1 B oaz monta à la porte, et s'y arrêta. Or voici, celui qui avait droit de rachat, et dont Boaz avait parlé, vint à passer. Boaz lui dit: Approche, reste ici, toi un tel. Et il s'approcha, et s'arrêta.

Boaz went up to the gate and sat down there. He saw the in-law of the family that he had spoken about pass by. So Boaz said, “Come here, friend, and sit down.” So the man came and sat down.

2 B oaz prit alors dix hommes parmi les anciens de la ville, et il dit: Asseyez-vous ici. Et ils s'assirent.

And Boaz took ten of the leaders of the city and said, “Sit down here.” So they sat down.

3 P uis il dit à celui qui avait le droit de rachat: Naomi, revenue du pays de Moab, a vendu la pièce de terre qui appartenait à notre frère Élimélec.

Then Boaz said to the close in-law, “Naomi has returned from the land of Moab. She is selling the piece of land which belonged to our brother Elimelech.

4 J 'ai cru devoir t'en informer, et te dire: Acquiers-la, en présence des habitants et en présence des anciens de mon peuple. Si tu veux racheter, rachète; mais si tu ne veux pas, déclare-le-moi, afin que je le sache. Car il n'y a personne avant toi qui ait le droit de rachat, et je l'ai après toi. Et il répondit: je rachèterai.

I thought I should let you know about it. Buy it in front of those who are sitting here, and in front of the leaders of my people. If you will buy it, then buy it. But if not, tell me you do not want to buy it, so I may know. For you have the right to be the first one to buy it. And I am after you.” The man said, “I will buy it.”

5 B oaz dit: Le jour où tu acquerras le champ de la main de Naomi, tu l'acquerras en même temps de Ruth la Moabite, femme du défunt, pour relever le nom du défunt dans son héritage.

Then Boaz said, “The day you buy the field from Naomi, you must take Ruth, the Moabite woman, also. She is the wife of the dead man. You must keep alive the name of the dead man on his land.”

6 E t celui qui avait le droit de rachat répondit: Je ne puis pas racheter pour mon compte, crainte de détruire mon héritage; prends pour toi mon droit de rachat, car je ne puis pas racheter.

Then the close in-law said, “I cannot buy it for myself because it might be that my own children would not be able to own my land later. Take it for yourself. I give you my right to buy it, for I cannot buy it.”

7 A utrefois en Israël, pour valider une affaire quelconque relative à un rachat ou à un échange, l'un ôtait son soulier et le donnait à l'autre: cela servait de témoignage en Israël.

This is what was done before in Israel to show that the buying or trading of land was decided upon. A man would take off his shoe and give it to another. This would make sure what was decided.

8 C elui qui avait le droit de rachat dit donc à Boaz: Acquiers pour ton compte! Et il ôta son soulier.

So he said to Boaz, “Buy it for yourself.” And he took off his shoe.

9 A lors Boaz dit aux anciens et à tout le peuple: Vous êtes témoins aujourd'hui que j'ai acquis de la main de Naomi tout ce qui appartenait à Élimélec, à Kiljon et à Machlon,

Then Boaz said to the leaders and all the people, “You have seen today that I have bought from Naomi all that belonged to Elimelech, to Chilion and to Mahlon.

10 e t que je me suis également acquis pour femme Ruth la Moabite, femme de Machlon, pour relever le nom du défunt dans son héritage, et afin que le nom du défunt ne soit point retranché d'entre ses frères et de la porte de son lieu. Vous en êtes témoins aujourd'hui!

And I have taken Ruth, the Moabite woman who was Mahlon’s wife, to be my wife. I will keep alive the name of the dead man on his land. His name will not be forgotten among his brothers or from the gate of his birth-place. You have heard this today.”

11 T out le peuple qui était à la porte et les anciens dirent: Nous en sommes témoins! Que l'Éternel rende la femme qui entre dans ta maison semblable à Rachel et à Léa, qui toutes les deux ont bâti la maison d'Israël! Manifeste ta force dans Éphrata, et fais-toi un nom dans Bethléhem!

All the people in the gate and the leaders said, “We have heard it. May the Lord make the woman who is coming into your home like Rachel and Leah, who together built the house of Israel. May you become rich in Ephrathah and be known by all in Bethlehem.

12 P uisse la postérité que l'Éternel te donnera par cette jeune femme rendre ta maison semblable à la maison de Pérets, qui fut enfanté à Juda par Tamar!

13 B oaz prit Ruth, qui devint sa femme, et il alla vers elle. L'Éternel permit à Ruth de concevoir, et elle enfanta un fils.

So Boaz took Ruth. She became his wife, and he went in to her. The Lord made it possible for her to have a child and she gave birth to a son.

14 L es femmes dirent à Naomi: Béni soit l'Éternel, qui ne t'a point laissé manquer aujourd'hui d'un homme ayant droit de rachat, et dont le nom sera célébré en Israël!

The women said to Naomi, “Thanks be to the Lord. He has not left you without a family this day. May his name become known in all of Israel.

15 C et enfant restaurera ton âme, et sera le soutien de ta vieillesse; car ta belle-fille, qui t'aime, l'a enfanté, elle qui vaut mieux pour toi que sept fils.

May he bring you new life and strength while you are old. For your daughter-in-law who loves you, who is better to you than seven sons, has given birth to him.”

16 N aomi prit l'enfant et le mit sur son sein, et elle fut sa garde.

Then Naomi took the child and held him, and became his nurse.

17 L es voisines lui donnèrent un nom, en disant: Un fils est né à Naomi! Et elles l'appelèrent Obed. Ce fut le père d'Isaï père de David.

The neighbor women gave him a name. They said, “A son has been born to Naomi!” And they called him Obed. He is the father of Jesse, the father of David.

18 V oici la postérité de Pérets.

Now these are the children of Perez. Perez was the father of Hezron.

19 P érets engendra Hetsron; Hetsron engendra Ram; Ram engendra Amminadab;

Hezron was the father of Ram. Ram was the father of Amminadab.

20 A mminadab engendra Nachschon; Nachschon engendra Salmon;

Amminadab was the father of Nahshon. Nahshon was the father of Salmon.

21 S almon engendra Boaz; Boaz engendra Obed;

Salmon was the father of Boaz. Boaz was the father of Obed.

22 O bed engendra Isaï; et Isaï engendra David.

Obed was the father of Jesse. And Jesse was the father of David.
