1 A bimelec hijo de Jerobaal fue a Siquem, a los hermanos de su madre, y habló con ellos, y con toda la familia de la casa del padre de su madre, diciendo:

and Abimelech son of Jerubbaal goeth to Shechem, unto his mother's brethren, and speaketh unto them, and unto all the family of the house of his mother's father, saying,

2 Y o os ruego que digáis en oídos de todos los de Siquem: ¿Qué os parece mejor, que os gobiernen setenta hombres, todos los hijos de Jerobaal, o que os gobierne un solo hombre? Acordaos que yo soy hueso vuestro, y carne vuestra.

`Speak, I pray you, in the ears of all the masters of Shechem, Which good for you -- the ruling over you of seventy men (all the sons of Jerubbaal), or the ruling over you of one man? -- and ye have remembered that I your bone and your flesh.'

3 Y hablaron por él los hermanos de su madre en oídos de todos los de Siquem todas estas palabras; y el corazón de ellos se inclinó a favor de Abimelec, porque decían: Nuestro hermano es.

And his mother's brethren speak concerning him, in the ears of all the masters of Shechem, all these words, and their heart inclineth after Abimelech, for they said, `He our brother;'

4 Y le dieron setenta siclos de plata del templo de Baal-berit, con los cuales Abimelec alquiló hombres ociosos y vagabundos, que le siguieron.

and they give to him seventy silverings out of the house of Baal-Berith, and Abimelech hireth with them men, vain and unstable, and they go after him;

5 Y viniendo a la casa de su padre en Ofrá, mató a sus hermanos los hijos de Jerobaal, setenta varones, sobre una misma piedra; pero quedó Jotam el hijo menor de Jerobaal, que se escondió.

and he goeth into the house of his father at Ophrah, and slayeth his brethren, sons of Jerubbaal, seventy men, on one stone; and Jotham, youngest son of Jerubbaal, is left, for he was hidden.

6 E ntonces se juntaron todos los de Siquem con toda la casa de Miló, y fueron y eligieron a Abimelec por rey, cerca de la llanura del pilar que estaba en Siquem. Parábola de Jotam

And all the masters of Shechem are gathered together, and all the house of Millo, and come and cause Abimelech to reign for king at the oak of the camp which in Shechem;

7 C uando se lo dijeron a Jotam, fue y se puso en la cumbre del monte de Gerizim, y alzando su voz clamó y les dijo: Oídme, varones de Siquem, y así os oiga Dios.

and they declare to Jotham, and he goeth and standeth on the top of mount Gerizim, and lifteth up his voice, and calleth, and saith to them, `Hearken unto me, O masters of Shechem, and God doth hearken unto you:

8 F ueron una vez los árboles a elegir rey sobre sí, y dijeron al olivo: Reina sobre nosotros.

`The trees have diligently gone to anoint over them a king, and they say to the olive, Reign thou over us.

9 M as el olivo respondió: ¿He de dejar mi aceite, con el cual en mí se honra a Dios y a los hombres, para ir a ser grande sobre los árboles?

And the olive saith to them, Have I ceased from my fatness, by which they honour gods and men, that I have gone to stagger over the trees?

10 Y dijeron los árboles a la higuera: Anda tú, reina sobre nosotros.

And the trees say to the fig, Come thou, reign over us.

11 Y respondió la higuera: ¿He de dejar mi dulzura y mi buen fruto, para ir a ser grande sobre los árboles?

And the fig saith to them, Have I ceased from my sweetness, and my good increase, that I have gone to stagger over the trees?

12 D ijeron luego los árboles a la vid: Pues ven tú, reina sobre nosotros.

`And the trees say to the vine, Come thou, reign over us.

13 Y la vid les respondió: ¿He de dejar mi mosto, que alegra a Dios y a los hombres, para ir a ser grande sobre los árboles?

And the vine saith to them, Have I ceased from my new wine, which is rejoicing gods and men, that I have gone to stagger over the trees?

14 D ijeron entonces todos los árboles a la zarza: Anda tú, reina sobre nosotros.

And all the trees say unto the bramble, Come thou, reign over us.

15 Y la zarza respondió a los árboles: Si en verdad me elegís por rey sobre vosotros, venid y cobijaos a mi sombra; y si no, salga fuego de la zarza y devore a los cedros del Líbano.

