1 J ésus partit de là, et se rendit dans sa patrie. Ses disciples le suivirent.

Jesus went from the house of Jairus and came to His home town. His followers came after Him.

2 Q uand le sabbat fut venu, il se mit à enseigner dans la synagogue. Beaucoup de gens qui l'entendirent étaient étonnés et disaient: D'où lui viennent ces choses? Quelle est cette sagesse qui lui a été donnée, et comment de tels miracles se font-ils par ses mains?

On the Day of Rest He began to teach in the Jewish place of worship. Many people heard Him. They were surprised and wondered, saying, “Where did this Man get all this? What wisdom is this that has been given to Him? How can He do these powerful works with His hands?

3 N 'est-ce pas le charpentier, le fils de Marie, le frère de Jacques, de Joses, de Jude et de Simon? et ses soeurs ne sont-elles pas ici parmi nous? Et il était pour eux une occasion de chute.

Is He not a Man Who makes things from wood? Is He not the Son of Mary and the brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon? Do not His sisters live here with us?” The people were ashamed of Him and turned away from Him.

4 M ais Jésus leur dit: Un prophète n'est méprisé que dans sa patrie, parmi ses parents, et dans sa maison.

Jesus said to them, “One who speaks for God is respected everywhere but in his own country and among his own family and in his own house.”

5 I l ne put faire là aucun miracle, si ce n'est qu'il imposa les mains à quelques malades et les guérit.

So Jesus could do no powerful works there. But He did put His hands on a few sick people and healed them.

6 E t il s'étonnait de leur incrédulité. Jésus parcourait les villages d'alentour, en enseignant.

He wondered because they had no faith. But He went around to the towns and taught as He went. Jesus Calls Twelve Followers and Sends Them Out

7 A lors il appela les douze, et il commença à les envoyer deux à deux, en leur donnant pouvoir sur les esprits impurs.

Jesus called the twelve followers to Him and began to send them out two by two. He gave them power over demons.

8 I l leur prescrivit de ne rien prendre pour le voyage, si ce n'est un bâton; de n'avoir ni pain, ni sac, ni monnaie dans la ceinture;

He told them to take nothing along with them but a walking stick. They were not to take a bag or food or money in their belts.

9 d e chausser des sandales, et de ne pas revêtir deux tuniques.

They were to wear shoes. They were not to take two coats.

10 P uis il leur dit: Dans quelque maison que vous entriez, restez-y jusqu'à ce que vous partiez de ce lieu.

He said to them, “Whatever house you go into, stay there until you leave that town.

11 E t, s'il y a quelque part des gens qui ne vous reçoivent ni ne vous écoutent, retirez-vous de là, et secouez la poussière de vos pieds, afin que cela leur serve de témoignage.

Whoever does not take you in or listen to you, when you leave there, shake the dust off your feet. By doing that, you will speak against them. For sure, I tell you, it will be easier for the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah on the day men stand before God and are judged than for that city.”

12 I ls partirent, et ils prêchèrent la repentance.

Then they left. They preached that men should be sorry for their sins and turn from them.

13 I ls chassaient beaucoup de démons, et ils oignaient d'huile beaucoup de malades et les guérissaient.

They put out many demons. They poured oil on many people that were sick and healed them. John the Baptist Is Put in Prison

14 L e roi Hérode entendit parler de Jésus, dont le nom était devenu célèbre, et il dit: Jean Baptiste est ressuscité des morts, et c'est pour cela qu'il se fait par lui des miracles.

King Herod heard about Jesus because everyone was talking about Him. Some people said, “John the Baptist has been raised from the dead. That is why he is doing such powerful works.”

15 D 'autres disaient: C'est Élie. Et d'autres disaient: C'est un prophète comme l'un des prophètes.

Other people said, “He is Elijah.” Others said, “He is one who speaks for God like one of the early preachers.”

16 M ais Hérode, en apprenant cela, disait: Ce Jean que j'ai fait décapiter, c'est lui qui est ressuscité.

When Herod heard this, he said, “It is John the Baptist, whose head I cut off. He has been raised from the dead.”

17 C ar Hérode lui-même avait fait arrêter Jean, et l'avait fait lier en prison, à cause d'Hérodias, femme de Philippe, son frère, parce qu'il l'avait épousée,

For Herod had sent men to take John and put him into prison. He did this because of his wife, Herodias. She had been the wife of his brother Philip.

18 e t que Jean lui disait: Il ne t'est pas permis d'avoir la femme de ton frère.

John the Baptist had said to Herod, “It is wrong for you to have your brother’s wife.”

