1 T hen Jacob looked up and saw Esau coming with 400 men. So he divided the children among Leah and Rachel and the two women who served him.

Jacob leva les yeux, et regarda; et voici, Ésaü arrivait, avec quatre cents hommes. Il répartit les enfants entre Léa, Rachel, et les deux servantes.

2 H e put the women who served him and their children in front, and Leah and her children behind them, and Rachel and Joseph behind them.

Il plaça en tête les servantes avec leurs enfants, puis Léa avec ses enfants, et enfin Rachel avec Joseph.

3 T hen Jacob went before them. He bowed to the ground seven times, until he came near his brother.

Lui-même passa devant eux; et il se prosterna en terre sept fois, jusqu'à ce qu'il fût près de son frère.

4 B ut Esau ran to meet him and put his arms around him and kissed him. And they cried.

Ésaü courut à sa rencontre; il l'embrassa, se jeta à son cou, et le baisa. Et ils pleurèrent.

5 T hen Esau looked up and saw the women and the children. He said, “Who are these with you?” Jacob said, “They are the children whom God, in His loving-favor, has given your servant.”

Ésaü, levant les yeux, vit les femmes et les enfants, et il dit: Qui sont ceux que tu as là? Et Jacob répondit: Ce sont les enfants que Dieu a accordés à ton serviteur.

6 T hen the women who served Jacob came near with their children, and they bowed to the ground.

Les servantes s'approchèrent, elles et leurs enfants, et se prosternèrent;

7 L eah also came near with her children, and they bowed to the ground. Then Joseph and Rachel came near and bowed to the ground.

Léa et ses enfants s'approchèrent aussi, et se prosternèrent; ensuite Joseph et Rachel s'approchèrent, et se prosternèrent.

8 E sau said, “What do you mean by all these animals I have met?” And Jacob said, “They are a gift so I may find favor in the eyes of my lord.”

Ésaü dit: A quoi destines-tu tout ce camp que j'ai rencontré? Et Jacob répondit: A trouver grâce aux yeux de mon seigneur.

9 B ut Esau said, “I have enough, my brother. Keep what you have for yourself.”

Ésaü dit: Je suis dans l'abondance, mon frère; garde ce qui est à toi.

10 B ut Jacob said, “No, I ask of you, if I have found favor in your eyes, then receive my gift. For I see your face as one sees the face of God. You have received me with favor.

Et Jacob répondit: Non, je te prie, si j'ai trouvé grâce à tes yeux, accepte de ma main mon présent; car c'est pour cela que j'ai regardé ta face comme on regarde la face de Dieu, et tu m'as accueilli favorablement.

11 T ake my gift that has been brought to you. For God has shown loving-kindness to me, and I have all I need.” So he begged him until he took it.

Accepte donc mon présent qui t'a été offert, puisque Dieu m'a comblé de grâces, et que je ne manque de rien. Il insista auprès de lui, et Ésaü accepta.

12 T hen Esau said, “Let us be on our way. I will go with you.”

Ésaü dit: Partons, mettons-nous en route; j'irai devant toi.

13 B ut Jacob said to him, “My lord knows that the children are weak. And there are young ones in my flocks that need milk. If they are made to go a long way in one day, all the flocks will die.

Jacob lui répondit: Mon seigneur sait que les enfants sont délicats, et que j'ai des brebis et des vaches qui allaitent; si l'on forçait leur marche un seul jour, tout le troupeau périrait.

14 L et my lord go in front of his servant. And I will be slow in coming to my lord at Seir. I will go as fast as the cattle in front of me and as the children are able.”

Que mon seigneur prenne les devants sur son serviteur; et moi, je suivrai lentement, au pas du troupeau qui me précédera, et au pas des enfants, jusqu'à ce que j'arrive chez mon seigneur, à Séir.

15 S o Esau said, “Let me leave with you some of the people who are with me.” But Jacob said, “What need is there? Let me find favor in the eyes of my lord.”

Ésaü dit: Je veux au moins laisser avec toi une partie de mes gens. Et Jacob répondit: Pourquoi cela? Que je trouve seulement grâce aux yeux de mon seigneur!

16 S o Esau returned that day on his way to Seir.

Le même jour, Ésaü reprit le chemin de Séir.

17 B ut Jacob traveled to Succoth. He built his house there, and put up small buildings for his animals. So the name of the place is Succoth.

Jacob partit pour Succoth. Il bâtit une maison pour lui, et il fit des cabanes pour ses troupeaux. C'est pourquoi l'on a appelé ce lieu de nom de Succoth.

18 N ow Jacob came in peace from Paddan-aram to the city of Shechem in the land of Canaan. And he put up his tents near the city.

A son retour de Paddan Aram, Jacob arriva heureusement à la ville de Sichem, dans le pays de Canaan, et il campa devant la ville.

19 H e bought the piece of land where he had put up his tents for one hundred pieces of money from the sons of Hamor, Shechem’s father.

Il acheta la portion du champ où il avait dressé sa tente, des fils d'Hamor, père de Sichem, pour cent kesita.

20 H e built an altar there, and gave it the name El-Elohe-Israel.

Et là, il éleva un autel, qu'il appela El Élohé Israël.
