1 I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth have passed away, and the sea is no more.

Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth. The first heaven and the first earth had passed away. There was no more sea.

2 I saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared like a bride adorned for her husband.

I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem. It was coming down out of heaven from God. It was made ready like a bride is made ready for her husband.

3 I heard a loud voice out of heaven saying, “Behold, God’s dwelling is with people, and he will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God.

I heard a loud voice coming from heaven. It said, “See! God’s home is with men. He will live with them. They will be His people. God Himself will be with them. He will be their God.

4 H e will wipe away from them every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; neither will there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain, any more. The first things have passed away.”

God will take away all their tears. There will be no more death or sorrow or crying or pain. All the old things have passed away.”

5 H e who sits on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.” He said, “Write, for these words of God are faithful and true.”

Then the One sitting on the throne said, “See! I am making all things new. Write, for these words are true and faithful.”

6 H e said to me, “It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. I will give freely to him who is thirsty from the spring of the water of life.

Then He said to me, “These things have happened! I am the First and the Last. I am the beginning and the end. To anyone who is thirsty, I will give the water of life. It is a free gift.

7 H e who overcomes, I will give him these things. I will be his God, and he will be my son.

He who has power and wins will receive these things. I will be his God and he will be My son.

8 B ut for the cowardly, unbelieving, sinners, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their part is in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death.”

But those who are afraid and those who do not have faith and the sinful-minded people and those who kill other people and those who do sex sins and those who follow witchcraft and those who worship false gods and all those who tell lies will be put into the lake of fire and sulphur. This is the second death.” The New Jerusalem

9 O ne of the seven angels who had the seven bowls, who were loaded with the seven last plagues came, and he spoke with me, saying, “Come here. I will show you the wife, the Lamb’s bride.”

Then one of the seven angels who had the seven jars full of the seven last troubles came to me and said, “Come! I will show you the bride, the wife of the Lamb.”

10 H e carried me away in the Spirit to a great and high mountain, and showed me the holy city, Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God,

I was carried away in the Spirit by the angel to a very high mountain. He showed me the Holy City of Jerusalem. It was coming out of heaven from God.

11 h aving the glory of God. Her light was like a most precious stone, as if it were a jasper stone, clear as crystal;

It was filled with the shining-greatness of God. It shone like a stone worth much money, like a jasper stone. It was clear like glass.

12 h aving a great and high wall; having twelve gates, and at the gates twelve angels; and names written on them, which are the names of the twelve tribes of the children of Israel.

It had a very high wall, and there were twelve gates. Twelve angels stood by the gates. The names of the twelve family groups of the Jewish nation were written on the gates.

13 O n the east were three gates; and on the north three gates; and on the south three gates; and on the west three gates.

There were three gates on each side. There were three on the east side and three on the north side and three on the south side and three on the west side.

14 T he wall of the city had twelve foundations, and on them twelve names of the twelve Apostles of the Lamb.

The walls were on twelve stones. The names of the twelve missionaries of the Lamb were written on the stones.

15 H e who spoke with me had for a measure, a golden reed, to measure the city, its gates, and its walls.

The angel had a stick in his hand. It was used to find out how big the city and its gates and the walls were.

16 T he city is square, and its length is as great as its width. He measured the city with the reed, twelve thousand twelve stadia. Its length, width, and height are equal.

He found out that the city was as wide as it was long and it was as high as it was wide. It was as long as a man could walk in fifty days. It was the same each way.

17 I ts wall is one hundred forty-four cubits, by the measure of a man, that is, of an angel.

The angel found out that the walls were the same as a man taking seventy-two long steps. The angel used the same way to find out about the city as a man would have used.

18 T he construction of its wall was jasper. The city was pure gold, like pure glass.

The wall was made of jasper. The city was made of pure gold. This gold was as clear as glass.

19 T he foundations of the city’s wall were adorned with all kinds of precious stones. The first foundation was jasper; the second, sapphire; the third, chalcedony; the fourth, emerald;

The city was built on every kind of stone that was worth much money. The first stone was jasper. The second was sapphire. The third was chalcedony. The fourth was emerald.

20 t he fifth, sardonyx; the sixth, sardius; the seventh, chrysolite; the eighth, beryl; the ninth, topaz; the tenth, chrysoprasus; the eleventh, jacinth; and the twelfth, amethyst.

The fifth was sardonyx. The sixth was sardius. The seventh was chrysolite. The eighth was beryl. The ninth was topaz. The tenth was chrysoprase. The eleventh was jacinth and the twelfth was amethyst.

21 T he twelve gates were twelve pearls. Each one of the gates was made of one pearl. The street of the city was pure gold, like transparent glass.

The twelve gates were twelve pearls. Each gate was made from one pearl. The street of the city was pure gold. It was as clear as glass.

22 I saw no temple in it, for the Lord God, the Almighty, and the Lamb, are its temple.

I did not see a house of God in the city. The All-powerful Lord God and the Lamb are the house of God in this city.

23 T he city has no need for the sun, neither of the moon, to shine, for the very glory of God illuminated it, and its lamp is the Lamb.

There is no need for the sun and moon to shine in the city. The shining-greatness of God makes it full of light. The Lamb is its light.

24 T he nations will walk in its light. The kings of the earth bring the glory and honor of the nations into it.

The nations will walk by its light. The kings of the earth will bring their greatness into it.

25 I ts gates will in no way be shut by day (for there will be no night there),

The gates are open all day. They will never be shut. There will be no night there.

26 a nd they shall bring the glory and the honor of the nations into it so that they may enter.

The greatness and honor of all the nations will be brought into it.

27 T here will in no way enter into it anything profane, or one who causes an abomination or a lie, but only those who are written in the Lamb’s book of life.

Nothing sinful will go into the city. No one who is sinful-minded or tells lies can go in. Only those whose names are written in the Lamb’s book of life can go in.
