1 I l y avait à Césarée un homme nommé Corneille, centenier dans la cohorte dite italienne.

There was a man in the city of Caesarea by the name of Cornelius. He was a captain of an Italian group of the army.

2 C et homme était pieux et craignait Dieu, avec toute sa maison; il faisait beaucoup d'aumônes au peuple, et priait Dieu continuellement.

He and his family were good people and honored God. He gave much money to the people and prayed always to God.

3 V ers la neuvième heure du jour, il vit clairement dans une vision un ange de Dieu qui entra chez lui, et qui lui dit: Corneille!

One afternoon about three o’clock he saw in a dream what God wanted him to see. An angel of God came to him and said, “Cornelius.”

4 L es regards fixés sur lui, et saisi d'effroi, il répondit: Qu'est-ce, Seigneur? Et l'ange lui dit: Tes prières et tes aumônes sont montées devant Dieu, et il s'en est souvenu.

He was afraid as he looked at the angel. He said, “What is it, Lord?” The angel said, “Your prayers and your gifts of money have gone up to God. He has remembered them.

5 E nvoie maintenant des hommes à Joppé, et fais venir Simon, surnommé Pierre;

Send some men to the city of Joppa and ask Simon Peter to come here.

6 i l est logé chez un certain Simon, corroyeur, dont la maison est près de la mer.

He is living with Simon, the man who works with leather. His house is by the sea-shore. He will tell you what you must do.”

7 D ès que l'ange qui lui avait parlé fut parti, Corneille appela deux de ses serviteurs, et un soldat pieux d'entre ceux qui étaient attachés à sa personne;

The angel left him. Then Cornelius called two of his servants and a religious soldier who took care of him.

8 e t, après leur avoir tout raconté, il les envoya à Joppé.

He told what had happened. Then he sent them to Joppa. Peter’s Dream

9 L e lendemain, comme ils étaient en route, et qu'ils approchaient de la ville, Pierre monta sur le toit, vers la sixième heure, pour prier.

The next day they went on their way. About noon they were coming near the town. At this time Peter went up on the roof to pray.

10 I l eut faim, et il voulut manger. Pendant qu'on lui préparait à manger, il tomba en extase.

He became very hungry and wanted something to eat. While they were getting food ready to eat, he saw in a dream things God wanted him to see.

11 I l vit le ciel ouvert, et un objet semblable à une grande nappe attachée par les quatre coins, qui descendait et s'abaissait vers la terre,

He saw heaven open up and something like a large linen cloth being let down to earth by the four corners.

12 e t où se trouvaient tous les quadrupèdes et les reptiles de la terre et les oiseaux du ciel.

On the cloth were all kinds of four-footed animals and snakes of the earth and birds of the sky.

13 E t une voix lui dit: Lève-toi, Pierre, tue et mange.

A voice came to him, “Get up, Peter, kill something and eat it.”

14 M ais Pierre dit: Non, Seigneur, car je n'ai jamais rien mangé de souillé ni d'impur.

Peter said, “No, Lord! I have never eaten anything that our Law says is unclean.”

15 E t pour la seconde fois la voix se fit encore entendre à lui: Ce que Dieu a déclaré pur, ne le regarde pas comme souillé.

The voice said the second time, “What God has made clean you must not say is unclean.”

16 C ela arriva jusqu'à trois fois; et aussitôt après, l'objet fut retiré dans le ciel.

This happened three times. Then it was taken back to heaven. Cornelius’ Men Find Peter

17 T andis que Pierre ne savait en lui-même que penser du sens de la vision qu'il avait eue, voici, les hommes envoyés par Corneille, s'étant informés de la maison de Simon, se présentèrent à la porte,

Peter thought about the meaning of the dream. The men that Cornelius had sent came. They were standing by the gate asking about Simon’s house.

18 e t demandèrent à haute voix si c'était là que logeait Simon, surnommé Pierre.

They called to ask if Simon Peter was staying there.

19 E t comme Pierre était à réfléchir sur la vision, l'Esprit lui dit: Voici, trois hommes te demandent;

Peter was still thinking about the dream when the Holy Spirit said to him, “See, three men are looking for you.

20 l ève-toi, descends, et pars avec eux sans hésiter, car c'est moi qui les ai envoyés.

Get up. Go down and go with them. Do not doubt if you should go, because I sent them.”

21 P ierre donc descendit, et il dit à ces hommes: Voici, je suis celui que vous cherchez; quel est le motif qui vous amène?

Peter went down to the men who had been sent by Cornelius. He said, “I am the one you are looking for. Why have you come?”

22 I ls répondirent: Corneille, centenier, homme juste et craignant Dieu, et de qui toute la nation des Juifs rend un bon témoignage, a été divinement averti par un saint ange de te faire venir dans sa maison et d'entendre tes paroles.

They said, “Cornelius sent us. He is a captain and a good man and he honors God. The whole Jewish nation can say this is true. An angel from God told him to send for you. He asks you to come to his house. He wants to hear what you have to say.” Peter Goes to Cornelius

23 P ierre donc les fit entrer, et les logea. Le lendemain, il se leva, et partit avec eux. Quelques-uns des frères de Joppé l'accompagnèrent.

Peter asked them to come in and stay with him for the night. The next day he went with them. Some of the brothers from Joppa went along.

24 I ls arrivèrent à Césarée le jour suivant. Corneille les attendait, et avait invité ses parents et ses amis intimes.

The next day they came to Caesarea. Cornelius was looking for them. He had gathered all his family and close friends at his house.

25 L orsque Pierre entra, Corneille, qui était allé au-devant de lui, tomba à ses pieds et se prosterna.

When Peter came, Cornelius got down at his feet and worshiped him.

