O Lord, the God Who punishes, God Who punishes, let Your light shine!

2 L ève-toi, juge de la terre! Rends aux superbes selon leurs oeuvres!

Rise up, You Judge of the earth. Pay what is owed to the proud.

3 J usques à quand les méchants, ô Éternel! Jusques à quand les méchants triompheront-ils?

How long will the sinful, O Lord, how long will the sinful be full of joy?

4 I ls discourent, ils parlent avec arrogance; Tous ceux qui font le mal se glorifient.

They pour out proud words. All those who do wrong, talk about themselves as if they are great people.

5 É ternel! ils écrasent ton peuple, Ils oppriment ton héritage;

They crush Your people, O Lord. They bring trouble upon Your chosen nation.

6 I ls égorgent la veuve et l'étranger, Ils assassinent les orphelins.

They kill the woman whose husband has died and the stranger. They kill the children who have no parents.

7 E t ils disent: L'Éternel ne regarde pas, Le Dieu de Jacob ne fait pas attention!

And they say, “The Lord does not see. The God of Jacob does not care.”

8 P renez-y garde, hommes stupides! Insensés, quand serez-vous sages?

Listen, you foolish ones among the people. You fools, when will you understand?

9 C elui qui a planté l'oreille n'entendrait-il pas? Celui qui a formé l'oeil ne verrait-il pas?

He Who made the ear, does He not hear? He Who made the eye, does He not see?

10 C elui qui châtie les nations ne punirait-il point, Lui qui donne à l'homme l'intelligence?

He Who punishes nations so they might give up sin, will He not speak strong words to them? Is He not the One Who teaches man all he knows?

11 L 'Éternel connaît les pensées de l'homme, Il sait qu'elles sont vaines.

The Lord knows the thoughts of man. He knows that they are empty.

12 H eureux l'homme que tu châties, ô Éternel! Et que tu instruis par ta loi,

Happy is the man who is punished until he gives up sin, O Lord, and whom You teach from Your Law.

13 P our le calmer aux jours du malheur, Jusqu'à ce que la fosse soit creusée pour le méchant!

You give him rest from days of trouble, until a hole is dug for the sinful.

14 C ar l'Éternel ne délaisse pas son peuple, Il n'abandonne pas son héritage;

For the Lord will not turn away from His people. He will not leave His chosen nation.

15 C ar le jugement sera conforme à la justice, Et tous ceux dont le coeur est droit l'approuveront.

For what is decided will be right and good. And all those whose hearts are right will follow it.

16 Q ui se lèvera pour moi contre les méchants? Qui me soutiendra contre ceux qui font le mal?

Who will rise up for me against the sinful? Who will take a stand for me against those who do wrong?

17 S i l'Éternel n'était pas mon secours, Mon âme serait bien vite dans la demeure du silence.

If the Lord had not been my help, my soul would soon have been among the dead.

18 Q uand je dis: Mon pied chancelle! Ta bonté, ô Éternel! me sert d'appui.

When I said, “My foot is going out from under me,” Your loving-kindness held me up, O Lord.

19 Q uand les pensées s'agitent en foule au dedans de moi, Tes consolations réjouissent mon âme.

When my worry is great within me, Your comfort brings joy to my soul.

20 L es méchants te feraient-ils siéger sur leur trône, Eux qui forment des desseins iniques en dépit de la loi?

Can a sinful throne that brings trouble by its laws be a friend to You?

21 I ls se rassemblent contre la vie du juste, Et ils condamnent le sang innocent.

They join together against the life of those who are right and good. They send those who are not guilty to their death.

22 M ais l'Éternel est ma retraite, Mon Dieu est le rocher de mon refuge.

But the Lord has been my strong place, my God, and the rock where I am safe.

23 I l fera retomber sur eux leur iniquité, Il les anéantira par leur méchanceté; L'Éternel, notre Dieu, les anéantira.

He has brought back their own sin upon them and will destroy them for their wrong-doing. The Lord our God will destroy them.
