1 T ous les enfants d'Israël sortirent, depuis Dan jusqu'à Beer Schéba et au pays de Galaad, et l'assemblée se réunit comme un seul homme devant l'Éternel, à Mitspa.

Then all the people of Israel from Dan to Beersheba and from the land of Gilead came out. The people gathered together as one man to the Lord at Mizpah.

2 L es chefs de tout le peuple, toutes les tribus d'Israël, se présentèrent dans l'assemblée du peuple de Dieu: quatre cent mille hommes de pied, tirant l'épée.

The leaders of all the people, all the families of Israel, showed themselves in the meeting of the people of God. There were 400, 000 soldiers on foot who used the sword.

3 E t les fils de Benjamin apprirent que les enfants d'Israël étaient montés à Mitspa. Les enfants d'Israël dirent: Parlez, comment ce crime a-t-il été commis?

(The people of Benjamin heard that the people of Israel had gone up to Mizpah.) The people of Israel said, “Tell us. How did this sinful thing happen?”

4 A lors le Lévite, le mari de la femme qui avait été tuée, prit la parole, et dit: J'étais arrivé, avec ma concubine, à Guibea de Benjamin, pour y passer la nuit.

The Levite, the husband of the woman who was killed, answered, “I came with my woman to stay the night at Gibeah, a city of Benjamin.

5 L es habitants de Guibea se sont soulevés contre moi, et ont entouré pendant la nuit la maison où j'étais. Ils avaient l'intention de me tuer, et ils ont fait violence à ma concubine, et elle est morte.

But the men of Gibeah came against me. They gathered around the house at night because of me. They wanted to kill me. But they did sex with my woman instead, so she died.

6 J 'ai saisi ma concubine, et je l'ai coupée en morceaux, que j'ai envoyés dans tout le territoire de l'héritage d'Israël; car ils ont commis un crime et une infamie en Israël.

I took my woman and cut her into pieces. I sent her out through all the land that was given to Israel. For they have done a sinful act of shame in Israel.

7 V ous voici tous, enfants d'Israël; consultez-vous, et prenez ici une décision!

All you people of Israel, say what should be done.”

8 T out le peuple se leva comme un seul homme, en disant: Nul de nous n'ira dans sa tente, et personne ne retournera dans sa maison.

All the people stood up as one man, saying, “Not one of us will go to his tent. Not one of us will return to his house.

9 V oici maintenant ce que nous ferons à Guibea: Nous marcherons contre elle d'après le sort.

But this is what we will do to Gibeah. We will go against it by drawing names.

10 N ous prendrons dans toutes les tribus d'Israël dix hommes sur cent, cent sur mille, et mille sur dix mille; ils iront chercher des vivres pour le peuple, afin qu'à leur retour on traite Guibea de Benjamin selon toute l'infamie qu'elle a commise en Israël.

We will take ten men of every 100 among the families of Israel, and 100 of every 1, 000, and 1, 000 of every 10, 000. They will take food for the people. So when they come to Gibeah of Benjamin, they may punish them for all the acts of shame they have done in Israel.”

11 A insi tous les hommes d'Israël s'assemblèrent contre la ville, unis comme un seul homme.

All the men of Israel were gathered against the city, together as one man.

12 L es tribus d'Israël envoyèrent des hommes vers toutes les familles de Benjamin, pour dire: Qu'est-ce que ce crime qui s'est commis parmi vous?

The family groups of Israel sent men through the whole family group of Benjamin, saying, “What is this sin that has happened among you?

13 L ivrez maintenant les gens pervers qui sont à Guibea, afin que nous les fassions mourir et que nous ôtions le mal du milieu d'Israël. Mais les Benjamites ne voulurent point écouter la voix de leurs frères, les enfants d'Israël.

Now give us the sinful men of Gibeah. Then we will put them to death and take this sin away from Israel.” But the people of Benjamin would not listen to the voice of their brothers, the people of Israel.

14 L es Benjamites sortirent de leurs villes, et s'assemblèrent à Guibea, pour combattre les enfants d'Israël.

The people of Benjamin gathered from the cities to Gibeah. They came to go out to battle against the people of Israel.

15 L e dénombrement que l'on fit en ce jour des Benjamites sortis des villes fut de vingt-six mille hommes, tirant l'épée, sans compter les habitants de Guibea formant sept cents hommes d'élite.

Out of the sons of Benjamin, there were 26, 000 men who used the sword who came from the cities on that day. And there were 700 chosen men who lived in Gibeah.

16 P armi tout ce peuple, il y avait sept cents hommes d'élite qui ne se servaient pas de la main droite; tous ceux-là pouvaient, en lançant une pierre avec la fronde, viser à un cheveu sans le manquer.

There were 700 chosen men of all these people who were left-handed. Each one could use a sling to throw a stone at a hair and not miss.

17 O n fit aussi le dénombrement des hommes d'Israël, non compris ceux de Benjamin, et l'on en trouva quatre cent mille tirant l'épée, tous gens de guerre.