19 H érodias était irritée contre Jean, et voulait le faire mourir.

Herodias became angry with him. She wanted to have John the Baptist killed but she could not.

20 M ais elle ne le pouvait; car Hérode craignait Jean, le connaissant pour un homme juste et saint; il le protégeait, et, après l'avoir entendu, il était souvent perplexe, et l'écoutait avec plaisir.

Herod was afraid of John. He knew he was a good man and right with God, and he kept John from being hurt or killed. He liked to listen to John preach. But when he did, he became troubled. John the Baptist Is Killed

21 C ependant, un jour propice arriva, lorsque Hérode, à l'anniversaire de sa naissance, donna un festin à ses grands, aux chefs militaires et aux principaux de la Galilée.

Then Herodias found a way to have John killed. Herod gave a big supper on his birthday. He asked the leaders of the country and army captains and the leaders of Galilee to come.

22 L a fille d'Hérodias entra dans la salle; elle dansa, et plut à Hérode et à ses convives. Le roi dit à la jeune fille: Demande-moi ce que tu voudras, et je te le donnerai.

The daughter of Herodias came in and danced before them. This made Herod and his friends happy. The king said to the girl, “Ask me for whatever you want and I will give it to you.”

23 I l ajouta avec serment: Ce que tu me demanderas, je te le donnerai, fût-ce la moitié de mon royaume.

Then he made a promise to her, “Whatever you ask for, I will give it to you. I will give you even half of my nation.”

24 É tant sortie, elle dit à sa mère: Que demanderais-je? Et sa mère répondit: La tête de Jean Baptiste.

She went to her mother and asked, “What should I ask for?” The mother answered, “I want the head of John the Baptist.”

25 E lle s'empressa de rentrer aussitôt vers le roi, et lui fit cette demande: Je veux que tu me donnes à l'instant, sur un plat, la tête de Jean Baptiste.

At once the girl went to Herod. She said, “I want you to give me the head of John the Baptist on a plate now.”

26 L e roi fut attristé; mais, à cause de ses serments et des convives, il ne voulut pas lui faire un refus.

Herod was very sorry. He had to do it because of his promise and because of those who ate with him.

27 I l envoya sur-le-champ un garde, avec ordre d'apporter la tête de Jean Baptiste.

At once he sent one of his soldiers and told him to bring the head of John the Baptist. The soldier went to the prison and cut off John’s head.

28 L e garde alla décapiter Jean dans la prison, et apporta la tête sur un plat. Il la donna à la jeune fille, et la jeune fille la donna à sa mère.

He took John’s head in on a plate and gave it to the girl. The girl gave it to her mother.

29 L es disciples de Jean, ayant appris cela, vinrent prendre son corps, et le mirent dans un sépulcre.

John’s followers heard this. They went and took his body and buried it. The Feeding of the Five Thousand

30 L es apôtres, s'étant rassemblés auprès de Jésus, lui racontèrent tout ce qu'ils avaient fait et tout ce qu'ils avaient enseigné.

The followers of Jesus came back to Him. They told Jesus all they had done and taught.

31 J ésus leur dit: Venez à l'écart dans un lieu désert, et reposez-vous un peu. Car il y avait beaucoup d'allants et de venants, et ils n'avaient même pas le temps de manger.

He said to them, “Come away from the people. Be by yourselves and rest.” There were many people coming and going. They had had no time even to eat.

32 I ls partirent donc dans une barque, pour aller à l'écart dans un lieu désert.

They went by themselves in a boat to a desert.

33 B eaucoup de gens les virent s'en aller et les reconnurent, et de toutes les villes on accourut à pied et on les devança au lieu où ils se rendaient.

Many people saw them leave and knew who they were. People ran fast from all the cities and got there first.

34 Q uand il sortit de la barque, Jésus vit une grande foule, et fut ému de compassion pour eux, parce qu'ils étaient comme des brebis qui n'ont point de berger; et il se mit à leur enseigner beaucoup de choses.

When Jesus got out of the boat, He saw many people gathered together. He had loving-pity for them. They were like sheep without a shepherd. He began to teach them many things.

35 C omme l'heure était déjà avancée, ses disciples s'approchèrent de lui, et dirent: Ce lieu est désert, et l'heure est déjà avancée;

The day was almost gone. The followers of Jesus came to Him. They said, “This is a desert. It is getting late.

36 r envoie-les, afin qu'ils aillent dans les campagnes et dans les villages des environs, pour s'acheter de quoi manger.

Tell the people to go to the towns and villages and buy food for themselves.”

