1 A nd the Canaanite king of Arad, who dwelt in the south, heard that Israel came by the way of Atharim, and he fought against Israel, and took some of them prisoners.

The Canaanite, the king of Arad, who lived in the Negev, heard that Israel was coming by the way of Atharim. He fought against Israel, and took some of them against their will.

2 T hen Israel vowed a vow to Jehovah, and said, If thou give this people wholly into my hand, then I will utterly destroy their cities.

So Israel made a promise to the Lord, and said, “If You will give this people into my hand, I will destroy every part of their cities.”

3 A nd Jehovah listened to the voice of Israel, and delivered up the Canaanites; and they utterly destroyed them, and their cities. And they called the name of the place Hormah.

The Lord heard the voice of Israel, and gave them the Canaanites. Then Israel destroyed all of them and their cities. So the name of the place was called Hormah. The Brass Snake

4 A nd they journeyed from mount Hor by the way of the Red sea, to go round the land of Edom; and the soul of the people became impatient on the way;

Then they traveled from Mount Hor by the way of the Red Sea, to go around the land of Edom. And the people wanted to give up because of the long way.

5 a nd the people spoke against God, and against Moses, Why have ye brought us up out of Egypt that we should die in the wilderness? for there is no bread, and no water, and our soul loathes this light bread.

They spoke against God and Moses, saying, “Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the desert? For there is no food and no water. And we hate this bad food.”

6 T hen Jehovah sent fiery serpents among the people, which bit the people; and much people of Israel died.

Then the Lord sent snakes with a bite of poison among the people. They bit the people, so that many people of Israel died.

7 A nd the people came to Moses and said, We have sinned, in that we have spoken against Jehovah, and against thee: pray to Jehovah that he take away the serpents from us. And Moses prayed for the people.

So the people came to Moses and said, “We have sinned, because we have spoken against the Lord and you. Pray to the Lord, that He will take away the snakes from us.” So Moses prayed for the people.

8 A nd Jehovah said to Moses, Make thee a fiery, and set it upon a pole; and it shall come to pass, that every one that is bitten, and looketh upon it, shall live.

The Lord said to Moses, “Make a special snake and put it up on a long piece of wood. Everyone who is bitten will live when he looks at it.”

9 A nd Moses made a serpent of brass, and put it upon a pole; and it came to pass, if a serpent had bitten any man, and he beheld the serpent of brass, he lived.

So Moses made a brass snake and put it up on the long piece of wood. If a snake bit any man, he would live when he looked at the brass snake. From Mount Hor to Moab

10 A nd the children of Israel journeyed, and encamped in Oboth.

The people of Israel traveled on, and set up their tents in Oboth.

11 A nd they removed from Oboth, and encamped at Ijim-Abarim, in the wilderness that is before Moab, toward the sun-rising.

Then they left Oboth and stopped at Iye-abarim, in the desert beside Moab, to the east.

12 F rom thence they removed, and encamped at the torrent Zered.

From there they traveled on to Wadi Zered.

13 F rom thence they removed, and encamped on the other side of the Arnon, which is in the wilderness that comes out of the border of the Amorites. For the Arnon is the border of Moab, between Moab and the Amorites.

And from there they traveled on and set up their tents on the other side of the Arnon. It is in the desert that goes out from the land of the Amorites. For the Arnon is the side of Moab, between Moab and the Amorites.

14 T herefore it is said in the book of the wars of Jehovah, Vaheb in Suphah, and the brooks of Arnon;

So it is said in the Book of the Wars of the Lord: “Waheb in Suphah, and the valleys of the Arnon,

15 A nd the stream of the brooks which turneth to the dwelling of Ar, And inclineth toward the border of Moab.

and the hill-side of the valleys that goes to the place of Ar, and rests on the side of Moab.”

16 A nd from thence to Beer: that is the well of which Jehovah spoke to Moses, Assemble the people, and I will give them water.

From there they went on to Beer. That is the well where the Lord said to Moses, “Gather the people together, so I may give them water.”

17 T hen Israel sang this song, Rise up, well! sing unto it:

Then Israel sang this song: “Come up, O well! Sing to it!

18 W ell which princes digged, which the nobles of the people hollowed out at the lawgiver, with their staves. And from the wilderness to Mattanah;

The well, which the leaders dug, which the rulers of the people dug, with the special stick of power and with their walking sticks.” From the desert they went on to Mattanah.

