1 T hen the Lord answered Job out of the strong wind and said,

L'Éternel répondit à Job du milieu de la tempête et dit:

2 “ Who is this that makes words of wisdom dark by speaking without much learning?

Qui est celui qui obscurcit mes desseins Par des discours sans intelligence?

3 N ow get ready like a man, and I will ask you some questions and you answer Me.

Ceins tes reins comme un vaillant homme; Je t'interrogerai, et tu m'instruiras.

4 W here were you when I began building the earth? Tell Me, if you have understanding.

Où étais-tu quand je fondais la terre? Dis-le, si tu as de l'intelligence.

5 W ho decided how big it was to be, since you know? Who looked to see if it was as big as it should be?

Qui en a fixé les dimensions, le sais-tu? Ou qui a étendu sur elle le cordeau?

6 W hat was it built upon? Who laid its first stone,

Sur quoi ses bases sont-elles appuyées? Ou qui en a posé la pierre angulaire,

7 w hen the morning stars sang together and all the sons of God called out for joy?

Alors que les étoiles du matin éclataient en chants d'allégresse, Et que tous les fils de Dieu poussaient des cris de joie?

8 “ Who shut up the sea with doors, when it rushed out from its secret place?

Qui a fermé la mer avec des portes, Quand elle s'élança du sein maternel;

9 I made clouds its clothing, and put much darkness around it.

Quand je fis de la nuée son vêtement, Et de l'obscurité ses langes;

10 I marked the places where it could not pass, and set locks and doors.

Quand je lui imposai ma loi, Et que je lui mis des barrières et des portes;

11 A nd I said, ‘You will come this far, and no farther. Here will your proud waves stop.’

Quand je dis: Tu viendras jusqu'ici, tu n'iras pas au delà; Ici s'arrêtera l'orgueil de tes flots?

12 “ Have you ever in your life told the morning when to come, and caused the first light of day to know its place,

Depuis que tu existes, as-tu commandé au matin? As-tu montré sa place à l'aurore,

13 t hat it might take hold of the ends of the earth, and the sinful be shaken out of it?

Pour qu'elle saisisse les extrémités de la terre, Et que les méchants en soient secoués;

14 I t is changed like clay when an object is pushed down to mark it, and they stand out like clothing.

Pour que la terre se transforme comme l'argile qui reçoit une empreinte, Et qu'elle soit parée comme d'un vêtement;

15 T he light of the sinful is held back, and the arm lifted up is broken.

Pour que les méchants soient privés de leur lumière, Et que le bras qui se lève soit brisé?

16 “ Have you gone into the wells of the sea? Have you walked on the bottom of the deep sea?

As-tu pénétré jusqu'aux sources de la mer? T'es-tu promené dans les profondeurs de l'abîme?

17 H ave the gates of death been shown to you? Or have you seen the gates of the deep darkness?

Les portes de la mort t'ont-elles été ouvertes? As-tu vu les portes de l'ombre de la mort?

18 H ave you understood how great the earth is? Tell Me, if you know all this.

As-tu embrassé du regard l'étendue de la terre? Parle, si tu sais toutes ces choses.

19 “ Where does the light come from? And where is the place of darkness,

Où est le chemin qui conduit au séjour de la lumière? Et les ténèbres, où ont-elles leur demeure?

20 t hat you may take it to its land, and know the paths to its home?

Peux-tu les saisir à leur limite, Et connaître les sentiers de leur habitation?

21 Y ou know, for you were born then. You are very old!

Tu le sais, car alors tu étais né, Et le nombre de tes jours est grand!

22 H ave you gone into the store-houses of the snow? Have you seen the store-houses of the hail,

Es-tu parvenu jusqu'aux amas de neige? As-tu vu les dépôts de grêle,

23 w hich I have kept for the time of trouble, for the day of war and battle?

Que je tiens en réserve pour les temps de détresse, Pour les jours de guerre et de bataille?

24 W hat is the way to the place where the light is divided, or the east wind spread over the earth?

Par quel chemin la lumière se divise-t-elle, Et le vent d'orient se répand-il sur la terre?

25 “ Who has cut open a way for the flood, and a path for the thunderstorm?

Qui a ouvert un passage à la pluie, Et tracé la route de l'éclair et du tonnerre,

26 W ho brings rain on the land without people, on a desert without a man in it,

Pour que la pluie tombe sur une terre sans habitants, Sur un désert où il n'y a point d'hommes;

27 t o fill the need of the wasted land, and to make the grass grow?

Pour qu'elle abreuve les lieux solitaires et arides, Et qu'elle fasse germer et sortir l'herbe?

28 D oes the rain have a father? Who has given birth to the drops of rain?

La pluie a-t-elle un père? Qui fait naître les gouttes de la rosée?

29 W ho gave birth to ice? And who gave birth to the snow water of heaven?

Du sein de qui sort la glace, Et qui enfante le frimas du ciel,

30 W ater becomes hard like stone, and the top of the sea is covered with ice.

Pour que les eaux se cachent comme une pierre, Et que la surface de l'abîme soit enchaînée?

31 “ Can you tie the chains of the stars of Pleiades, or loose the ropes of Orion?

Noues-tu les liens des Pléiades, Ou détaches-tu les cordages de l'Orion?

32 C an you lead the groups of stars out at the right times? Can you lead the stars of the Bear with her young?

Fais-tu paraître en leur temps les signes du zodiaque, Et conduis-tu la Grande Ourse avec ses petits?

33 D o you know the laws of the heavens? Can you make them to rule over the earth?

Connais-tu les lois du ciel? Règles-tu son pouvoir sur la terre?

34 “ Can you lift up your voice to the clouds, that a flood of water may cover you?

Élèves-tu la voix jusqu'aux nuées, Pour appeler à toi des torrents d'eaux?

35 C an you send out lightnings, that they may go and say to you, ‘Here we are’?

Lances-tu les éclairs? Partent-ils? Te disent-ils: Nous voici?

36 W ho has given wisdom to the heart? Who has given understanding to the mind?

Qui a mis la sagesse dans le coeur, Ou qui a donné l'intelligence à l'esprit?

37 W ho can number the clouds by wisdom? Or who can push over the water jars of the heavens,

Qui peut avec sagesse compter les nuages, Et verser les outres des cieux,

38 w hen the dust gathers together and becomes hard?

Pour que la poussière se mette à ruisseler, Et que les mottes de terre se collent ensemble?

39 “ Can you hunt food for the lion? Can you fill the hunger of the young lions,

(39: 1) Chasses-tu la proie pour la lionne, Et apaises-tu la faim des lionceaux,

40 w hen they lie in their own place in the rock, or wait in their hiding place?

(39: 2) Quand ils sont couchés dans leur tanière, Quand ils sont en embuscade dans leur repaire?

41 W ho gets the food ready for the raven, when its young cry to God and go about without food?

(39: 3) Qui prépare au corbeau sa pâture, Quand ses petits crient vers Dieu, Quand ils sont errants et affamés?