And the bramble saith unto the trees, If in truth ye are anointing me for king over you, come, take refuge in my shadow; and if not -- fire cometh out from the bramble, and devoureth the cedars of Lebanon.

16 A hora, pues, si con verdad y con integridad habéis procedido en hacer rey a Abimelec, y si habéis actuado bien con Jerobaal y con su casa, y si le habéis pagado conforme a la obra de sus manos

`And, now, if in truth and in sincerity ye have acted, when ye make Abimelech king; and if ye have done good with Jerubbaal, and with his house; and if according to the deed of his hands ye have done to him --

17 ( porque mi padre peleó por vosotros, y expuso su vida al peligro para libraros de mano de Madián,

because my father hath fought for you, and doth cast away his life from, and deliver you from the hand of Midian;

18 y vosotros os habéis levantado hoy contra la casa de mi padre, y habéis matado a sus hijos, setenta varones sobre una misma piedra; y habéis puesto por rey sobre los de Siquem a Abimelec hijo de su criada, por cuanto es vuestro hermano);

and ye have risen against the house of my father to-day, and slay his sons, seventy men, on one stone, and cause Abimelech son of his handmaid to reign over the masters of Shechem, because he your brother --

19 s i con verdad y con integridad habéis procedido hoy con Jerobaal y con su casa, que lo disfrutéis con Abimelec, y él lo disfrute con vosotros.

yea, if in truth and in sincerity ye have acted with Jerubbaal and with his house this day, rejoice ye in Abimelech, and he doth rejoice -- even he -- in you;

20 Y si no, fuego salga de Abimelec, que consuma a los de Siquem y a la casa de Miló, y fuego salga de los de Siquem y de la casa de Miló, que consuma a Abimelec.

and if not -- fire cometh out from Abimelech and devoureth the masters of Shechem and the house of Millo, and fire cometh out from the masters of Shechem and from the house of Millo, and devoureth Abimelech.'

21 Y escapó Jotam y huyó, y se fue a Beer, y allí se estuvo por miedo de Abimelec su hermano.

And Jotham hasteth, and fleeth, and goeth to Beer, and dwelleth there, from the face of Abimelech his brother.

22 D espués que Abimelec hubo dominado sobre Israel tres años,

And Abimelech is prince over Israel three years,

23 e nvió Dios un espíritu de discordia entre Abimelec y los hombres de Siquem, y los de Siquem se levantaron contra Abimelec;

and God sendeth an evil spirit between Abimelech and the masters of Shechem, and the masters of Shechem deal treacherously with Abimelech,

24 p ara que el crimen hecho con los setenta hijos de Jerobaal, y la sangre de ellos, recayera sobre Abimelec su hermano que los mató, y sobre los hombres de Siquem que le habían ayudado a matar a sus hermanos.

for the coming in of the violence the seventy sons of Jerubbaal, and of their blood to place on Abimelech their brother, who slew them, and on the masters of Shechem, who strengthened his hands to slay his brethren.

25 Y los de Siquem pusieron en las cumbres de los montes asechadores que robaban a todos los que pasaban junto a ellos por el camino; de lo cual fue dado aviso a Abimelec.

And the masters of Shechem set for him ambushes on the top of the hills, and rob every one who passeth over by them in the way, and it is declared to Abimelech.

26 Y Gaal hijo de Ebed vino con sus hermanos y se pasaron a Siquem, y los de Siquem pusieron en él su confianza.

And Gaal son of Ebed cometh -- also his brethren -- and they pass over into Shechem, and the masters of Shechem trust in him,

27 Y saliendo al campo, vendimiaron sus viñedos, y pisaron la uva e hicieron fiesta; y entrando en el templo de sus dioses, comieron y bebieron, y maldijeron a Abimelec.

and go out into the field, and gather their vineyards, and tread, and make praises, and go into the house of their god, and eat and drink, and revile Abimelech.

28 Y Gaal hijo de Ebed dijo: ¿Quién es Abimelec, y qué es Siquem, para que nosotros le sirvamos? ¿No es hijo de Jerobaal, y no es Zebul ayudante suyo? Servid a los varones de Hamor padre de Siquem; pero ¿por qué le hemos de servir a él?

And Gaal son of Ebed saith, `Who Abimelech, and who Shechem, that we serve him? is not son of Jerubbaal? and Zebul his commander? Serve ye the men of Hamor father of Shechem, and wherefore do we serve him -- we?