19 a nd from Mattanah to Nahaliel; and from Nahaliel to Bamoth;

From Mattanah they went to Nahaliel, and from Nahaliel to Bamoth.

20 a nd from Bamoth to the valley that is in the fields of Moab, to the top of Pisgah, which looks over the surface of the waste.

From Bamoth they went to the valley in the land of Moab, at the top of Pisgah which looks down upon the desert. Battle with Amorites

21 A nd Israel sent messengers to Sihon king of the Amorites, saying,

Then Israel sent men to Sihon king of the Amorites, saying,

22 L et us pass through thy land; we will not turn into the fields, or into the vineyards; we will not drink water out of the wells; on the king's road will we go until we have passed thy border.

“Let me pass through your land. We will not turn aside into field or vines. We will not drink water from wells. We will go on the king’s road until we have passed through your country.”

23 B ut Sihon would not suffer Israel to go through his border; and Sihon gathered all his people, and went out against Israel into the wilderness, and came to Jahaz, and fought against Israel.

But Sihon would not let Israel pass through his country. He gathered all his people and went out against Israel in the desert. He came to Jahaz and fought against Israel.

24 A nd Israel smote him with the edge of the sword, and took possession of his land from the Arnon to the Jabbok, even unto the children of Ammon; for the border of the children of Ammon was strong.

Then Israel killed Sihon with the sword. They took his land from the Arnon to the Jabbok, as far as the people of Ammon. For Jazer was the side of the land of the Ammonites.

25 A nd Israel took all these cities, and Israel dwelt in all the cities of the Amorites, at Heshbon, and in all its dependent villages.

Israel took all these cities. They lived in all the cities of the Amorites, in Heshbon, and in all its towns.

26 F or Heshbon was the city of Sihon the king of the Amorites; and he had fought against the former king of Moab, and had taken all his land out of his hand, even unto the Arnon.

For Heshbon was the city of Sihon king of the Amorites. He had fought against the man who was once the king of Moab, and had taken all his land as far as the Arnon.

27 T herefore the poets say, Come to Heshbon; let the city of Sihon be built and established.

So those who use wise sayings say, “Come to Heshbon! Let it be built! Let the city of Sihon be built.

28 F or there went forth fire from Heshbon, a flame from the city of Sihon; It consumed Ar of Moab, the lords of the high places of the Arnon.

For a fire went out from Heshbon, fire from the city of Sihon. It burned up Ar of Moab, and the lords of the high places of the Arnon.

29 W oe to thee, Moab! thou art undone, people of Chemosh: He gave his sons that had escaped, and his daughters into captivity to Sihon the king of the Amorites.

It is bad for you, O Moab! You are destroyed, O people of Chemosh! His sons run for their lives. His daughters have been taken against their will by an Amorite king, Sihon.

30 A nd we have shot at them; Heshbon is perished even unto Dibon; and we have laid waste even unto Nophah, which reacheth unto Medeba.

But we have put them down. Heshbon is destroyed as far as Dibon. We have destroyed even to Nophah, which goes to Medeba.”

31 A nd Israel dwelt in the land of the Amorites.

So Israel lived in the land of the Amorites.

32 A nd Moses sent to spy out Jaazer, and they took its dependent villages, and he dispossessed the Amorites that were there.

Then Moses sent men to spy out Jazer in secret. And Israel took its towns and took the place of the Amorites who were there. King Og Killed

33 A nd they turned and went up by the way to Bashan; and Og the king of Bashan went out against them, he and all his people, for battle to Edrei.

Then they turned and went up by the way of Bashan. Og the king of Bashan went out with all his people to battle at Edrei.

34 A nd Jehovah said to Moses, Fear him not! for into thy hand have I given him, and all his people, and his land; and thou shalt do to him as thou didst unto Sihon the king of the Amorites, who dwelt at Heshbon.

But the Lord said to Moses, “Do not be afraid of him. For I have given him into your hand, with all his people and his land. Do to him as you did to Sihon king of the Amorites who lived at Heshbon.”

35 A nd they smote him, and his sons, and all his people, so that they left him none remaining, and took possession of his land.

So the people of Israel killed Og and his sons and all his people, until there was not one left alive. And they took his land.
