1 H abía un hombre de los fariseos que se llamaba Nicodemo, un hombre importante entre los judíos.

And there was a man of the Pharisees, Nicodemus his name, a ruler of the Jews,

2 É ste vino a Jesús de noche, y le dijo: Rabí, sabemos que has venido de Dios como maestro; porque nadie puede hacer estas señales que tú haces, si no está Dios con él.

this one came unto him by night, and said to him, `Rabbi, we have known that from God thou hast come -- a teacher, for no one these signs is able to do that thou dost, if God may not be with him.'

3 R espondió Jesús y le dijo: De cierto, de cierto te digo, que el que no nace de nuevo, no puede ver el reino de Dios.

Jesus answered and said to him, `Verily, verily, I say to thee, If any one may not be born from above, he is not able to see the reign of God;'

4 N icodemo le dijo: ¿Cómo puede un hombre nacer siendo viejo? ¿Puede acaso entrar por segunda vez en el vientre de su madre, y nacer?

Nicodemus saith unto him, `How is a man able to be born, being old? is he able into the womb of his mother a second time to enter, and to be born?'

5 R espondió Jesús: De cierto, de cierto te digo, que el que no nace de agua y del Espíritu, no puede entrar en el reino de Dios.

Jesus answered, `Verily, verily, I say to thee, If any one may not be born of water, and the Spirit, he is not able to enter into the reign of God;

6 L o que es nacido de la carne, carne es; y lo que es nacido del Espíritu, espíritu es.

that which hath been born of the flesh is flesh, and that which hath been born of the Spirit is spirit.

7 N o te asombres de que te dije: Os es necesario nacer de nuevo.

`Thou mayest not wonder that I said to thee, It behoveth you to be born from above;

8 E l viento sopla donde quiere, y oyes su sonido; pero no sabes de dónde viene, ni adónde va; así es todo aquel que es nacido del Espíritu.

the Spirit where he willeth doth blow, and his voice thou dost hear, but thou hast not known whence he cometh, and whither he goeth; thus is every one who hath been born of the Spirit.'

9 R espondió Nicodemo y le dijo: ¿Cómo puede ser eso?

Nicodemus answered and said to him, `How are these things able to happen?'

10 R espondió Jesús y le dijo: Tú eres el maestro de Israel, ¿y no conoces estas cosas?

Jesus answered and said to him, `Thou art the teacher of Israel -- and these things thou dost not know!

11 D e cierto, de cierto te digo, que hablamos lo que sabemos, y testificamos de lo que hemos visto; y no recibís nuestro testimonio.

`Verily, verily, I say to thee -- What we have known we speak, and what we have seen we testify, and our testimony ye do not receive;

12 S i os he dicho cosas de la tierra, y no creéis, ¿cómo creeréis si os digo las del cielo?

if the earthly things I said to you, and ye do not believe, how, if I shall say to you the heavenly things, will ye believe?

13 Y nadie ha subido al cielo, sino el que descendió del cielo; el Hijo del Hombre, que está en el cielo.

and no one hath gone up to the heaven, except he who out of the heaven came down -- the Son of Man who is in the heaven.

14 Y como Moisés levantó la serpiente en el desierto, así también tiene que ser levantado el Hijo del Hombre,

`And as Moses did lift up the serpent in the wilderness, so it behoveth the Son of Man to be lifted up,

15 p ara que todo aquel que cree en él, no perezca, sino que tenga vida eterna. De tal manera amó Dios al mundo

that every one who is believing in him may not perish, but may have life age-during,

16 P orque de tal manera amó Dios al mundo, que ha dado a su Hijo unigénito, para que todo aquel que cree en él, no perezca, sino que tenga vida eterna.

for God did so love the world, that His Son -- the only begotten -- He gave, that every one who is believing in him may not perish, but may have life age-during.

