Hear this word, O people of Israel, this song of sorrow which I sing for you:

2 E lle est tombée, elle ne se relèvera plus, La vierge d'Israël; Elle est couchée par terre, Nul ne la relève.

“The young pure woman Israel has fallen, and she will not rise again. She is left alone on her land. There is no one to raise her up.”

3 C ar ainsi parle le Seigneur, l'Éternel: La ville qui mettait en campagne mille hommes N'en conservera que cent, Et celle qui mettait en campagne cent hommes N'en conservera que dix, pour la maison d'Israël.

For the Lord God says, “The city of Israel that sends out a thousand soldiers will have a hundred left. And the one that sends out a hundred will have ten left.”

4 C ar ainsi parle l'Éternel à la maison d'Israël: Cherchez-moi, et vous vivrez!

The Lord says to the people of Israel, “Look for Me and live.

5 N e cherchez pas Béthel, N'allez pas à Guilgal, Ne passez pas à Beer Schéba. Car Guilgal sera captif, Et Béthel anéanti.

But do not look for Bethel. Do not go to Gilgal or cross over to Beersheba. For the people of Gilgal will be taken away to a strange land, and Bethel will come to nothing.”

6 C herchez l'Éternel, et vous vivrez! Craignez qu'il ne saisisse comme un feu la maison de Joseph, Et que ce feu ne la dévore, sans personne à Béthel pour l'éteindre,

Look for the Lord and live, or He will break out like fire in the family of Joseph. It will destroy, and no one in Bethel will be able to stop it.

7 O vous qui changez le droit en absinthe, Et qui foulez à terre la justice!

You turn what is right into something bitter. You throw what is right and good down to the earth.

8 I l a créé les Pléiades et l'Orion, Il change les ténèbres en aurore, Il obscurcit le jour pour en faire la nuit, Il appelle les eaux de la mer, Et les répand à la surface de la terre: L'Éternel est son nom.

The Lord made the stars of Pleiades and Orion. He changes darkness into morning, and turns day into night. He calls for the waters of the sea and pours them out on the earth. The Lord is His name.

9 I l fait lever la ruine sur les puissants, Et la ruine vient sur les forteresses.

He destroys the strong, so that the strong city is laid waste.

10 I ls haïssent celui qui les reprend à la porte, Et ils ont en horreur celui qui parle sincèrement.

They hate him who speaks strong words in the gate. They hate him who speaks the truth.

11 A ussi, parce que vous avez foulé le misérable, Et que vous avez pris de lui du blé en présent, Vous avez bâti des maisons en pierres de taille, Mais vous ne les habiterez pas; Vous avez planté d'excellentes vignes, Mais vous n'en boirez pas le vin.

You crush the poor under foot and make them pay taxes with their grain. Because of this, even though you have built houses of cut stone, you will not live in them and even though you have planted beautiful grape-fields, you will not drink their wine.

12 C ar, je le sais, vos crimes sont nombreux, Vos péchés se sont multipliés; Vous opprimez le juste, vous recevez des présents, Et vous violez à la porte le droit des pauvres.

For I know that you have done much wrong and your sins are many. You make trouble for those who are right and good, and you take pay in secret for wrong-doing. You will not be fair to the poor.

13 V oilà pourquoi, en des temps comme ceux-ci, le sage se tait; Car ces temps sont mauvais.

The wise man keeps quiet at such a time, for it is a sinful time.

14 R echerchez le bien et non le mal, afin que vous viviez, Et qu'ainsi l'Éternel, le Dieu des armées, soit avec vous, Comme vous le dites.

Look for good and not sin, that you may live. Then the Lord God of All will be with you, just as you have said.

15 H aïssez le mal et aimez le bien, Faites régner à la porte la justice; Et peut-être l'Éternel, le Dieu des armées, aura pitié Des restes de Joseph.

Hate sin, and love good. And let what is fair be done at the gate. It may be that the Lord God of All will show kindness to those left of Joseph. The Day of the Lord

16 C 'est pourquoi ainsi parle l'Éternel, le Dieu des armées, le Seigneur; Dans toutes les places on se lamentera, Dans toutes les rues on dira: Hélas! hélas! On appellera le laboureur au deuil, Et aux lamentations ceux qui disent des complaintes.

So the Lord, the Lord God of All, says, “There is a loud crying in the city. In all the streets they say, ‘It is bad! It is bad!’ They call the farmers to cry in sorrow. They call those whose work is to cry over the dead to sing songs of sorrow.

17 D ans toutes les vignes on se lamentera, Lorsque je passerai au milieu de toi, dit l'Éternel.

And there are cries of sorrow in all the grape-fields, because I will pass among you,” says the Lord.

18 M alheur à ceux qui désirent le jour de l'Éternel! Qu'attendez-vous du jour de l'Éternel? Il sera ténèbres et non lumière.

It is bad for you who want the day of the Lord to come. For what will the day of the Lord be to you? It will be darkness and not light.

19 V ous serez comme un homme qui fuit devant un lion Et que rencontre un ours, Qui gagne sa demeure, appuie sa main sur la muraille, Et que mord un serpent.

It will be as when a man runs away from a lion and is met by a bear. It will be as when a man goes home and rests with his hand against the wall, and gets bitten by a snake.

20 L e jour de l'Éternel n'est-il pas ténèbres et non lumière? N'est-il pas obscur et sans éclat?

Will not the day of the Lord be darkness instead of light, very dark with nothing bright in it?

21 J e hais, je méprise vos fêtes, Je ne puis sentir vos assemblées.

“I hate your special suppers. I will have nothing to do with them. And I am not pleased with your religious meetings.

22 Q uand vous me présentez des holocaustes et des offrandes, Je n'y prends aucun plaisir; Et les veaux engraissés que vous sacrifiez en actions de grâces, Je ne les regarde pas.

Even if you give Me burnt gifts and grain gifts in worship, I will not receive them. I will not even look at the peace gifts of your fat animals.

23 É loigne de moi le bruit de tes cantiques; Je n'écoute pas le son de tes luths.

Take the noise of your songs away from Me. I will not listen to the sound of your harps.

24 M ais que la droiture soit comme un courant d'eau, Et la justice comme un torrent qui jamais ne tarit.

But let what is fair roll down like waters. Let what is right and good flow forever like a river.

25 M 'avez-vous fait des sacrifices et des offrandes Pendant les quarante années du désert, maison d'Israël?...