26 M ais Pierre le releva, en disant: Lève-toi; moi aussi, je suis un homme.

But Peter raised him up and said, “Get up! I am just a man like you.”

27 E t conversant avec lui, il entra, et trouva beaucoup de personnes réunies.

As Peter spoke with Cornelius, he went into the house and found a large group of people gathered together.

28 V ous savez, leur dit-il, qu'il est défendu à un Juif de se lier avec un étranger ou d'entrer chez lui; mais Dieu m'a appris à ne regarder aucun homme comme souillé et impur.

Peter said to them, “You know it is against our Law for a Jew to visit a person of another nation. But God has shown me I should not say that any man is unclean.

29 C 'est pourquoi je n'ai pas eu d'objection à venir, puisque vous m'avez appelé; je vous demande donc pour quel motif vous m'avez envoyé chercher.

For this reason I came as soon as you sent for me. But I want to ask you why you sent for me?”

30 C orneille dit: Il y a quatre jours, à cette heure-ci, je priais dans ma maison à la neuvième heure; et voici, un homme vêtu d'un habit éclatant se présenta devant moi, et dit:

Cornelius said, “Four days ago at three o’clock in the afternoon I was praying here in my house. All at once, I saw a man standing in front of me. He had on bright clothes.

31 C orneille, ta prière a été exaucée, et Dieu s'est souvenu de tes aumônes.

He said to me, ‘Cornelius, God has heard your prayers and has remembered your gifts of love.

32 E nvoie donc à Joppé, et fais venir Simon, surnommé Pierre; il est logé dans la maison de Simon, corroyeur, près de la mer.

You must send to Joppa and ask Simon Peter to come here. He is staying at the house of Simon, the man who works with leather. His house is by the sea-shore.’

33 A ussitôt j'ai envoyé vers toi, et tu as bien fait de venir. Maintenant donc nous sommes tous devant Dieu, pour entendre tout ce que le Seigneur t'a ordonné de nous dire.

I sent for you at once. You have done well to come. We are all here and God is with us. We are ready to hear whatever the Lord has told you to say.” Peter Preaches in Cornelius’ House

34 A lors Pierre, ouvrant la bouche, dit: En vérité, je reconnais que Dieu ne fait point acception de personnes,

Then Peter said, “I can see, for sure, that God does not respect one person more than another.

35 m ais qu'en toute nation celui qui le craint et qui pratique la justice lui est agréable.

He is pleased with any man in any nation who honors Him and does what is right.

36 I l a envoyé la parole aux fils d'Israël, en leur annonçant la paix par Jésus Christ, qui est le Seigneur de tous.

He has sent His Word to the Jews. He told them the Good News of peace through Jesus Christ. Jesus is Lord of All.

37 V ous savez ce qui est arrivé dans toute la Judée, après avoir commencé en Galilée, à la suite du baptême que Jean a prêché;

You know the story yourselves. It was told in all the country of Judea. It began in the country of Galilee after the preaching of John the Baptist.

38 v ous savez comment Dieu a oint du Saint Esprit et de force Jésus de Nazareth, qui allait de lieu en lieu faisant du bien et guérissant tous ceux qui étaient sous l'empire du diable, car Dieu était avec lui.

God gave Jesus of Nazareth the Holy Spirit and power. He went around doing good and healing all who were troubled by the devil because God was with Him.

39 N ous sommes témoins de tout ce qu'il a fait dans le pays des Juifs et à Jérusalem. Ils l'ont tué, en le pendant au bois.

We have seen and heard everything He did in the land of the Jews and in Jerusalem. And yet they killed Him by nailing Him to a cross.

40 D ieu l'a ressuscité le troisième jour, et il a permis qu'il apparût,

God raised Him to life on the third day and made Him to be seen.

41 n on à tout le peuple, mais aux témoins choisis d'avance par Dieu, à nous qui avons mangé et bu avec lui, après qu'il fut ressuscité des morts.

Not all the people saw Him but those who were chosen to see Him. We saw Him. We ate and drank with Him after He was raised from the dead.

42 E t Jésus nous a ordonné de prêcher au peuple et d'attester que c'est lui qui a été établi par Dieu juge des vivants et des morts.

He told us to preach to the people and tell them that God gave Christ the right to be the One Who says who is guilty of the living and the dead.

43 T ous les prophètes rendent de lui le témoignage que quiconque croit en lui reçoit par son nom le pardon des péchés.

All the early preachers spoke of this. Everyone who puts his trust in Christ will have his sins forgiven through His name.” The Holy Spirit Comes to the Family of Cornelius

44 C omme Pierre prononçait encore ces mots, le Saint Esprit descendit sur tous ceux qui écoutaient la parole.

While Peter was speaking, the Holy Spirit came on all who were hearing his words.

45 T ous les fidèles circoncis qui étaient venus avec Pierre furent étonnés de ce que le don du Saint Esprit était aussi répandu sur les païens.

The Jewish followers who had come along with Peter were surprised and wondered because the gift of the Holy Spirit was also given to the people who were not Jews.

46 C ar ils les entendaient parler en langues et glorifier Dieu.

They heard them speak in special sounds and give thanks to God. Then Peter said,

47 A lors Pierre dit: Peut-on refuser l'eau du baptême à ceux qui ont reçu le Saint Esprit aussi bien que nous?

“Will anyone say that these people may not be baptized? They have received the Holy Spirit just as we have.”

48 E t il ordonna qu'ils fussent baptisés au nom du Seigneur. Sur quoi ils le prièrent de rester quelques jours auprès d'eux.

He gave the word that they should be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then they asked Peter to stay with them for some days.
