1 L 'Éternel répondit à Job du milieu de la tempête et dit:

Then the Lord answered Job out of the strong wind and said,

2 Q ui est celui qui obscurcit mes desseins Par des discours sans intelligence?

“Who is this that makes words of wisdom dark by speaking without much learning?

3 C eins tes reins comme un vaillant homme; Je t'interrogerai, et tu m'instruiras.

Now get ready like a man, and I will ask you some questions and you answer Me.

4 O ù étais-tu quand je fondais la terre? Dis-le, si tu as de l'intelligence.

Where were you when I began building the earth? Tell Me, if you have understanding.

5 Q ui en a fixé les dimensions, le sais-tu? Ou qui a étendu sur elle le cordeau?

Who decided how big it was to be, since you know? Who looked to see if it was as big as it should be?

6 S ur quoi ses bases sont-elles appuyées? Ou qui en a posé la pierre angulaire,

What was it built upon? Who laid its first stone,

7 A lors que les étoiles du matin éclataient en chants d'allégresse, Et que tous les fils de Dieu poussaient des cris de joie?

when the morning stars sang together and all the sons of God called out for joy?

8 Q ui a fermé la mer avec des portes, Quand elle s'élança du sein maternel;

“Who shut up the sea with doors, when it rushed out from its secret place?

9 Q uand je fis de la nuée son vêtement, Et de l'obscurité ses langes;

I made clouds its clothing, and put much darkness around it.

10 Q uand je lui imposai ma loi, Et que je lui mis des barrières et des portes;

I marked the places where it could not pass, and set locks and doors.

11 Q uand je dis: Tu viendras jusqu'ici, tu n'iras pas au delà; Ici s'arrêtera l'orgueil de tes flots?

And I said, ‘You will come this far, and no farther. Here will your proud waves stop.’

12 D epuis que tu existes, as-tu commandé au matin? As-tu montré sa place à l'aurore,

“Have you ever in your life told the morning when to come, and caused the first light of day to know its place,

13 P our qu'elle saisisse les extrémités de la terre, Et que les méchants en soient secoués;

that it might take hold of the ends of the earth, and the sinful be shaken out of it?

14 P our que la terre se transforme comme l'argile qui reçoit une empreinte, Et qu'elle soit parée comme d'un vêtement;

It is changed like clay when an object is pushed down to mark it, and they stand out like clothing.

15 P our que les méchants soient privés de leur lumière, Et que le bras qui se lève soit brisé?

The light of the sinful is held back, and the arm lifted up is broken.

16 A s-tu pénétré jusqu'aux sources de la mer? T'es-tu promené dans les profondeurs de l'abîme?

“Have you gone into the wells of the sea? Have you walked on the bottom of the deep sea?

17 L es portes de la mort t'ont-elles été ouvertes? As-tu vu les portes de l'ombre de la mort?

Have the gates of death been shown to you? Or have you seen the gates of the deep darkness?

18 A s-tu embrassé du regard l'étendue de la terre? Parle, si tu sais toutes ces choses.

Have you understood how great the earth is? Tell Me, if you know all this.

19 O ù est le chemin qui conduit au séjour de la lumière? Et les ténèbres, où ont-elles leur demeure?

“Where does the light come from? And where is the place of darkness,

20 P eux-tu les saisir à leur limite, Et connaître les sentiers de leur habitation?

that you may take it to its land, and know the paths to its home?

21 T u le sais, car alors tu étais né, Et le nombre de tes jours est grand!

You know, for you were born then. You are very old!

22 E s-tu parvenu jusqu'aux amas de neige? As-tu vu les dépôts de grêle,

Have you gone into the store-houses of the snow? Have you seen the store-houses of the hail,

23 Q ue je tiens en réserve pour les temps de détresse, Pour les jours de guerre et de bataille?

which I have kept for the time of trouble, for the day of war and battle?

24 P ar quel chemin la lumière se divise-t-elle, Et le vent d'orient se répand-il sur la terre?

What is the way to the place where the light is divided, or the east wind spread over the earth?

25 Q ui a ouvert un passage à la pluie, Et tracé la route de l'éclair et du tonnerre,

“Who has cut open a way for the flood, and a path for the thunderstorm?

26 P our que la pluie tombe sur une terre sans habitants, Sur un désert où il n'y a point d'hommes;

Who brings rain on the land without people, on a desert without a man in it,

27 P our qu'elle abreuve les lieux solitaires et arides, Et qu'elle fasse germer et sortir l'herbe?

to fill the need of the wasted land, and to make the grass grow?

28 L a pluie a-t-elle un père? Qui fait naître les gouttes de la rosée?

Does the rain have a father? Who has given birth to the drops of rain?

29 D u sein de qui sort la glace, Et qui enfante le frimas du ciel,

Who gave birth to ice? And who gave birth to the snow water of heaven?

30 P our que les eaux se cachent comme une pierre, Et que la surface de l'abîme soit enchaînée?

Water becomes hard like stone, and the top of the sea is covered with ice.

31 N oues-tu les liens des Pléiades, Ou détaches-tu les cordages de l'Orion?

“Can you tie the chains of the stars of Pleiades, or loose the ropes of Orion?

32 F ais-tu paraître en leur temps les signes du zodiaque, Et conduis-tu la Grande Ourse avec ses petits?

Can you lead the groups of stars out at the right times? Can you lead the stars of the Bear with her young?

33 C onnais-tu les lois du ciel? Règles-tu son pouvoir sur la terre?

Do you know the laws of the heavens? Can you make them to rule over the earth?

34 É lèves-tu la voix jusqu'aux nuées, Pour appeler à toi des torrents d'eaux?

“Can you lift up your voice to the clouds, that a flood of water may cover you?

35 L ances-tu les éclairs? Partent-ils? Te disent-ils: Nous voici?

Can you send out lightnings, that they may go and say to you, ‘Here we are’?

36 Q ui a mis la sagesse dans le coeur, Ou qui a donné l'intelligence à l'esprit?

Who has given wisdom to the heart? Who has given understanding to the mind?

37 Q ui peut avec sagesse compter les nuages, Et verser les outres des cieux,

Who can number the clouds by wisdom? Or who can push over the water jars of the heavens,

38 P our que la poussière se mette à ruisseler, Et que les mottes de terre se collent ensemble?

when the dust gathers together and becomes hard?

39 ( 39: 1) Chasses-tu la proie pour la lionne, Et apaises-tu la faim des lionceaux,

“Can you hunt food for the lion? Can you fill the hunger of the young lions,

40 ( 39: 2) Quand ils sont couchés dans leur tanière, Quand ils sont en embuscade dans leur repaire?

when they lie in their own place in the rock, or wait in their hiding place?

41 ( 39: 3) Qui prépare au corbeau sa pâture, Quand ses petits crient vers Dieu, Quand ils sont errants et affamés?

Who gets the food ready for the raven, when its young cry to God and go about without food?
