1 Q uelques-uns des anciens d'Israël vinrent auprès de moi et s'assirent devant moi.

Then some leaders of Israel came and sat down in front of me.

2 E t la parole de l'Éternel me fut adressée, en ces mots:

And the Word of the Lord came to me saying,

3 F ils de l'homme, ces gens-là portent leurs idoles dans leur coeur, et ils attachent les regards sur ce qui les a fait tomber dans l'iniquité. Me laisserai-je consulter par eux?

“Son of man, these men have taken false gods into their hearts. They have put in front of their faces the sin which is the cause of their fall. Should I let Myself be asked questions by them at all?

4 C 'est pourquoi parle-leur, et dis-leur: Ainsi parle le Seigneur, l'Éternel: Tout homme de la maison d'Israël qui porte ses idoles dans son coeur, et qui attache les regards sur ce qui l'a fait tomber dans son iniquité, -s'il vient s'adresser au prophète, -moi, l'Éternel, je lui répondrai, malgré la multitude de ses idoles,

So speak to them and tell them, ‘The Lord God says, “Every man of Israel who has given his heart to false gods and lets them lead him into sin and then comes to the man of God, I the Lord will answer him, the answer that his many false gods should get,

5 a fin de saisir dans leur propre coeur ceux de la maison d'Israël qui se sont éloignés de moi avec toutes leurs idoles.

that I may again have the hearts of the people of Israel who have left Me for their false gods.”’

6 C 'est pourquoi dis à la maison d'Israël: Ainsi parle le Seigneur, l'Éternel: Revenez, et détournez-vous de vos idoles, détournez les regards de toutes vos abominations!

“So tell the people of Israel, ‘The Lord God says, “Be sorry for your sins and turn away from your false gods. Turn your faces away from all your sinful ways.

7 C ar tout homme de la maison d'Israël, ou des étrangers séjournant en Israël, qui s'est éloigné de moi, qui porte ses idoles dans son coeur, et qui attache les regards sur ce qui l'a fait tomber dans son iniquité, -s'il vient s'adresser au prophète pour me consulter par lui, -moi, l'Éternel, je lui répondrai par moi.

If a man of Israel or a stranger living in Israel who turns away from Me and gives his heart to false gods, and worships them, and if he then comes to the man of God to get answers from Me, I the Lord will answer him Myself.

8 J e tournerai ma face contre cet homme, je ferai de lui un signe et un sujet de sarcasme, et je l'exterminerai du milieu de mon peuple. Et vous saurez que je suis l'Éternel.

I will set My face against that man and make him something special to see and to speak against. I will cut him off from among My people. And you will know that I am the Lord.

9 S i le prophète se laisse séduire, s'il prononce une parole, c'est moi, l'Éternel, qui aurai séduit ce prophète; j'étendrai ma main contre lui, et je le détruirai du milieu de mon peuple d'Israël.

But if the man who speaks in My name is given a false answer, it is I, the Lord, Who has caused him to speak. And I will put out My hand against him and destroy him from among My people Israel.

10 I ls porteront ainsi la peine de leur iniquité; la peine du prophète sera comme la peine de celui qui consulte,

They will suffer the punishment of their sin. The man who asks the question and the man who speaks to him in My name will both be punished in the same way.

11 a fin que la maison d'Israël ne s'égare plus loin de moi, et qu'elle ne se souille plus par toutes ses transgressions. Alors ils seront mon peuple, et je serai leur Dieu, dit le Seigneur, l'Éternel.

This is so that the people of Israel may no longer turn away from Me, and no longer make themselves sinful with all their wrong-doing. They will be My people and I will be their God,”’ says the Lord God.” Those Not Faithful Are Judged

12 L a parole de l'Éternel me fut adressée, en ces mots:

Then the Word of the Lord came to me saying,

13 F ils de l'homme, lorsqu'un pays pécherait contre moi en se livrant à l'infidélité, et que j'étendrais ma main sur lui, -si je brisais pour lui le bâton du pain, si je lui envoyais la famine, si j'en exterminais les hommes et les bêtes,

“Son of man, if a country sins against Me by not being faithful, I will put out My hand against it. I will destroy its store of bread, and send hunger against it, and take away both man and animal from it.

14 e t qu'il y eût au milieu de lui ces trois hommes, Noé, Daniel et Job, ils sauveraient leur âme par leur justice, dit le Seigneur, l'Éternel.

For even if these three men, Noah, Daniel and Job, were in this country, they would save only their own lives by being right and good,” says the Lord God.

15 S i je faisais parcourir le pays par des bêtes féroces qui le dépeupleraient, s'il devenait un désert où personne ne passerait à cause de ces bêtes,

“If I sent wild animals to pass through the land to kill its people and destroy it so that no one would go through it because of the wild animals,

16 e t qu'il y eût au milieu de lui ces trois hommes, je suis vivant! dit le Seigneur, l'Éternel, ils ne sauveraient ni fils ni filles, eux seuls seraient sauvés, et le pays deviendrait un désert.

even if these three men were in the land, as I live,” says the Lord God, “they could not save their sons or their daughters. They alone would be saved, but the country would be laid waste.

17 O u si j'amenais l'épée contre ce pays, si je disais: Que l'épée parcoure le pays! si j'en exterminais les hommes et les bêtes,

If I bring a sword against that country and say, ‘Let the sword pass through the country and cut off man and animal from it,’

18 e t qu'il y eût au milieu de lui ces trois hommes, je suis vivant! dit le Seigneur, l'Éternel, ils ne sauveraient ni fils ni filles, mais eux seuls seraient sauvés.

even if these three men were in the land, as I live,” says the Lord God, “they could not save their sons or their daughters. They alone would be saved.

19 O u si j'envoyais la peste dans ce pays, si je répandais contre lui ma fureur par la mortalité, pour en exterminer les hommes et les bêtes,

Or if I send a disease against that country and show My anger by killing, to take away man and animal from it,

20 e t qu'il y eût au milieu de lui Noé, Daniel et Job, je suis vivant! dit le Seigneur, l'Éternel, ils ne sauveraient ni fils ni filles, mais ils sauveraient leur âme par leur justice.

even if Noah, Daniel and Job were in the land, as I live,” says the Lord God, “they could not save their son or daughter. They would save only themselves by being right and good.

21 O ui, ainsi parle le Seigneur, l'Éternel: Quoique j'envoie contre Jérusalem mes quatre châtiments terribles, l'épée, la famine, les bêtes féroces et la peste, pour en exterminer les hommes et les bêtes,

“For the Lord God says, ‘How much worse will it be when I send my four worst punishments against Jerusalem! I will send the sword, hunger, wild animals, and disease, to take away man and animal from it!

22 i l y aura néanmoins un reste qui échappera, qui en sortira, des fils et des filles. Voici, ils arriveront auprès de vous; vous verrez leur conduite et leurs actions, et vous vous consolerez du malheur que je fais venir sur Jérusalem, de tout ce que je fais venir sur elle.

Yet there will be some people and their children left alive in it who will be brought out. When they come to you, see how sinful they are. Then you will know that all the trouble I brought upon Jerusalem was right.

23 I ls vous consoleront, quand vous verrez leur conduite et leurs actions; et vous reconnaîtrez que ce n'est pas sans raison que je fais tout ce que je lui fais, dit le Seigneur, l'Éternel.

It will help you when you see how they act. Then you will know that there was a good reason for everything I did,’ says the Lord God.”