37 J ésus leur répondit: Donnez-leur vous-mêmes à manger. Mais ils lui dirent: Irions-nous acheter des pains pour deux cents deniers, et leur donnerions-nous à manger?

He said to them, “Give them something to eat.” They said to Him, “Are we to go and buy many loaves of bread and give it to them?”

38 E t il leur dit: Combien avez-vous de pains? Allez voir. Ils s'en assurèrent, et répondirent: Cinq, et deux poissons.

He said to them, “How many loaves of bread do you have here? Go and see.” When they knew, they said, “Five loaves of bread and two fish.”

39 A lors il leur commanda de les faire tous asseoir par groupes sur l'herbe verte,

Then He told them to have all the people sit down together in groups on the green grass.

40 e t ils s'assirent par rangées de cent et de cinquante.

They sat down in groups of fifty people and in groups of one hundred people.

41 I l prit les cinq pains et les deux poissons et, levant les yeux vers le ciel, il rendit grâces. Puis, il rompit les pains, et les donna aux disciples, afin qu'ils les distribuassent à la foule. Il partagea aussi les deux poissons entre tous.

Jesus took the five loaves of bread and two fish. He looked up to heaven and gave thanks. He broke the loaves in pieces and gave them to the followers to set before the people. He divided the two fish among them all.

42 T ous mangèrent et furent rassasiés,

They all ate and were filled.

43 e t l'on emporta douze paniers pleins de morceaux de pain et de ce qui restait des poissons.

After that the followers picked up twelve baskets full of pieces of bread and fish.

44 C eux qui avaient mangé les pains étaient cinq mille hommes.

About five thousand men ate the bread. Jesus Walks On The Water

45 A ussitôt après, il obligea ses disciples à monter dans la barque et à passer avant lui de l'autre côté, vers Bethsaïda, pendant que lui-même renverrait la foule.

At once Jesus had His followers get into the boat and go ahead of Him to the other side to the town of Bethsaida. He sent the people away.

46 Q uand il l'eut renvoyée, il s'en alla sur la montagne, pour prier.

When they were all gone, He went up to the mountain to pray.

47 L e soir étant venu, la barque était au milieu de la mer, et Jésus était seul à terre.

It was evening. The boat was half-way across the sea. Jesus was alone on the land.

48 I l vit qu'ils avaient beaucoup de peine à ramer; car le vent leur était contraire. A la quatrième veille de la nuit environ, il alla vers eux, marchant sur la mer, et il voulait les dépasser.

He saw His followers were in trouble. The wind was against them. They were working very hard rowing the boat. About three o’clock in the morning Jesus came to them walking on the sea. He would have gone past them.

49 Q uand ils le virent marcher sur la mer, ils crurent que c'étaient un fantôme, et ils poussèrent des cris;

When the followers saw Him walking on the water, they thought it was a spirit and cried out with fear.

50 c ar ils le voyaient tous, et ils étaient troublés. Aussitôt Jésus leur parla, et leur dit: Rassurez-vous, c'est moi, n'ayez pas peur!

For they all saw Him and were afraid. At once Jesus talked to them. He said, “Take hope. It is I, do not be afraid.”

51 P uis il monta vers eux dans la barque, et le vent cessa. Ils furent en eux-même tout stupéfaits et remplis d'étonnement;

He came over to them and got into the boat. The wind stopped. They were very much surprised and wondered about it.

52 c ar ils n'avaient pas compris le miracle des pains, parce que leur coeur était endurci.

They had not learned what they should have learned from the loaves because their hearts were hard. People Are Healed at Gennesaret

53 A près avoir traversé la mer, ils vinrent dans le pays de Génésareth, et ils abordèrent.

Then they crossed the sea and came to the land of Gennesaret and went to shore.

54 Q uand ils furent sortis de la barque, les gens, ayant aussitôt reconnu Jésus,

When Jesus got out of the boat, the people knew Him at once.

55 p arcoururent tous les environs, et l'on se mit à apporter les malades sur des lits, partout où l'on apprenait qu'il était.

They ran through all the country bringing people who were sick on their beds to Jesus.

56 E n quelque lieu qu'il arrivât, dans les villages, dans les villes ou dans les campagnes, on mettait les malades sur les places publiques, et on le priait de leur permettre seulement de toucher le bord de son vêtement. Et tous ceux qui le touchaient étaient guéris.

Wherever He went, they would lay the sick people in the streets in the center of town where people gather. They begged Him that they might touch the bottom of His coat. Everyone who did was healed. This happened in the towns and in the cities and in the country where He went.
