1 N ow before the feast of the Passover, Jesus, knowing that his time had come that he would depart from this world to the Father, having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.

It was before the special religious gathering to remember how the Jews left Egypt. Jesus knew the time had come for Him to leave this world and go to the Father. He had loved His own who were in the world. He loved them to the end.

2 D uring supper, the devil having already put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, to betray him,

He and His followers were having supper. Satan had put the thought into the heart of Judas Iscariot of handing Jesus over to the leaders of the country.

3 J esus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he came from God, and was going to God,

Jesus knew the Father had put everything into His hands. He knew He had come from God and was going back to God.

4 a rose from supper, and laid aside his outer garments. He took a towel, and wrapped a towel around his waist.

Jesus got up from the supper and took off His coat. He picked up a cloth and put it around Him.

5 T hen he poured water into the basin, and began to wash the disciples’ feet, and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him.

Then He put water into a wash pan and began to wash the feet of His followers. He dried their feet with the cloth He had put around Himself. Peter Speaks Out against Jesus Washing His Feet

6 T hen he came to Simon Peter. He said to him, “Lord, do you wash my feet?”

Jesus came to Simon Peter. Peter said to Him, “Lord, are You going to wash my feet?”

7 J esus answered him, “You don’t know what I am doing now, but you will understand later.”

Jesus answered him, “You do not understand now what I am doing but you will later.”

8 P eter said to him, “You will never wash my feet!” Jesus answered him, “If I don’t wash you, you have no part with me.”

Peter said to Him, “I will never let You wash my feet.” Jesus said, “Unless I wash you, you will not be a part of Me.”

9 S imon Peter said to him, “Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head!”

Simon Peter said to Him, “Lord, do not wash only my feet, but wash my hands and my head also.”

10 J esus said to him, “Someone who has bathed only needs to have his feet washed, but is completely clean. You are clean, but not all of you.”

Jesus said to him, “Anyone who has washed his body needs only to wash his feet. Then he is clean all over. You are all clean except one.”

11 F or he knew him who would betray him, therefore he said, “You are not all clean.”

Jesus knew who was going to hand Him over to the leaders. That is why He said, “You are all clean except one.” Jesus Tells Why He Washed Their Feet

12 S o when he had washed their feet, put his outer garment back on, and sat down again, he said to them, “Do you know what I have done to you?

Jesus washed their feet and put on His coat. Then He sat down again and said to them, “Do you understand what I have done to you?

13 Y ou call me, ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord.’ You say so correctly, for so I am.

You call Me Teacher and Lord. You are right because that is what I am.

14 I f I then, the Lord and the Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet.

I am your Teacher and Lord. I have washed your feet. You should wash each other’s feet also.

15 F or I have given you an example, that you also should do as I have done to you.

I have done this to show you what should be done. You should do as I have done to you.

16 M ost certainly I tell you, a servant is not greater than his lord, neither one who is sent greater than he who sent him.

For sure, I tell you, a workman who is owned by someone is not greater than his owner. One who is sent is not greater than the one who sent him.

17 I f you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.

If you know these things, you will be happy if you do them.

18 I don’t speak concerning all of you. I know whom I have chosen. But that the Scripture may be fulfilled, ‘He who eats bread with me has lifted up his heel against me.’

“I am not speaking about all of you. I know the ones I have chosen. What is written in the Holy Writings must happen. It says, ‘The man who eats bread with Me has turned against Me.’

19 F rom now on, I tell you before it happens, that when it happens, you may believe that I am he.

I tell you this now before it happens. After it happens, you will believe that I am Who I say I am, the Christ.

20 M ost certainly I tell you, he who receives whomever I send, receives me; and he who receives me, receives him who sent me.”

For sure, I tell you, he who receives the one I send out, receives Me. He who receives Me receives Him who sent Me.” Jesus Tells of the One Who Will Hand Him Over to the Leaders

21 W hen Jesus had said this, he was troubled in spirit, and testified, “Most certainly I tell you that one of you will betray me.”

When Jesus had said this, He was troubled in heart. He told them in very plain words, saying, “For sure, I tell you, one of you is going to hand Me over to the leaders of the country.”

22 T he disciples looked at one another, perplexed about whom he spoke.

The followers began to look at each other. They did not know which one He was speaking of.

23 O ne of his disciples, whom Jesus loved, was at the table, leaning against Jesus’ breast.

One follower, whom Jesus loved, was beside Jesus.

24 S imon Peter therefore beckoned to him, and said to him, “Tell us who it is of whom he speaks.”

Simon Peter got this follower to look his way. He wanted him to ask Jesus which one He was speaking of.

25 H e, leaning back, as he was, on Jesus’ breast, asked him, “Lord, who is it?”

While close beside Jesus, he asked, “Lord, who is it?”

26 J esus therefore answered, “It is he to whom I will give this piece of bread when I have dipped it.” So when he had dipped the piece of bread, he gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot.

Jesus answered, “It is the one I give this piece of bread to after I have put it in the dish.” Then He put the bread in the dish and gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon.

27 A fter the piece of bread, then Satan entered into him. Then Jesus said to him, “What you do, do quickly.”

After Judas had eaten the piece of bread, Satan went into him. Jesus said to Judas, “What you are going to do, do in a hurry.”

28 N ow no man at the table knew why he said this to him.

No one at the supper knew why Jesus had said this to Judas.

29 F or some thought, because Judas had the money box, that Jesus said to him, “Buy what things we need for the feast,” or that he should give something to the poor.

They thought it was because Judas carried the bag of money, and Jesus had said that Judas should buy what they needed for the religious gathering. Or they thought Judas should give something to poor people.

30 T herefore having received that morsel, he went out immediately. It was night.

As soon as Judas had taken the piece of bread, he went out. It was night. Love—the Greatest Law

31 W hen he had gone out, Jesus said, “Now the Son of Man has been glorified, and God has been glorified in him.

After Judas went out, Jesus said, “The Son of Man is now honored and God has been honored in Him.

32 I f God has been glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself, and he will glorify him immediately.

If God is honored in Him, God will also honor Him in Himself right now.

33 L ittle children, I will be with you a little while longer. You will seek me, and as I said to the Jews, ‘Where I am going, you can’t come,’ so now I tell you.

Little children, I will be with you only a little while. You will look for Me. I say to you what I said to the Jews, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come!’

34 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also love one another.

I give you a new Law. You are to love each other. You must love each other as I have loved you.

35 B y this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

If you love each other, all men will know you are My followers.” Jesus Tells How Peter Will Lie about Him

36 S imon Peter said to him, “Lord, where are you going?” Jesus answered, “Where I am going, you can’t follow now, but you will follow afterwards.”

Simon Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, where are You going?” Jesus answered, “You cannot follow Me now where I am going. Later you will follow Me.”

37 P eter said to him, “Lord, why can’t I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.”

Peter said to Jesus, “Why can I not follow You now? I will die for You.”

38 J esus answered him, “Will you lay down your life for me? Most certainly I tell you, the rooster won’t crow until you have denied me three times.

Jesus answered Peter, “Will you die for Me? For sure, I tell you, before a rooster crows, you will have said three times that you do not know Me.”