Apart from Benjamin, there were 400, 000 men of Israel who used the sword. All of them were men of war.

18 E t les enfants d'Israël se levèrent, montèrent à Béthel, et consultèrent Dieu, en disant: Qui de nous montera le premier pour combattre les fils de Benjamin? l'Éternel répondit: Juda montera le premier.

The people of Israel went up to Bethel. There they asked God, “Who should go first for us to fight against the people of Benjamin?” The Lord said, “Judah should go first.”

19 D ès le matin, les enfants d'Israël se mirent en marche, et ils campèrent près de Guibea.

So the people of Israel got up in the morning and went to get ready to fight against Gibeah.

20 E t les hommes d'Israël s'avancèrent pour combattre ceux de Benjamin, et ils se rangèrent en bataille contre eux devant Guibea.

The men of Israel went to fight against Benjamin. They dressed themselves for battle against them at Gibeah.

21 L es fils de Benjamin sortirent de Guibea, et ils étendirent sur le sol ce jour-là vingt-deux mille hommes d'Israël.

The people of Benjamin came out of Gibeah and killed 22, 000 men of Israel on that day.

22 L e peuple, les hommes d'Israël reprirent courage, et ils se rangèrent de nouveau en bataille dans le lieu où ils s'étaient placés le premier jour.

But the men of Israel made their hearts strong. They got ready for battle again in the same place they had fought the first day.

23 E t les enfants d'Israël montèrent, et ils pleurèrent devant l'Éternel jusqu'au soir; ils consultèrent l'Éternel, en disant: Dois-je m'avancer encore pour combattre les fils de Benjamin, mon frère? L'Éternel répondit: Montez contre lui.

The people of Israel went up and cried before the Lord until evening. They asked the Lord, “Should we go again in battle against our brothers the people of Benjamin?” And the Lord said, “Go fight against them.”

24 L es enfants d'Israël s'avancèrent contre les fils de Benjamin, le second jour.

So the sons of Israel came to fight against the sons of Benjamin the second day.

25 E t ce même jour, les Benjamites sortirent de Guibea à leur rencontre, et ils étendirent encore sur le sol dix-huit mille hommes des enfants d'Israël, tous tirant l'épée.

Benjamin went out against them from Gibeah the second day. And they killed 18, 000 men of Israel who used the sword.

26 T ous les enfants d'Israël et tout le peuple montèrent et vinrent à Béthel; ils pleurèrent et restèrent là devant l'Éternel, ils jeûnèrent en ce jour jusqu'au soir, et ils offrirent des holocaustes et des sacrifices d'actions de grâces devant l'Éternel.

Then all the people of Israel went up to Bethel and cried. They stayed that day before the Lord and would not eat until evening. They gave burnt gifts and peace gifts to the Lord.

27 E t les enfants d'Israël consultèrent l'Éternel, -c'était là que se trouvait alors l'arche de l'alliance de Dieu,

The people of Israel asked the Lord what to do. (For the special box with the Law of God was there in those days.

28 e t c'était Phinées, fils d'Éléazar, fils d'Aaron, qui se tenait à cette époque en présence de Dieu, -et ils dirent: Dois-je marcher encore pour combattre les fils de Benjamin, mon frère, ou dois-je m'en abstenir? L'Éternel répondit: Montez, car demain je les livrerai entre vos mains.

Phinehas the son of Eleazar, Aaron’s son, served in front of it those days.) The people said, “Should we go again in battle against our brothers the people of Benjamin? Or should we stop?” The Lord said, “Go fight against them. For tomorrow I will give them into your hand.”

29 A lors Israël plaça une embuscade autour de Guibea.

So Israel sent men to hide around Gibeah.

30 L es enfants d'Israël montèrent contre les fils de Benjamin, le troisième jour, et ils se rangèrent en bataille devant Guibea, comme les autres fois.

The sons of Israel went to fight against the sons of Benjamin on the third day. They dressed themselves for battle against Gibeah as they had done before.

31 E t les fils de Benjamin sortirent à la rencontre du peuple, et ils se laissèrent attirer loin de la ville. Ils commencèrent à frapper à mort parmi le peuple comme les autres fois, sur les routes dont l'une monte à Béthel et l'autre à Guibea par la campagne, et ils tuèrent environ trente hommes d'Israël.

The sons of Benjamin went out to fight the people and were taken away from the city. They began to fight and kill some of the people as they had done before. They killed about thirty men of Israel in the open country and on the roads. One road went up to Bethel and the other to Gibeah.

32 L es fils de Benjamin disaient: Les voilà battus devant nous comme auparavant! Mais les enfants d'Israël disaient: Fuyons, et attirons-les loin de la ville dans les chemins.

The sons of Benjamin said, “They are being killed in front of us as they were the first day.” But the sons of Israel said, “Let us run away so we can get them away from the city and to the roads.”

