1 T hen came the daughters of Zelophehad the son of Hepher, the son of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, from the families of Manasseh the son of Joseph. The names of his daughters were Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah and Tirzah.

Les filles de Tselophchad, fils de Hépher, fils de Galaad, fils de Makir, fils de Manassé, des familles de Manassé, fils de Joseph, et dont les noms étaient Machla, Noa, Hogla, Milca et Thirsta,

2 T hey stood in front of Moses and Eleazar the religious leader, and the leaders, and all the people at the door of the meeting tent. The daughters said,

s'approchèrent et se présentèrent devant Moïse, devant le sacrificateur Éléazar, et devant les princes et toute l'assemblée, à l'entrée de la tente d'assignation. Elles dirent:

3 “ Our father died in the desert. He was not one of those who gathered together with Korah against the Lord. But he died for his own sin, and he had no sons.

Notre père est mort dans le désert; il n'était pas au milieu de l'assemblée de ceux qui se révoltèrent contre l'Éternel, de l'assemblée de Koré, mais il est mort pour son péché, et il n'avait point de fils.

4 W hy should the name of our father be taken away from his family because he had no son? Give us land among our father’s brothers.”

Pourquoi le nom de notre père serait-il retranché du milieu de sa famille, parce qu'il n'avait point eu de fils? Donne-nous une possession parmi les frères de notre père.

5 M oses asked the Lord what should be done.

Moïse porta la cause devant l'Éternel.

6 T hen the Lord said to Moses,

Et l'Éternel dit à Moïse:

7 “ The daughters of Zelophehad are right in what they say. Be sure to give them their own land among their father’s brothers. Give them what would have been given to their father.

Les filles de Tselophchad ont raison. Tu leur donneras en héritage une possession parmi les frères de leur père, et c'est à elles que tu feras passer l'héritage de leur père.

8 A nd say to the people of Israel, ‘If a man dies and has no son, then give what belongs to him to his daughter.

Tu parleras aux enfants d'Israël, et tu diras: Lorsqu'un homme mourra sans laisser de fils, vous ferez passer son héritage à sa fille.

9 I f he has no daughter, then give what belongs to him to his brothers.

S'il n'a point de fille, vous donnerez son héritage à ses frères.

10 I f he has no brothers, give what belongs to him to his father’s brothers.

S'il n'a point de frères, vous donnerez son héritage aux frères de son père.

11 A nd if his father has no brothers, then you must give what belongs to him to the nearest person in his own family and it will be his. This will be a Law to the people of Israel, just as the Lord told Moses.’” Joshua Takes over from Moses

S'il n'y a point de frères de son père, vous donnerez son héritage au plus proche parent dans sa famille, et c'est lui qui le possédera. Ce sera pour les enfants d'Israël une loi et un droit, comme l'Éternel l'a ordonné à Moïse.

12 T hen the Lord said to Moses, “Go up to this mountain of Abarim, and see the land I have given to the people of Israel.

L'Éternel dit à Moïse: Monte sur cette montagne d'Abarim, et regarde le pays que je donne aux enfants d'Israël.

13 W hen you have seen it, you will be buried with your people as Aaron your brother was.

Tu le regarderas; mais toi aussi, tu sera recueilli auprès de ton peuple, comme Aaron, ton frère, a été recueilli;

14 F or you went against My Word when the people complained in the Desert of Zin. You should have honored Me as holy at the waters in front of their eyes.” (These are the waters of Meribah of Kadesh in the Desert of Zin.)

parce que vous avez été rebelles à mon ordre, dans le désert de Tsin, lors de la contestation de l'assemblée, et que vous ne m'avez point sanctifié à leurs yeux à l'occasion des eaux. Ce sont les eaux de contestation, à Kadès, dans le désert de Tsin.

15 M oses said to the Lord,

Moïse parla à l'Éternel, et dit:

16 “ May the Lord, the God of the spirits of all flesh, choose a man to lead the people.

Que l'Éternel, le Dieu des esprits de toute chair, établisse sur l'assemblée un homme

17 L et this man go out and come in before them. Let him lead them out and bring them in. Then the people of the Lord may not be like sheep which have no shepherd.”

qui sorte devant eux et qui entre devant eux, qui les fasse sortir et qui les fasse entrer, afin que l'assemblée de l'Éternel ne soit pas comme des brebis qui n'ont point de berger.

18 S o the Lord said to Moses, “Take Joshua the son of Nun, in whom is the Spirit, and lay your hand on him.

L'Éternel dit à Moïse: Prends Josué, fils de Nun, homme en qui réside l'esprit; et tu poseras ta main sur lui.

19 H ave him stand in front of Eleazar the religious leader and in front of all the people. Let them see you give him the work he must do.

Tu le placeras devant le sacrificateur Éléazar et devant toute l'assemblée, et tu lui donneras des ordres sous leurs yeux.

20 G ive some of your power to him so all the people of Israel will obey him.

Tu le rendras participant de ta dignité, afin que toute l'assemblée des enfants d'Israël l'écoute.

21 H e will stand in front of Eleazar the religious leader, who will learn My will for him by using the Urim. At his word, both he and all the people of Israel will go out and at his word, they will come in.”

Il se présentera devant le sacrificateur Éléazar, qui consultera pour lui le jugement de l'urim devant l'Éternel; et Josué, tous les enfants d'Israël avec lui, et toute l'assemblée, sortiront sur l'ordre d'Éléazar et entreront sur son ordre.

22 M oses did just as the Lord told him. He took Joshua and had him stand in front of Eleazar the religious leader, and in front of all the people.

Moïse fit ce que l'Éternel lui avait ordonné. Il prit Josué, et il le plaça devant le sacrificateur Éléazar et devant toute l'assemblée.

23 T hen he laid his hands on him and gave him the work he must do, just as the Lord had said through Moses.

Il posa ses mains sur lui, et lui donna des ordres, comme l'Éternel l'avait dit par Moïse.
