1 J oseph was brought down to Egypt. Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh’s, the captain of the guard, an Egyptian, bought him from the hand of the Ishmaelites that had brought him down there.

Now Joseph had been taken down to Egypt by the Ishmaelites. And Potiphar, an Egyptian leader, the head of the soldiers of Pharaoh’s house, bought him from the Ishmaelites.

2 Y ahweh was with Joseph, and he was a prosperous man. He was in the house of his master the Egyptian.

The Lord was with Joseph, and all went well with him. He was in the house of his boss the Egyptian.

3 H is master saw that Yahweh was with him, and that Yahweh made all that he did prosper in his hand.

Now his boss saw that the Lord was with him. He saw how the Lord made all that Joseph did go well.

4 J oseph found favor in his sight. He ministered to him, and he made him overseer over his house, and all that he had he put into his hand.

So Joseph found favor in his eyes, and worked only for him. Potiphar made him the one to watch over his house and take care of all that he owned.

5 F rom the time that he made him overseer in his house, and over all that he had, Yahweh blessed the Egyptian’s house for Joseph’s sake. Yahweh’s blessing was on all that he had, in the house and in the field.

And from the time that he watched over his house and all he owned, the Lord brought good to the Egyptian’s house because of Joseph. The Lord brought good upon all that he owned in the house and in the field.

6 H e left all that he had in Joseph’s hand. He didn’t concern himself with anything, except for the food which he ate. Joseph was well-built and handsome.

So he put all he owned in Joseph’s care. Having Joseph near, he did not need to think about anything but the food he ate. Now Joseph was strong and good-looking.

7 A fter these things, his master’s wife set her eyes on Joseph; and she said, “Lie with me.”

The time came when his boss’s wife saw him, and she said, “Lie with me.”

8 B ut he refused, and said to his master’s wife, “Behold, my master doesn’t know what is with me in the house, and he has put all that he has into my hand.

But he would not do it. He said to his boss’s wife, “See, with me near, my boss does not worry about anything in the house. He has put all he owns in my care.

9 N o one is greater in this house than I am, and he has not kept back anything from me but you, because you are his wife. How then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?”

There is no one more important in this house than I. And he has held nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. How then could I do this sinful thing, and sin against God?”

10 A s she spoke to Joseph day by day, he didn’t listen to her, to lie by her, or to be with her.

She spoke to Joseph day after day. But he did not listen to her. He would not lie with her or be with her.

11 A bout this time, he went into the house to do his work, and there were none of the men of the house inside.

Then one day Joseph went into the house to do his work. None of the men of the house were inside.

12 S he caught him by his garment, saying, “Lie with me!” He left his garment in her hand, and ran outside.

She caught him by his coat, saying, “Lie with me!” But he ran out of the house leaving the coat in her hand.

13 W hen she saw that he had left his garment in her hand, and had run outside,

When she saw that he had left his coat in her hand and had run out of the house,

14 s he called to the men of her house, and spoke to them, saying, “Behold, he has brought in a Hebrew to us to mock us. He came in to me to lie with me, and I cried with a loud voice.

she called the men of her house. And she said to them, “See, this Hebrew has been brought to us to make fun of us. He came in to lie with me, and I cried out with a loud voice.

15 W hen he heard that I lifted up my voice and cried, he left his garment by me, and ran outside.”

When he heard my loud cry, he left his coat with me and ran outside.”

16 S he laid up his garment by her, until his master came home.

She kept his coat with her until his boss came home.

17 S he spoke to him according to these words, saying, “The Hebrew servant, whom you have brought to us, came in to me to mock me,

Then she told him the same story, saying, “The Hebrew servant whom you brought to us came to me to lie with me.

18 a nd as I lifted up my voice and cried, he left his garment by me, and ran outside.”

But when I called out in a loud voice, he left his coat with me and ran outside.”

19 W hen his master heard the words of his wife, which she spoke to him, saying, “This is what your servant did to me,” his wrath was kindled.

When his boss heard his wife’s story and her words, “This is what your servant did to me,” he became very angry.

20 J oseph’s master took him, and put him into the prison, the place where the king’s prisoners were bound, and he was there in custody.

So Joseph’s boss took him and put him in prison, the place where the men who did wrong against the king were put in chains. So there he was in prison.

21 B ut Yahweh was with Joseph, and showed kindness to him, and gave him favor in the sight of the keeper of the prison.

But the Lord was with Joseph, and showed him kindness. He gave him favor in the eyes of the man who watched over the prison.

22 T he keeper of the prison committed to Joseph’s hand all the prisoners who were in the prison. Whatever they did there, he was responsible for it.

The head of the prison put all the men who were in prison into Joseph’s care. So whatever was done there was because of Joseph.

23 T he keeper of the prison didn’t look after anything that was under his hand, because Yahweh was with him; and that which he did, Yahweh made it prosper.

The head of the prison did not worry about anything under Joseph’s care, because the Lord was with him. The Lord made all go well with whatever Joseph did.