33 T ous les hommes d'Israël quittèrent leur position, et se rangèrent à Baal Thamar; et l'embuscade d'Israël s'élança du lieu où elle était, de Maaré Guibea.

Then all the men of Israel left their place and went to fight at Baal-tamar. And the men of Israel who were hiding rushed out of their place in the plain of Geba.

34 D ix mille hommes choisis sur tout Israël arrivèrent devant Guibea. Le combat fut rude, et les Benjamites ne se doutaient pas du désastre qu'ils allaient éprouver.

When 10, 000 chosen men of Israel came against Gibeah, the battle was hard. But the people of Benjamin did not know that such danger was so close to them.

35 L 'Éternel battit Benjamin devant Israël, et les enfants d'Israël tuèrent ce jour-là vingt-cinq mille et cent hommes de Benjamin, tous tirant l'épée.

The Lord destroyed Benjamin in front of Israel. The sons of Israel destroyed 25, 100 men of Benjamin that day. All these were men who used the sword.

36 L es fils de Benjamin regardaient comme battus les hommes d'Israël, qui cédaient du terrain à Benjamin et se reposaient sur l'embuscade qu'ils avaient placée contre Guibea.

So the people of Benjamin saw that they had lost the battle. The men of Israel ran from Benjamin because they trusted in the men who were hiding and waiting to take Gibeah.

37 L es gens en embuscade se jetèrent promptement sur Guibea, ils se portèrent en avant et frappèrent toute la ville du tranchant de l'épée.

The men who had been hiding were quick to rush against Gibeah. They destroyed all of the city with the sword.

38 S uivant un signal convenu avec les hommes d'Israël, ceux de l'embuscade devaient faire monter de la ville une épaisse fumée.

The men of Israel had agreed that the men who had been hiding should make a big cloud of smoke rise from the city. It would be something special for them to see.

39 L es hommes d'Israël firent alors volte-face dans la bataille. Les Benjamites leur avaient tué déjà environ trente hommes, et ils disaient: Certainement les voilà battus devant nous comme dans le premier combat!

Then the men of Israel turned around to fight in battle. Benjamin began to fight and kill about thirty men of Israel. They said, “For sure they are destroyed in front of us as in the first battle.”

40 C ependant une épaisse colonne de fumée commençait à s'élever de la ville. Les Benjamites regardèrent derrière eux; et voici, de la ville entière les flammes montaient vers le ciel.

But when the cloud of smoke started to rise from the city, the men of Benjamin looked behind them. They saw the whole city going up in smoke to heaven.

41 L es hommes d'Israël avaient fait volte-face; et ceux de Benjamin furent épouvantés, en voyant le désastre qui allait les atteindre.

Then the men of Israel turned around. And the men of Benjamin were filled with fear. For they saw that they were in much danger.

42 I ls tournèrent le dos devant les hommes d'Israël, et s'enfuirent par le chemin du désert. Mais les assaillants s'attachèrent à leurs pas, et ils détruisirent pendant le trajet ceux qui étaient sortis des villes.

So they turned their backs to the men of Israel and ran toward the desert. But they were caught in the battle. Those who came out of the cities destroyed them.

43 I ls enveloppèrent Benjamin, le poursuivirent, l'écrasèrent dès qu'il voulait se reposer, jusqu'en face de Guibea du côté du soleil levant.

They gathered around the people of Benjamin. They ran after them without stopping to rest and came upon them at the east side of Gibeah.

44 I l tomba dix-huit mille hommes de Benjamin, tous vaillants.

So 18, 000 men of Benjamin were killed. All of them were powerful soldiers.

45 P armi ceux qui tournèrent le dos pour s'enfuir vers le désert au rocher de Rimmon, les hommes d'Israël en firent périr cinq mille sur les routes; ils les poursuivirent jusqu'à Guideom, et ils en tuèrent deux mille.

The others turned and ran toward the desert to the rock of Rimmon. But Israel killed 5, 000 of them on the roads, and 2, 000 at Gidom.

46 L e nombre total des Benjamites qui périrent ce jour-là fut de vingt-cinq mille hommes tirant l'épée, tous vaillants.

So 25, 000 men of Benjamin were killed that day. All of them were powerful soldiers who used the sword.

47 S ix cents hommes, qui avaient tourné le dos et qui s'étaient enfuis vers le désert au rocher de Rimmon, demeurèrent là pendant quatre mois.

But 600 men ran toward the desert to the rock of Rimmon. They stayed there for four months.

48 L es hommes d'Israël revinrent vers les fils de Benjamin, et ils les frappèrent du tranchant de l'épée, depuis les hommes des villes jusqu'au bétail, et tout ce que l'on trouva. Ils mirent aussi le feu à toutes les villes qui existaient.

Then the men of Israel returned to fight the people of Benjamin. They destroyed them, their whole city, the cattle and all they found, with the sword. And they set fire to all the cities they found.
