1 Г алаадецът Ефтай беше силен и храбър мъж. Той беше син на една блудница; а Ефтаевият баща беше Галаад.

And Jephthah the Gileadite hath been a mighty man of valour, and he son of a woman, a harlot; and Gilead begetteth Jephthah,

2 Ж ената на Галаад му роди синове. А когато пораснаха синовете на жена му, изгониха Ефтай, като му казаха: Ти няма да наследиш в бащиния ни дом, защото си син на чужденка.

and the wife of Gilead beareth to him sons, and the wife's sons grow up and cast out Jephthah, and say to him, `Thou dost not inherit in the house of our father; for son of another woman thou.'

3 З атова Ефтай избяга от братята си и се засели в земята Тов. И при Ефтай се събраха безделници, които го следваха.

And Jephthah fleeth from the face of his brethren, and dwelleth in the land of Tob; and vain men gather themselves together unto Jephthah, and they go out with him.

4 А след известно време амонците воюваха против Израел.

And it cometh to pass, after a time, that the Bene-Ammon fight with Israel,

5 И когато амонците се биеха с Израел, галаадските старейшини отидоха да извикат Ефтай от земята Тов.

and it cometh to pass, when the Bene-Ammon have fought with Israel, that the elders of Gilead go to take Jephthah from the land of Tob;

6 Т е казаха на Ефтай: Ела и ни стани началник, за да се бием против амонците.

and they say unto Jephthah, `Come, and thou hast been to us for captain, and we fight against the Bene-Ammon.'

7 А Ефтай отговори на галаадските старейшини: Нали ме намразихте и нали ме изгонихте от бащиния ми дом? Защо сте дошли при мене сега, когато сте в утеснение?

And Jephthah saith to the elders of Gilead, `Have not ye hated me? and ye cast me out from the house of my father, and wherefore have ye come unto me now when ye are in distress?'

8 Г алаадските старейшини казаха на Ефтай: Върнали сме се сега при тебе, за да дойдеш с нас и да се биеш против амонците. Ти ще станеш наш началник над всички галаадски жители.

and the elders of Gilead say unto Jephthah, `Therefore, now, we have turned back unto thee; and thou hast gone with us, and fought against the Bene-Ammon, and thou hast been to us for head -- to all the inhabitants of Gilead.'

9 А Ефтай попита галаадските старейшини: Ако ме върнете у дома, за да воювам против амонците и Господ ми ги предаде, наистина ли ще стана началник над вас?

And Jephthah saith unto the elders of Gilead, `If ye are taking me back to fight against the Bene-Ammon, and Jehovah hath given them before me -- I, am I to you for a head?'

10 Г алаадските старейшини отвърнаха на Ефтай: Господ нека бъде свидетел помежду ни! Със сигурност ще направим според искането ти.

And the elders of Gilead say unto Jephthah, `Jehovah is hearkening between us -- if according to thy word we do not so.'

11 Т огава Ефтай отиде с галаадските старейшини и народът го постави глава и началник над тях. И Ефтай повтори всичките си думи пред Господа в Масфа.

And Jephthah goeth with the elders of Gilead, and the people set him over them for head and for captain, and Jephthah speaketh all his words before Jehovah in Mizpeh.

12 С лед това Ефтай прати посланици до царя на амонците да му предадат: Какво имаш против нас, че си дошъл при мене да се биеш против земята ми?

And Jephthah sendeth messengers unto the king of the Bene-Ammon, saying, `What -- to me and to thee, that thou hast come in unto me, to fight in my land.'

13 А царят на амонците отговори на Ефтаевите посланици: Израел, когато идваше от Египет, отне земята ми от Арнон до Явок и до Йордан. Затова сега върни тези земи по мирен път.

And the king of the Bene-Ammon saith unto the messengers of Jephthah, `Because Israel took my land in his coming up out of Egypt, from Arnon, and unto the Jabbok, and unto the Jordan; and now, restore them in peace.'