17 P orque Dios no envió a su Hijo al mundo para condenar al mundo, sino para que el mundo sea salvo por medio de él.

For God did not send His Son to the world that he may judge the world, but that the world may be saved through him;

18 E l que cree en él, no es condenado; pero el que no cree, ya ha sido condenado, porque no ha creído en el nombre del unigénito Hijo de Dios.

he who is believing in him is not judged, but he who is not believing hath been judged already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

19 Y esta es la condenación: que la luz vino al mundo, y los hombres amaron más las tinieblas que la luz, porque sus obras eran malas.

`And this is the judgment, that the light hath come to the world, and men did love the darkness rather than the light, for their works were evil;

20 P orque todo aquel que obra el mal, aborrece la luz y no viene a la luz, para que sus obras no sean redargüidas.

for every one who is doing wicked things hateth the light, and doth not come unto the light, that his works may not be detected;

21 P ero el que practica la verdad viene a la luz, para que sean manifiestas sus obras, que han sido hechas según Dios. El amigo del esposo

but he who is doing the truth doth come to the light, that his works may be manifested, that in God they are having been wrought.'

22 D espués de esto, vino Jesús con sus discípulos a la tierra de Judea, y pasó allí algún tiempo con ellos, y bautizaba.

After these things came Jesus and his disciples to the land of Judea, and there he did tarry with them, and was baptizing;

23 J uan también bautizaba en Enón, cerca de Salim, porque había allí muchas aguas; y acudían y eran bautizados.

and John was also baptizing in Aenon, nigh to Salem, because there were many waters there, and they were coming and were being baptized --

24 P orque Juan no había sido aún encarcelado.

for John was not yet cast into the prison --

25 H ubo, pues, una discusión entre los discípulos de Juan y un judío acerca de la purificación.

there arose then a question from the disciples of John with Jews about purifying,

26 Y vinieron a Juan y le dijeron: Rabí, el que estaba contigo al otro lado del Jordán, de quien tú diste testimonio, mira, ése está bautizando, y todos vienen a él.

and they came unto John, and said to him, `Rabbi, he who was with thee beyond the Jordan, to whom thou didst testify, lo, this one is baptizing, and all are coming unto him.'

27 R espondió Juan y dijo: Un hombre no puede recibir nada, si no se le ha dado del cielo.

John answered and said, `A man is not able to receive anything, if it may not have been given him from the heaven;

28 V osotros mismos me sois testigos de que dije: Yo no soy el Cristo, sino que soy enviado delante de él.

ye yourselves do testify to me that I said, I am not the Christ, but, that I am having been sent before him;

29 E l que tiene a la novia, es el novio; pero el amigo del novio, que está a su lado y le oye, se alegra mucho por la voz del novio; así pues, este gozo mío se ha completado.

he who is having the bride is bridegroom, and the friend of the bridegroom, who is standing and hearing him, with joy doth rejoice because of the voice of the bridegroom; this, then, my joy hath been fulfilled.

30 E s necesario que él crezca, y que yo mengüe. El que viene de arriba

`Him it behoveth to increase, and me to become less;

31 E l que viene de arriba está por encima de todos; el que es de la tierra, es terrenal, y habla cosas terrenales; el que viene del cielo, está sobre todos.

he who from above is coming is above all; he who is from the earth, from the earth he is, and from the earth he speaketh; he who from the heaven is coming is above all.

32 Y lo que ha visto y oído, de eso testifica; y nadie recibe su testimonio.

`And what he hath seen and heard this he doth testify, and his testimony none receiveth;

33 E l que recibe su testimonio, ése certifica que Dios es veraz.

he who is receiving his testimony did seal that God is true;

34 P orque Aquel a quien Dios ha enviado, habla las palabras de Dios; pues Dios no da el Espíritu por medida.

for he whom God sent, the sayings of God he speaketh; for not by measure doth God give the Spirit;

35 E l Padre ama al Hijo, y todas las cosas las ha entregado en su mano.

the Father doth love the Son, and all things hath given into his hand;

36 E l que cree en el Hijo, tiene vida eterna; mas el que rehúsa creer en el Hijo, no verá la vida, sino que la ira de Dios permanece sobre él.

he who is believing in the Son, hath life age-during; and he who is not believing the Son, shall not see life, but the wrath of God doth remain upon him.'