29 O jalá estuviera este pueblo bajo mi mano, pues yo arrojaría luego a Abimelec, y diría a Abimelec: Aumenta tus ejércitos, y sal.

and oh that this people were in my hand -- then I turn Abimelech aside;' and he saith to Abimelech, `Increase thy host, and come out.'

30 C uando Zebul gobernador de la ciudad oyó las palabras de Gaal hijo de Ebed, se encendió en ira,

And Zebul, prince of the city, heareth the words of Gaal son of Ebed, and his anger burneth,

31 y envió secretamente mensajeros a Abimelec, diciendo: He aquí que Gaal hijo de Ebed y sus hermanos han venido a Siquem, y he aquí que están sublevando la ciudad contra ti.

and he sendeth messengers unto Abimelech deceitfully, saying, `Lo, Gaal son of Ebed and his brethren are coming into Shechem, and lo, they are fortifying the city against thee;

32 L evántate, pues, ahora de noche, tú y el pueblo que está contigo, y pon emboscadas en el campo.

and, now, rise by night, thou and the people who with thee, and lay wait in the field,

33 Y por la mañana al salir el sol madruga y cae sobre la ciudad; y cuando él y el pueblo que está con él salgan contra ti, tú harás con él según se presente la ocasión.

and it hath been, in the morning, about the rising of the sun, thou dost rise early, and hast pushed against the city; and lo, he and the people who with him are going out unto thee -- and thou hast done to him as thy hand doth find.'

34 L evantándose, pues, de noche Abimelec y todo el pueblo que con él estaba, pusieron emboscada contra Siquem con cuatro compañías.

And Abimelech riseth, and all the people who with him, by night, and they lay wait against Shechem -- four detachments;

35 Y Gaal hijo de Ebed salió, y se puso a la entrada de la puerta de la ciudad; y Abimelec y todo el pueblo que con él estaba, se levantaron de la emboscada.

and Gaal son of Ebed goeth out, and standeth at the opening of the gate of the city, and Abimelech riseth -- also the people who with him -- from the ambush,

36 Y viendo Gaal al pueblo, dijo a Zebul: He allí gente que desciende de las cumbres de los montes. Y Zebul le respondió: Tú ves la sombra de los montes como si fueran hombres.

and Gaal seeth the people, and saith unto Zebul, `Lo, people are coming down from the top of the hills;' and Zebul saith unto him, `The shadow of the hills thou art seeing like men.'

37 V olvió Gaal a hablar, y dijo: He allí gente que desciende de en medio de la tierra, y una tropa viene por el camino de la encina de los adivinos.

And Gaal addeth yet to speak, and saith, `Lo, people are coming down from the high part of the land, and another detachment is coming by the way of the oak of Meonenim.'

38 Y Zebul le respondió: ¿Dónde está ahora tu boca con que decías: Quién es Abimelec para que le sirvamos? ¿No es éste el pueblo que tenías en poco? Sal, pues, ahora, y pelea con él.

And Zebul saith unto him, `Where now thy mouth, in that thou sayest, Who Abimelech that we serve him? is not this the people against which thou hast kicked? go out, I pray thee now, and fight against it.'

39 Y Gaal salió delante de los de Siquem, y peleó contra Abimelec.

And Gaal goeth out before the masters of Shechem, and fighteth against Abimelech,

40 M as lo persiguió Abimelec, y Gaal huyó delante de él; y cayeron heridos muchos hasta la entrada de la puerta.

and Abimelech pursueth him, and he fleeth from his presence, and many fall wounded -- unto the opening of the gate.

41 Y Abimelec se quedó en Arumá; y Zebul echó fuera a Gaal y a sus hermanos, para que no morasen en Siquem. Destrucción de Siquem y toma de Migdal-Siquem

And Abimelech abideth in Arumah, and Zebul casteth out Gaal and his brethren from dwelling in Shechem.

42 A conteció al siguiente día, que el pueblo salió al campo; y fue dado aviso a Abimelec,

And it cometh to pass, on the morrow, that the people go out to the field, and they declare to Abimelech,

43 e l cual, tomando gente, la repartió en tres compañías, y puso emboscadas en el campo; y cuando miró, he aquí el pueblo que salía de la ciudad; y se levantó contra ellos y los atacó.

and he taketh the people, and divideth them into three detachments, and layeth wait in a field, and looketh, and lo, the people are coming out from the city, and he riseth against them, and smiteth them.

