Dans la bouche de l'insensé est une verge pour son orgueil, Mais les lèvres des sages les gardent.

4 T here is no grain where there are no oxen, but much grain comes by the strength of the ox.

S'il n'y a pas de boeufs, la crèche est vide; C'est à la vigueur des boeufs qu'on doit l'abondance des revenus.

5 A faithful man who tells what he knows will not lie, but the man who is not faithful will lie.

Un témoin fidèle ne ment pas, Mais un faux témoin dit des mensonges.

6 O ne who laughs at the truth looks for wisdom and does not find it, but much learning is easy to him who has understanding.

Le moqueur cherche la sagesse et ne la trouve pas, Mais pour l'homme intelligent la science est chose facile.

7 G o away from a foolish man, for you will not find words of much learning.

Éloigne-toi de l'insensé; Ce n'est pas sur ses lèvres que tu aperçois la science.

8 T he wisdom of the wise man is to understand what to do, but lying is the foolish way of fools.

La sagesse de l'homme prudent, c'est l'intelligence de sa voie; La folie des insensés, c'est la tromperie.

9 F ools laugh at sin, but the favor of God is among the faithful.

Les insensés se font un jeu du péché, Mais parmi les hommes droits se trouve la bienveillance.

Le coeur connaît ses propres chagrins, Et un étranger ne saurait partager sa joie.

11 T he house of the sinful will be destroyed, but all will go well in the tent of the faithful.

La maison des méchants sera détruite, Mais la tente des hommes droits fleurira.

12 T here is a way which looks right to a man, but its end is the way of death.

Telle voie paraît droite à un homme, Mais son issue, c'est la voie de la mort.

13 E ven while laughing the heart may be in pain, and the end of joy may be sorrow.

Au milieu même du rire le coeur peut être affligé, Et la joie peut finir par la détresse.

14 T he man who has gone back into sin will get the fruit of his ways, and a good man will get the fruit of what he does.

Celui dont le coeur s'égare se rassasie de ses voies, Et l'homme de bien se rassasie de ce qui est en lui.

L'homme simple croit tout ce qu'on dit, Mais l'homme prudent est attentif à ses pas.

16 A wise man fears God and turns away from what is sinful, but a fool is full of pride and is not careful.

Le sage a de la retenue et se détourne du mal, Mais l'insensé est arrogant et plein de sécurité.

17 H e who has a quick temper acts in a foolish way, and a man who makes sinful plans is hated.

Celui qui est prompt à la colère fait des sottises, Et l'homme plein de malice s'attire la haine.

18 T hose who are easy to fool are foolish, but the wise have much learning.

Les simples ont en partage la folie, Et les hommes prudents se font de la science une couronne.

19 S inful men will bow in front of the good, and at the gates of those who are right with God.

Les mauvais s'inclinent devant les bons, Et les méchants aux portes du juste.

20 T he poor man is hated even by his neighbor, but the rich man has many friends.

Le pauvre est odieux même à son ami, Mais les amis du riche sont nombreux.

Celui qui craint l'Éternel possède un appui ferme, Et ses enfants ont un refuge auprès de lui.

27 T he fear of the Lord is a well of life. Its waters keep a man from death.

La crainte de l'Éternel est une source de vie, Pour détourner des pièges de la mort.

28 T he shining-greatness of a king is in many people, but without people a prince has nothing.

Quand le peuple est nombreux, c'est la gloire d'un roi; Quand le peuple manque, c'est la ruine du prince.

29 H e who is slow to get angry has great understanding, but he who has a quick temper makes his foolish way look right.

Dans un coeur intelligent repose la sagesse, Mais au milieu des insensés elle se montre à découvert.

34 B eing right with God makes a nation great, but sin is a shame to any people.

La justice élève une nation, Mais le péché est la honte des peuples.

35 T he king’s favor is toward a wise servant, but his anger is toward the one who brings shame by what he does.

La faveur du roi est pour le serviteur prudent, Et sa colère pour celui qui fait honte.
