, dwell;'

16 I ar Sarei i-a zis: „Iată, îi dau fratelui tău o mie de şecheli de argint. Ei sunt dovada că eşti fără vină înaintea tuturor; eşti pe deplin dezvinovăţită.“

and to Sarah he hath said, `Lo, I have given a thousand silverlings to thy brother; lo, it is to thee a covering of eyes, to all who are with thee;' and by all this she is reasoned with.

17 A tunci Avraam s-a rugat lui Dumnezeu, iar Dumnezeu i-a vindecat pe Abimelek, pe soţia lui, precum şi pe sclavele lui, pentru ca ele să poată avea din nou copii,

And Abraham prayeth unto God, and God healeth Abimelech and his wife, and his handmaids, and they bear:

18 d eoarece Domnul închisese pântecele tuturor celor de la curtea lui Abimelek din cauza Sarei, soţia lui Avraam.

for Jehovah restraining had restrained every womb of the house of Abimelech, because of Sarah, Abraham's wife.