44 P orque Abimelec y la compañía que estaba con él acometieron con ímpetu, y se detuvieron a la entrada de la puerta de la ciudad, y las otras dos compañías acometieron a todos los que estaban en el campo, y los mataron.

And Abimelech and the detachments who with him have pushed on, and stand at the opening of the gate of the city, and the two detachments have pushed against all who are in the field, and smite them,

45 Y Abimelec peleó contra la ciudad todo aquel día, y tomó la ciudad, y mató al pueblo que en ella estaba; y asoló la ciudad, y la sembró de sal.

and Abimelech hath fought against the city all that day, and captureth the city, and the people who in it he hath slain, and he breaketh down the city, and soweth it salt.

46 C uando oyeron esto todos los que estaban en la torre de Siquem, se metieron en la cripta del templo del dios Berit.

And all the masters of the tower of Shechem hear, and go in unto the high place of the house of the god Berith,

47 Y fue dado aviso a Abimelec, de que estaban reunidos todos los hombres de la torre de Siquem.

and it is declared to Abimelech that all the masters of the tower of Shechem have gathered themselves together,

48 E ntonces subió Abimelec al monte de Salmón, él y toda la gente que con él estaba; y tomó Abimelec un hacha en su mano, y cortó una rama de los árboles, y levantándola se la puso sobre sus hombros, diciendo al pueblo que estaba con él: Lo que me habéis visto hacer, apresuraos a hacerlo como yo.

and Abimelech goeth up to mount Zalmon, he and all the people who with him, and Abimelech taketh the great axe in his hand, and cutteth off a bough of the trees, and lifteth it up, and setteth on his shoulder, and saith unto the people who with him, `What ye have seen I have done -- haste, do ye like it.'

49 Y todo el pueblo cortó también cada uno su rama, y siguieron a Abimelec, y las pusieron junto a la fortaleza, y prendieron fuego con ellas a la fortaleza, de modo que todos los de la torre de Siquem murieron, como unos mil hombres y mujeres.

And all the people also cut down each one his bough, and go after Abimelech, and set at the high place, and burn by these the high place with fire, and also all the men of the tower of Shechem die, about a thousand men and women.

50 D espués Abimelec se fue a Tebes, y puso sitio a Tebes, y la tomó.

And Abimelech goeth unto Thebez, and encampeth against Thebez, and captureth it,

51 E n medio de aquella ciudad había una torre fortificada, a la cual se retiraron todos los hombres y las mujeres, y todos los señores de la ciudad; y cerrando tras sí las puertas, se subieron al techo de la torre.

and a strong tower hath been in the midst of the city, and thither flee do all the men and the women, and all the masters of the city, and they shut behind them, and go up on the roof of the tower.

52 Y vino Abimelec a la torre, y combatiéndola, llegó hasta la puerta de la torre para prenderle fuego.

And Abimelech cometh unto the tower, and fighteth against it, and draweth nigh unto the opening of the tower to burn it with fire,

53 M as una mujer dejó caer un pedazo de una rueda de molino sobre la cabeza de Abimelec, y le rompió el cráneo.

and a certain woman doth cast a piece of a rider on the head of Abimelech, and breaketh his skull,

54 E ntonces llamó apresuradamente a su escudero, y le dijo: Saca tu espada y mátame, para que no se diga de mí: Una mujer lo mató. Y su escudero le atravesó, y murió.

and he calleth hastily unto the young man bearing his weapons, and saith to him, `Draw thy sword, and thou hast put me to death, lest they say of me -- A woman slew him;' and his young man pierced him through, and he dieth.

55 Y cuando los israelitas vieron muerto a Abimelec, se fueron cada uno a su casa.

And the men of Israel see that Abimelech dead, and go each one to his place;

56 A sí pagó Dios a Abimelec el mal que hizo contra su padre, matando a sus setenta hermanos.

and God turneth back the evil of Abimelech which he did to his father to slay his seventy brethren;

57 Y todo el mal de los hombres de Siquem lo hizo Dios volver sobre sus cabezas, y vino sobre ellos la maldición de Jotam hijo de Jerobaal.

and all the evil of the men of Shechem hath God turned back on their head, and come unto them doth the cursing of Jotham son of Jerubbaal.
