1 L a septième année, Jehojada s'anima de courage, et traita alliance avec les chefs de centaines, Azaria, fils de Jerocham, Ismaël, fils de Jochanan, Azaria, fils d'Obed, Maaséja, fils d'Adaja, et Élischaphath, fils de Zicri.

In the seventh year, Jehoiada made himself strong. He made an agreement with the captains of hundreds. These captains were Azariah the son of Jeroham, Ishmael the son of Johanan, Azariah the son of Obed, Maaseiah the son of Adaiah, and Elishaphat the son of Zichri. They made an agreement with Jehoiada.

2 I ls parcoururent Juda, et ils rassemblèrent les Lévites de toutes les villes de Juda et les chefs de famille d'Israël; et ils vinrent à Jérusalem.

And they went through Judah and gathered the Levites from all the cities. They gathered the heads of the fathers’ houses of Israel. And they came to Jerusalem.

3 T oute l'assemblée traita alliance avec le roi dans la maison de Dieu. Et Jehojada leur dit: Voici, le fils du roi régnera, comme l'Éternel l'a déclaré à l'égard des fils de David.

Then all the people made an agreement with the king in the house of God. Jehoiada said to them, “See, the king’s son will rule, as the Lord has spoken about the sons of David.

4 V oici ce que vous ferez. Le tiers qui parmi vous entre en service le jour du sabbat, sacrificateurs et Lévites, fera la garde des seuils,

This is what you must do. One third of you religious leaders and Levites who come in on the Day of Rest will watch the gates.

5 u n autre tiers se tiendra dans la maison du roi, et un tiers à la porte de Jesod. Tout le peuple sera dans les parvis de la maison de l'Éternel.

One third will be at the king’s house, and one third at the Gate of the Foundation. And all the people will be in the open places of the house of the Lord.

6 Q ue personne n'entre dans la maison de l'Éternel, excepté les sacrificateurs et les Lévites de service: ils entreront, car ils sont saints. Et tout le peuple fera la garde de l'Éternel.

But let no one come into the house of the Lord except the religious leaders and the Levite helpers. They may come in, for they are holy. But let all the other people obey the law against going into the holy place of the Lord.

7 L es Lévites entoureront le roi de toutes parts, chacun les armes à la main, et l'on donnera la mort à quiconque entrera dans la maison: vous serez près du roi quand il entrera et quand il sortira.

The Levites will stand around the king. Each one will have his spear in his hand. And whoever goes into the house will be killed. Be with the king when he comes in and when he goes out.”

8 L es Lévites et tout Juda exécutèrent tous les ordres qu'avait donnés le sacrificateur Jehojada. Ils prirent chacun leurs gens, ceux qui entraient en service et ceux qui sortaient de service le jour du sabbat; car le sacrificateur Jehojada n'avait exempté aucune des divisions.

The Levites and all Judah did all that Jehoiada the religious leader told them. Each one of them took his men who were to come in on the Day of Rest, with those who were to go out on the Day of Rest. For Jehoiada the religious leader did not send away any of the groups.

9 L e sacrificateur Jehojada remit aux chefs de centaines les lances et les boucliers, grands et petits, qui provenaient du roi David, et qui se trouvaient dans la maison de Dieu.

Then Jehoiada the religious leader gave the captains of hundreds the spears and the large and small battle-coverings that had been King David’s, which were in the house of God.

10 I l fit entourer le roi en plaçant tout le peuple, chacun les armes à la main, depuis le côté droit jusqu'au côté gauche de la maison, près de l'autel et près de la maison.

And he put all the people in their places around the king. Each man had his spear in his hand. They were put in their places from the right side of the house to the left side, around the altar and the house.

11 O n fit avancer le fils du roi, on mit sur lui le diadème et le témoignage, et on l'établit roi. Et Jehojada et ses fils l'oignirent, et ils dirent: Vive le roi!

Then they brought out the king’s son and put the crown on him. They gave him the Law, and made him king. Jehoiada and his sons poured oil on him and said, “Long live the king!” Death of Athaliah

She looked and saw the king beside his pillar at the gate. The captains and those who blew the horns were beside the king. And all the people of the land were filled with joy and blew horns. The singers were playing music and leading the praise. Athaliah tore her clothes and called out, “They are turning against the queen!”

14 A lors le sacrificateur Jehojada, faisant approcher les chefs de centaines qui étaient à la tête de l'armée, leur dit: Faites-la sortir en dehors des rangs, et que l'on tue par l'épée quiconque la suivra. Car le sacrificateur avait dit: Ne la mettez pas à mort dans la maison de l'Éternel.

Then Jehoiada the religious leader brought out the captains of hundreds who were over the army, and said to them, “Bring her out from among the groups of people. And kill with the sword whoever follows her.” For the religious leader said, “Do not kill her in the house of the Lord.”

15 O n lui fit place, et elle se rendit à la maison du roi par l'entrée de la porte des chevaux: c'est là qu'ils lui donnèrent la mort.

So they took hold of her. And when she came to the Horse Gate of the king’s house, they killed her there.

16 J ehojada traita entre lui, tout le peuple et le roi, une alliance par laquelle ils devaient être le peuple de l'Éternel.

Then Jehoiada made an agreement between himself and all the people and the king, that they should be the Lord’s people.

17 T out le peuple entra dans la maison de Baal, et ils la démolirent; ils brisèrent ses autels et ses images, et ils tuèrent devant les autels Matthan, prêtre de Baal.

All the people went to the house of Baal and tore it down. They broke in pieces his altars and the objects made to look like him. And they killed Mattan the religious leader of Baal in front of the altars.

18 J ehojada remit les fonctions de la maison de l'Éternel entre les mains des sacrificateurs, des Lévites, que David avait distribués dans la maison de l'Éternel pour qu'ils offrissent des holocaustes à l'Éternel, comme il est écrit dans la loi de Moïse, au milieu des réjouissances et des chants, d'après les ordonnances de David.

Then Jehoiada put the duties of the Lord’s house under the care of the religious leaders and the Levites. David had chosen them to take care of the Lord’s house. They were to give the burnt gifts of the Lord, as it is written in the Law of Moses. It was to be done with joy and singing, as David had told them.

19 I l plaça les portiers aux portes de la maison de l'Éternel, afin qu'il n'entrât aucune personne souillée de quelque manière que ce fût.

And Jehoiada put the gate-keepers in their places of the Lord’s house. This was so no one would go in who was in any way unclean.

20 I l prit les chefs de centaines, les hommes considérés, ceux qui avaient autorité parmi le peuple, et tout le peuple du pays, et il fit descendre le roi de la maison de l'Éternel. Ils entrèrent dans la maison du roi par la porte supérieure, et ils firent asseoir le roi sur le trône royal.

Then he took the captains of hundreds, the princes, the leaders of the people, and all the people of the land. And they brought the king down from the house of the Lord. They came through the high gate to the king’s house. And they placed the king upon the throne of the nation.

21 T out le peuple du pays se réjouissait, et la ville était tranquille. On avait fait mourir Athalie par l'épée.

So all the people of the land were filled with joy, and the city was quiet. For they had killed Athaliah with the sword.
