1 S o the heavens and the earth were completed, and all that is in them.

Ainsi furent achevés les cieux et la terre, et toute leur armée.

2 O n the seventh day God ended His work which He had done. And He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done.

Dieu acheva au septième jour son oeuvre, qu'il avait faite: et il se reposa au septième jour de toute son oeuvre, qu'il avait faite.

3 T hen God honored the seventh day and made it holy, because in it He rested from all His work which He had done. The Garden of Eden

Dieu bénit le septième jour, et il le sanctifia, parce qu'en ce jour il se reposa de toute son oeuvre qu'il avait créée en la faisant.

4 T his is the story of the heavens and the earth when they were made, in the day the Lord God made the earth and the heavens.

Voici les origines des cieux et de la terre, quand ils furent créés.

5 N ow no bush of the field was yet on the earth. And no plant of the field had started to grow. For the Lord God had not sent rain upon the earth. And there was no man to work the ground.

Lorsque l'Éternel Dieu fit une terre et des cieux, aucun arbuste des champs n'était encore sur la terre, et aucune herbe des champs ne germait encore: car l'Éternel Dieu n'avait pas fait pleuvoir sur la terre, et il n'y avait point d'homme pour cultiver le sol.

6 B ut a fog came from the earth and watered the whole top of the ground.

Mais une vapeur s'éleva de la terre, et arrosa toute la surface du sol.

7 T hen the Lord God made man from the dust of the ground. And He breathed into his nose the breath of life. Man became a living being.

L'Éternel Dieu forma l'homme de la poussière de la terre, il souffla dans ses narines un souffle de vie et l'homme devint un être vivant.

8 T he Lord God planted a garden to the east in Eden. He put the man there whom He had made.

Puis l'Éternel Dieu planta un jardin en Éden, du côté de l'orient, et il y mit l'homme qu'il avait formé.

9 A nd the Lord God made to grow out of the ground every tree that is pleasing to the eyes and good for food. And He made the tree of life grow in the center of the garden, and the tree of learning of good and bad.

L'Éternel Dieu fit pousser du sol des arbres de toute espèce, agréables à voir et bons à manger, et l'arbre de la vie au milieu du jardin, et l'arbre de la connaissance du bien et du mal.

10 N ow a river flowed out of Eden to water the garden. And from there it divided and became four rivers.

Un fleuve sortait d'Éden pour arroser le jardin, et de là il se divisait en quatre bras.

11 T he name of the first is Pishon. It flows around the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold.

Le nom du premier est Pischon; c'est celui qui entoure tout le pays de Havila, où se trouve l'or.

12 T he gold of that land is good. Bdellium and onyx stone are there.

L'or de ce pays est pur; on y trouve aussi le bdellium et la pierre d'onyx.

13 T he name of the second river is Gihon. It flows around the whole land of Cush.

Le nom du second fleuve est Guihon; c'est celui qui entoure tout le pays de Cusch.

14 T he name of the third river is Tigris. It flows east of Assyria. And the fourth river is the Euphrates.

Le nom du troisième est Hiddékel; c'est celui qui coule à l'orient de l'Assyrie. Le quatrième fleuve, c'est l'Euphrate.

15 T hen the Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work the ground and care for it.

L'Éternel Dieu prit l'homme, et le plaça dans le jardin d'Éden pour le cultiver et pour le garder.

16 T he Lord God told the man, “You are free to eat from any tree of the garden.

L'Éternel Dieu donna cet ordre à l'homme: Tu pourras manger de tous les arbres du jardin;

17 B ut do not eat from the tree of learning of good and bad. For the day you eat from it you will die for sure.”

mais tu ne mangeras pas de l'arbre de la connaissance du bien et du mal, car le jour où tu en mangeras, tu mourras.

18 T hen the Lord God said, “It is not good for man to be alone. I will make a helper that is right for him.”

L'Éternel Dieu dit: Il n'est pas bon que l'homme soit seul; je lui ferai une aide semblable à lui.

19 O ut of the ground the Lord God made every animal of the field and every bird of the sky. He brought them to the man to find out what he would call them. And whatever the man called a living thing, that was its name.

L'Éternel Dieu forma de la terre tous les animaux des champs et tous les oiseaux du ciel, et il les fit venir vers l'homme, pour voir comment il les appellerait, et afin que tout être vivant portât le nom que lui donnerait l'homme.

20 A dam gave names to all the cattle, and to the birds of the sky, and to every animal of the field. But there was no helper found that was right for Adam.

Et l'homme donna des noms à tout le bétail, aux oiseaux du ciel et à tous les animaux des champs; mais, pour l'homme, il ne trouva point d'aide semblable à lui.

21 S o the Lord God put the man to sleep as if he were dead. And while he was sleeping, He took one of the bones from his side and closed up the place with flesh.

Alors l'Éternel Dieu fit tomber un profond sommeil sur l'homme, qui s'endormit; il prit une de ses côtes, et referma la chair à sa place.

22 T he Lord God made woman from the bone which He had taken from the man. And He brought her to the man.

L'Éternel Dieu forma une femme de la côte qu'il avait prise de l'homme, et il l'amena vers l'homme.

23 T he man said, “This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh. She will be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.”

Et l'homme dit: Voici cette fois celle qui est os de mes os et chair de ma chair! on l'appellera femme, parce qu'elle a été prise de l'homme.

24 F or this reason a man will leave his father and his mother, and will be joined to his wife. And they will become one flesh.

C'est pourquoi l'homme quittera son père et sa mère, et s'attachera à sa femme, et ils deviendront une seule chair.

25 T he man and his wife were both without clothes and were not ashamed.

L'homme et sa femme étaient tous deux nus, et ils n'en avaient point honte.