14 Т огава Ефтай пак прати посланици до царя на амонците да му кажат:

And Jephthah addeth yet and sendeth messengers unto the king of the Bene-Ammon,

15 Т ака казва Ефтай: Израел не е отнел моавската земя, нито земята на амонците;

and saith to him, `Thus said Jephthah, Israel took not the land of Moab, and the land of the Bene-Ammon,

16 н о когато Израел идваше от Египет и минаваше през пустинята към Червеното море, и беше дошъл в Кадис,

for in their coming up out of Egypt, Israel goeth in the wilderness unto the Red Sea, and cometh in to Kadesh,

17 И зраел прати посланици до едомския цар да му кажат: Позволи ми да прекося земята ти. А едомският цар не искаше и да чуе. Израел прати вест и до моавския цар; но и той не се съгласи. Затова Израел остана в Кадис.

and Israel sendeth messengers unto the king of Edom, saying, Let me pass over, I pray thee, through thy land, and the king of Edom hearkened not; and also unto the king of Moab hath sent, and he hath not been willing; and Israel abideth in Kadesh,

18 Т огава Израел мина през пустинята и обиколи едомската и моавската земи, и като мина от другата страна на моавската земя, разположи стан отвъд Арнон; но не навлезе в моавските предели, защото Арнон беше моавската граница.

and he goeth through the wilderness, and compasseth the land of Edom and the land of Moab, and cometh in at the rising of the sun of the land of Moab, and they encamp beyond Arnon, and have not come into the border of Moab, for Arnon the border of Moab.

19 С лед това Израел прати посланици до аморейския цар Сион, есевонския цар, да кажат: Позволи ни да преминем през земята ти до нашето място.

`And Israel sendeth messengers unto Sihon, king of the Amorite, king of Heshbon, and Israel saith to him, Let us pass over, we pray thee, through thy land, unto my place,

20 Н о Сион не се довери на Израел дотолкова, че да го пусне да мине през пределите му; а, напротив, събра целия си народ и като разположи стан в Яса, воюва против Израел.

and Sihon hath not trusted Israel to pass over through his border, and Sihon gathereth all his people, and they encamp in Jahaz, and fight with Israel;

21 Г оспод, Израелевият Бог, предаде Сион и целия му народ в ръката на Израел и те ги избиха. По този начин Израел завладя цялата земя на аморейците, жителите на онази територия.

and Jehovah, God of Israel, giveth Sihon and all his people into the hand of Israel, and they smite them, and Israel possesseth all the land of the Amorite, the inhabitant of that land,

22 Т е завладяха всички земи на аморейците от Арнон до Явок и от пустинята дори до Йордан.

and they possess all the border of the Amorite from Arnon, and unto the Jabbok, and from the wilderness, and unto the Jordan.

23 И сега, след като Господ, Израелевият Бог, е изгонил аморейците пред народа Си Израел, ти ли ще притежаваш земите им?

`And now, Jehovah, God of Israel, hath dispossessed the Amorite from the presence of His people Israel, and thou wouldst possess it!

24 Н е притежаваш ли онова, което твоят бог Хамос ти дава да притежаваш? Също и ние ще притежаваме земите на всички, които Йехова, нашият Бог, е изгонил пред нас.

That which Chemosh thy god causeth thee to possess -- dost thou not possess it? and all that which Jehovah our God hath dispossessed from our presence, -- it we do possess.

25 И сега ти в какво си по-добър от моавския цар Валак, Сепфоровия син? Борил ли се е той някога с Израел и воювал ли е някога против него?

`And now, thou at all better than Balak son of Zippor, king of Moab? did he at all strive with Israel? did he at all fight against them?

26 Т риста години са минали, откак Израел се е заселил в Есевон и в селата му, и във всички градове, които са разположени край Арнон. Защо през това време не сте ги превзели обратно?

In Israel's dwelling in Heshbon and in its towns, and in Aroer and in its towns, and in all the cities which by the sides of Arnon three hundred years -- and wherefore have ye not delivered them in that time?

27 Т ака че не аз съм съгрешил пред теб, а ти ме онеправдаваш, като воюваш против мене. Господ, Съдията, нека съди днес между израелтяните и амонците.

And I -- I have not sinned against thee, and thou art doing with me evil -- to fight against me. Jehovah, the Judge, doth judge to-day between the sons of Israel and the sons of Ammon.'

