1 N ow before the feast of the passover, Jesus, knowing that his hour had come that he should depart out of this world to the Father, having loved his own who were in the world, loved them to the end.
It was before the special religious gathering to remember how the Jews left Egypt. Jesus knew the time had come for Him to leave this world and go to the Father. He had loved His own who were in the world. He loved them to the end.
2 A nd during supper, the devil having already put it into the heart of Judas of Simon, Iscariote, that he should deliver him up,
He and His followers were having supper. Satan had put the thought into the heart of Judas Iscariot of handing Jesus over to the leaders of the country.
3 k nowing that the Father had given him all things into his hands, and that he came out from God and was going to God,
Jesus knew the Father had put everything into His hands. He knew He had come from God and was going back to God.
4 r ises from supper and lays aside his garments, and having taken a linen towel he girded himself:
Jesus got up from the supper and took off His coat. He picked up a cloth and put it around Him.
5 t hen he pours water into the washhand basin, and began to wash the feet of the disciples, and to wipe them with the linen towel with which he was girded.
Then He put water into a wash pan and began to wash the feet of His followers. He dried their feet with the cloth He had put around Himself. Peter Speaks Out against Jesus Washing His Feet
6 H e comes therefore to Simon Peter; and he says to him, Lord, dost thou wash my feet?
Jesus came to Simon Peter. Peter said to Him, “Lord, are You going to wash my feet?”
7 J esus answered and said to him, What I do thou dost not know now, but thou shalt know hereafter.
Jesus answered him, “You do not understand now what I am doing but you will later.”
8 P eter says to him, Thou shalt never wash my feet. Jesus answered him, Unless I wash thee, thou hast not part with me.
Peter said to Him, “I will never let You wash my feet.” Jesus said, “Unless I wash you, you will not be a part of Me.”
9 S imon Peter says to him, Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head.
Simon Peter said to Him, “Lord, do not wash only my feet, but wash my hands and my head also.”
10 J esus says to him, He that is washed all over needs not to wash save his feet, but is wholly clean; and ye are clean, but not all.
Jesus said to him, “Anyone who has washed his body needs only to wash his feet. Then he is clean all over. You are all clean except one.”
11 F or he knew him that delivered him up: on account of this he said, Ye are not all clean.
Jesus knew who was going to hand Him over to the leaders. That is why He said, “You are all clean except one.” Jesus Tells Why He Washed Their Feet
12 W hen therefore he had washed their feet, and taken his garments, having sat down again, he said to them, Do ye know what I have done to you?
Jesus washed their feet and put on His coat. Then He sat down again and said to them, “Do you understand what I have done to you?
13 Y e call me the Teacher and the Lord, and ye say well, for I am.
You call Me Teacher and Lord. You are right because that is what I am.
14 I f I therefore, the Lord and the Teacher, have washed your feet, ye also ought to wash one another's feet;
I am your Teacher and Lord. I have washed your feet. You should wash each other’s feet also.
15 f or I have given you an example that, as I have done to you, ye should do also.
I have done this to show you what should be done. You should do as I have done to you.
16 V erily, verily, I say to you, The bondman is not greater than his lord, nor the sent greater than he who has sent him.
For sure, I tell you, a workman who is owned by someone is not greater than his owner. One who is sent is not greater than the one who sent him.
17 I f ye know these things, blessed are ye if ye do them.
If you know these things, you will be happy if you do them.
18 I speak not of you all. I know those whom I have chosen; but that the scripture might be fulfilled, He that eats bread with me has lifted up his heel against me.
“I am not speaking about all of you. I know the ones I have chosen. What is written in the Holy Writings must happen. It says, ‘The man who eats bread with Me has turned against Me.’
19 I tell you now before it happens, that when it happens, ye may believe that I am.
I tell you this now before it happens. After it happens, you will believe that I am Who I say I am, the Christ.
20 V erily, verily, I say to you, He who receives whomsoever I shall send receives me; and he that receives me receives him who has sent me.
For sure, I tell you, he who receives the one I send out, receives Me. He who receives Me receives Him who sent Me.” Jesus Tells of the One Who Will Hand Him Over to the Leaders
21 H aving said these things, Jesus was troubled in spirit, and testified and said, Verily, verily, I say to you, that one of you shall deliver me up.
When Jesus had said this, He was troubled in heart. He told them in very plain words, saying, “For sure, I tell you, one of you is going to hand Me over to the leaders of the country.”
22 T he disciples therefore looked one on another, doubting of whom he spoke.
The followers began to look at each other. They did not know which one He was speaking of.
23 N ow there was at table one of his disciples in the bosom of Jesus, whom Jesus loved.
One follower, whom Jesus loved, was beside Jesus.
24 S imon Peter makes a sign therefore to him to ask who it might be of whom he spoke.
Simon Peter got this follower to look his way. He wanted him to ask Jesus which one He was speaking of.
25 B ut he, leaning on the breast of Jesus, says to him, Lord, who is it?
While close beside Jesus, he asked, “Lord, who is it?”
26 J esus answers, He it is to whom I, after I have dipped the morsel, give it. And having dipped the morsel, he gives it to Judas of Simon, Iscariote.
Jesus answered, “It is the one I give this piece of bread to after I have put it in the dish.” Then He put the bread in the dish and gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon.
27 A nd, after the morsel, then entered Satan into him. Jesus therefore says to him, What thou doest, do quickly.
After Judas had eaten the piece of bread, Satan went into him. Jesus said to Judas, “What you are going to do, do in a hurry.”
28 B ut none of those at table knew why he said this to him;
No one at the supper knew why Jesus had said this to Judas.
29 f or some supposed, because Judas had the bag, that Jesus was saying to him, Buy the things of which we have need for the feast; or that he should give something to the poor.
They thought it was because Judas carried the bag of money, and Jesus had said that Judas should buy what they needed for the religious gathering. Or they thought Judas should give something to poor people.
30 H aving therefore received the morsel, he went out immediately; and it was night.
As soon as Judas had taken the piece of bread, he went out. It was night. Love—the Greatest Law
31 W hen therefore he was gone out Jesus says, Now is the Son of man glorified, and God is glorified in him.
After Judas went out, Jesus said, “The Son of Man is now honored and God has been honored in Him.
32 I f God be glorified in him, God also shall glorify him in himself, and shall glorify him immediately.
If God is honored in Him, God will also honor Him in Himself right now.
33 C hildren, yet a little while I am with you. Ye shall seek me; and, as I said to the Jews, Where I go ye cannot come, I say to you also now.
Little children, I will be with you only a little while. You will look for Me. I say to you what I said to the Jews, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come!’
34 A new commandment I give to you, that ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.
I give you a new Law. You are to love each other. You must love each other as I have loved you.
35 B y this shall all know that ye are disciples of mine, if ye have love amongst yourselves.
If you love each other, all men will know you are My followers.” Jesus Tells How Peter Will Lie about Him
36 S imon Peter says to him, Lord, where goest thou? Jesus answered him, Where I go thou canst not follow me now, but thou shalt follow me after.
Simon Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, where are You going?” Jesus answered, “You cannot follow Me now where I am going. Later you will follow Me.”
37 P eter says to him, Lord, why cannot I follow thee now? I will lay down my life for thee.
Peter said to Jesus, “Why can I not follow You now? I will die for You.”
38 J esus answers, Thou wilt lay down thy life for me! Verily, verily, I say to thee, The cock shall not crow till thou hast denied me thrice.
Jesus answered Peter, “Will you die for Me? For sure, I tell you, before a rooster crows, you will have said three times that you do not know Me.”
