1 W hen Israel went out of Egypt, the house of Jacob from a people of foreign language;
Israel came out of Egypt. The house of Jacob came from a people who spoke a strange language.
2 J udah became his sanctuary, Israel his dominion.
Then Judah became His holy place, and Israel became the place of His rule.
3 T he sea saw it, and fled. The Jordan was driven back.
The sea looked and ran away. The Jordan turned back.
4 T he mountains skipped like rams, the little hills like lambs.
The mountains jumped like sheep, the hills like lambs.
5 W hat was it, you sea, that you fled? You Jordan, that you turned back?
Why did you try to get away, O sea? Why did you turn back, O Jordan?
6 Y ou mountains, that you skipped like rams; you little hills, like lambs?
O mountains, why did you jump like sheep? O hills, why did you jump like lambs?
7 T remble, you earth, at the presence of the Lord, at the presence of the God of Jacob,
Shake in fear before the Lord, O earth, before the God of Jacob.
8 w ho turned the rock into a pool of water, the flint into a spring of waters.
He changed the rock into a pool of water. He made water flow out of hard rock.
