1 P opoare, ascultaţi lucrul acesta! Locuitori ai lumii, luaţi aminte,

To the Overseer. -- By sons of Korah. A Psalm. Hear this, all ye peoples, Give ear, all ye inhabitants of the world.

2 s labi şi puternici, bogaţi şi săraci împreună!

Both low and high, together rich and needy.

3 G ura mea va vorbi cu înţelepciune, iar gândurile inimii mele vor fi iscusite.

My mouth speaketh wise things, And the meditations of my heart things of understanding.

4 Î mi voi pleca urechea la proverbe, îmi voi începe ghicitoarea în sunet de liră.

I incline to a simile mine ear, I open with a harp my riddle:

5 D e ce să mă tem în zilele rele, când mă împresoară răutatea înşelătorilor mei,

Why do I fear in days of evil? The iniquity of my supplanters doth compass me.

6 a celor ce se încred în averile lor şi se laudă cu mulţimea bogăţiilor lor?

Those trusting on their wealth, And in the multitude of their riches, Do shew themselves foolish.

7 N imeni nu poate răscumpăra viaţa semenului său, nici nu-I poate da lui Dumnezeu preţul răscumpărării lui.

A brother doth no one at all ransom, He doth not give to God his atonement.

8 P reţul răscumpărării pentru viaţa lui este atât de mare, încât nu va putea plăti niciodată,

And precious the redemption of their soul, And it hath ceased -- to the age.

9 c a să trăiască veşnic şi să nu vadă groapa.

And still he liveth for ever, He seeth not the pit.

10 S e vede că şi înţelepţii mor, şi cel fără minte şi bruta pier împreună, părăsindu-şi averile în folosul altora.

For he seeth wise men die, Together the foolish and brutish perish, And have left to others their wealth.

11 T otuşi îşi imaginează că-şi vor stăpâni casele pe vecie şi că locuinţele lor vor dăinui din neam în neam; de aceea şi-au numit proprietăţile după înseşi numele lor.

Their heart: Their houses to the age, Their tabernacles to all generations. They proclaimed their names over the lands.

12 Î nsă omul bogat nu dăinuie; el se aseamănă cu vitele pentru tăiere.

And man in honour doth not remain, He hath been like the beasts, they have been cut off.

13 A ceasta este soarta celor ce se încred în ei şi a celor ce-i urmează, care le încuviinţează vorbele.

This their way folly for them, And their posterity with their sayings are pleased. Selah.

14 S unt sortiţi Locuinţei Morţilor ca nişte oi; moartea îi va paşte. Cei drepţi vor stăpâni peste ei dimineaţa. Chipul lor se va veşteji în Locuinţa Morţilor, departe de locuinţa lor.

As sheep for Sheol they have set themselves, Death doth afflict them, And the upright rule over them in the morning, And their form for consumption. Sheol a dwelling for him.

15 D ar Dumnezeu îmi va răscumpăra sufletul din Locuinţa Morţilor, căci El mă va lua sub ocrotirea Lui. Sela

Only, God doth ransom my soul from the hand of Sheol, For He doth receive me. Selah.

16 N u te îngrijora când se îmbogăţeşte cineva, când sporeşte bogăţia casei lui,

Fear not, when one maketh wealth, When the honour of his house is abundant,

17 c ăci nu ia nimic cu el la moartea sa; bogăţia lui nu se coboară după el.

For at his death he receiveth nothing, His honour goeth not down after him.

18 C hiar dacă sufletul lui a fost fericit în viaţă, chiar dacă s-a lăudat cu bucuriile de care şi-a făcut parte,

For his soul in his life he blesseth, (And they praise thee when thou dost well for thyself.)

19 t ot va merge la neamul părinţilor lui, care nu vor mai vedea lumina vreodată.

It cometh to the generation of his fathers, For ever they see not the light.

20 O mul bogat şi fără pricepere se aseamănă cu vitele pentru tăiere.

Man in honour, who understandest not, Hath been like the beasts, they have been cut off!
