Job prit la parole et dit:

2 “ Even today my complaining is bitter. His hand is heavy even when I cry inside myself.

Maintenant encore ma plainte est une révolte, Mais la souffrance étouffe mes soupirs.

3 I f only I knew where to find Him, that I might go where He is!

Oh! si je savais où le trouver, Si je pouvais arriver jusqu'à son trône,

4 I would tell Him how things are with me, and my mouth would be ready to argue.

Je plaiderais ma cause devant lui, Je remplirais ma bouche d'arguments,

5 I would know His answer, and could think about what He would say to me.

Je connaîtrais ce qu'il peut avoir à répondre, Je verrais ce qu'il peut avoir à me dire.

6 W ould He go against me using His great power? No, He would listen to me.

Emploierait-il toute sa force à me combattre? Ne daignerait-il pas au moins m'écouter?

7 T here a man who is right could reason with Him. And I would be set free by my Judge.

Ce serait un homme droit qui plaiderait avec lui, Et je serais pour toujours absous par mon juge.

8 “ See, I go east, but He is not there. I go west, but I cannot see Him.

Mais, si je vais à l'orient, il n'y est pas; Si je vais à l'occident, je ne le trouve pas;

9 W hen He works to the left, I cannot see Him. When He turns to the right, I cannot see Him.

Est-il occupé au nord, je ne puis le voir; Se cache-t-il au midi, je ne puis le découvrir.

10 B ut He knows the way that I take. When He has tried me, I will come out as gold.

Il sait néanmoins quelle voie j'ai suivie; Et, s'il m'éprouvait, je sortirais pur comme l'or.

11 M y foot has kept close to His steps. I have kept His way and have not turned aside.

Mon pied s'est attaché à ses pas; J'ai gardé sa voie, et je ne m'en suis point détourné.

12 I have not turned away from the words of His lips. I have stored up the words of His mouth. They are worth more to me than the food I need.

Je n'ai pas abandonné les commandements de ses lèvres; J'ai fait plier ma volonté aux paroles de sa bouche.

13 B ut He cannot be changed. Who can go against Him? He does whatever He wants.

Mais sa résolution est arrêtée; qui s'y opposera? Ce que son âme désire, il l'exécute.

14 F or He does what He has planned for me, and many such things are in His mind.

Il accomplira donc ses desseins à mon égard, Et il en concevra bien d'autres encore.

15 S o I am afraid to be with Him. When I think about it, I am very afraid of Him.

Voilà pourquoi sa présence m'épouvante; Quand j'y pense, j'ai peur de lui.

16 G od has made my heart weak. The All-powerful has filled me with fear.

Dieu a brisé mon courage, Le Tout Puissant m'a rempli d'effroi.

17 B ut I am not made quiet by the darkness or the deep shadow which covers my face.

Car ce ne sont pas les ténèbres qui m'anéantissent, Ce n'est pas l'obscurité dont je suis couvert.