28 Н о царят на амонците не послуша думите, които Ефтай изпрати до него.

And the king of the Bene-Ammon hath not hearkened unto the words of Jephthah which he sent unto him,

29 Т огава Господният Дух дойде на Ефтай. Той премина през Галаад и Манасия, премина и през галаадската Масфа и от галаадската Масфа отиде против амонците.

and the Spirit of Jehovah is on Jephthah, and he passeth over Gilead and Manasseh, and passeth over Mizpeh of Gilead, and from Mizpeh of Gilead he hath passed over to the Bene-Ammon.

30 Е фтай направи оброк на Господа: Ако наистина предадеш амонците в ръката ми,

And Jephthah voweth a vow to Jehovah, and saith, `If Thou dost at all give the Bene-Ammon into my hand --

31 о нова, което излезе от вратата на къщата ми да ме посрещне, когато се върна с мир от амонците, ще бъде на Господа и ще го принеса всеизгаряне.

then it hath been, that which at all cometh out from the doors of my house to meet me in my turning back in peace from the Bene-Ammon -- it hath been to Jehovah, or I have offered up for it -- a burnt-offering.'

32 И така, Ефтай замина при амонците, за да воюва с тях, и Господ ги предаде в ръката му.

And Jephthah passeth over unto the Bene-Ammon to fight against them, and Jehovah giveth them into his hand,

33 Е фтай ги изтреби от Ароир до Минит, двадесет града, и до Авел-Керамим, с огромно поражение. Така амонците бяха покорени от израелтяните.

and he smiteth them from Aroer, and unto thy going in to Minnith, twenty cities, and unto the meadow of the vineyards -- a very great smiting; and the Bene-Ammon are humbled at the presence of the sons of Israel.

34 Т огава, когато Ефтай се връщаше у дома си в Масфа, дъщеря му излезе да го посрещне с тъпанчета и танци. Тя му беше единствена; освен нея Ефтай нямаше нито син, нито дъщеря.

And Jephthah cometh into Mizpeh, unto his house, and lo, his daughter is coming out to meet him with timbrels, and with choruses, and save her alone, he hath none, son or daughter.

35 И като я видя, той раздра дрехите си и каза: Горко ми, дъще моя! Ти ме съсипа от скръб и съм напълно покрусен; защото дадох обещание на Господа и не мога да се отрека.

And it cometh to pass, when he seeth her, that he rendeth his garments, and saith, `Alas, my daughter, thou hast caused me greatly to bend, and thou hast been among those troubling me; and I -- I have opened my mouth unto Jehovah, and I am not able to turn back.'

36 А тя му отговори: Татко, понеже си дал обещание на Господа, направи с мене според това, което си изрекъл, тъй като Господ е извършил за тебе възмездие над неприятелите ти, амонците.

And she saith unto him, `My father -- thou hast opened thy mouth unto Jehovah, do to me as it hath gone out from thy mouth, after that Jehovah hath done for thee vengeance on thine enemies, on the Bene-Ammon.'

37 К аза още на баща си: Само ми позволи едно нещо - пусни ме за два месеца да ида да се изкача на хълмовете заедно с приятелките ми, и да оплача девството си.

And she saith unto her father, `Let this thing be done to me; desist from me two months, and I go on, and have gone down on the hills, and I weep for my virginity -- I and my friends.'

38 Е фтай отговори: Върви. И я пусна за два месеца. И тя отиде по хълмовете с приятелките си и оплака девството си.

And he saith, `Go;' and he sendeth her away two months, and she goeth, she and her friends, and she weepeth for her virginity on the hills;

39 В края на двата месеца се върна при баща си и той постъпи с нея според оброка, който беше направил. А тя не беше имала мъж. И стана обичай в Израел

and it cometh to pass at the end of two months that she turneth back unto her father, and he doth to her his vow which he hath vowed, and she knew not a man; and it is a statute in Israel:

40 И зраелевите дъщери да ходят всяка година за четири дни, за да оплакват дъщерята на галаадеца Ефтай.

from time to time the daughters of Israel go to talk to the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite, four days in a year.
