1 I n those days, when there was a very great multitude, and they had nothing to eat, Jesus called his disciples to himself, and said to them,

In those days many people were gathered together. They had nothing to eat. Jesus called His followers to Him and said,

2 I have compassion on the multitude, because they have stayed with me now three days, and have nothing to eat.

“I pity these people because they have been with Me three days and have nothing to eat.

3 I f I send them away fasting to their home, they will faint on the way, for some of them have come a long way.”

If I send them home without food, they may be too weak as they go. Many of them have come a long way.”

4 H is disciples answered him, “From where could one satisfy these people with bread here in a deserted place?”

His followers said to Him, “Where can anyone get enough bread for them here in this desert?”

5 H e asked them, “How many loaves do you have?” They said, “Seven.”

He asked them, “How many loaves of bread do you have?” They said, “Seven.”

6 H e commanded the multitude to sit down on the ground, and he took the seven loaves. Having given thanks, he broke them, and gave them to his disciples to serve, and they served the multitude.

Then He told the people to sit down on the ground. Jesus took the seven loaves of bread and gave thanks to God. He broke the loaves and gave them to His followers to give to the people. The followers gave the bread to them.

7 T hey had a few small fish. Having blessed them, he said to serve these also.

They had a few small fish also. He gave thanks to God and told the followers to give the fish to them.

8 T hey ate, and were filled. They took up seven baskets of broken pieces that were left over.

They all ate and were filled. They picked up seven baskets full of pieces of bread and fish after the people were finished eating.

9 T hose who had eaten were about four thousand. Then he sent them away.

About four thousand ate. Then Jesus sent the people away. The Proud Religious Law-Keepers Ask for Something Special to See

10 I mmediately he entered into the boat with his disciples, and came into the region of Dalmanutha.

At once Jesus got in a boat with His followers and came to the country of Dalmanutha.

11 T he Pharisees came out and began to question him, seeking from him a sign from heaven, and testing him.

The proud religious law-keepers came and began to ask Him for something special to see from heaven. They wanted to trap Jesus.

12 H e sighed deeply in his spirit, and said, “Why does this generation seek a sign? Most certainly I tell you, no sign will be given to this generation.”

He breathed deep within and said, “Why do the people of this day look for something special to see? For sure, I tell you, the people of this day will have nothing special to see from heaven.”

13 H e left them, and again entering into the boat, departed to the other side.

Then He left them. He got in the boat and went to the other side of the sea. Jesus Shows That the Teaching of the Proud Religious Law-Keepers Is Wrong

14 T hey forgot to take bread; and they didn’t have more than one loaf in the boat with them.

The followers had forgotten to take bread, only one loaf was in the boat.

15 H e warned them, saying, “Take heed: beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and the yeast of Herod.”

He said to them, “Look out! Have nothing to do with the yeast of the proud religious law-keepers and of Herod.”

16 T hey reasoned with one another, saying, “It’s because we have no bread.”

They talked about it among themselves. They said, “He said this because we forgot to bring bread.”

17 J esus, perceiving it, said to them, “Why do you reason that it’s because you have no bread? Don’t you perceive yet, neither understand? Is your heart still hardened?

Jesus knew what they were thinking. He said to them, “Why are you talking among yourselves about forgetting to bring bread? Do you not understand? Is it not plain to you? Are your hearts still hard?

18 H aving eyes, don’t you see? Having ears, don’t you hear? Don’t you remember?

You have eyes, do you not see? You have ears, do you not hear? Do you not remember?

19 W hen I broke the five loaves among the five thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you take up?” They told him, “Twelve.”

When I divided the five loaves of bread among the five thousand, how many baskets full of pieces did you pick up?” They said, “Twelve.”

20 When the seven loaves fed the four thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you take up?” They told him, “Seven.”

“When I divided the seven loaves of bread among the four thousand, how many baskets full of pieces did you pick up?” They said, “Seven.”

21 H e asked them, “Don’t you understand, yet?”

Then He asked, “Why do you not understand yet?” Jesus Heals a Blind Man

22 H e came to Bethsaida. They brought a blind man to him, and begged him to touch him.

Then they came to the town of Bethsaida. Some people brought a blind man to Jesus. They asked if He would touch him.

23 H e took hold of the blind man by the hand, and brought him out of the village. When he had spit on his eyes, and laid his hands on him, he asked him if he saw anything.

He took the blind man by the hand out of town. Then He spit on the eyes of the blind man and put His hands on him. He asked, “Do you see anything?”

24 H e looked up, and said, “I see men; for I see them like trees walking.”

The blind man looked up and said, “I see some men. They look like trees, walking.”

25 T hen again he laid his hands on his eyes. He looked intently, and was restored, and saw everyone clearly.

Jesus put His hands on the man’s eyes again and told him to look up. Then he was healed and saw everything well.

26 H e sent him away to his house, saying, “Don’t enter into the village, nor tell anyone in the village.”

Jesus sent him to his home and said, “Do not go into the town, or tell it to anyone there.” Peter Says Jesus Is the Christ

27 J esus went out, with his disciples, into the villages of Caesarea Philippi. On the way he asked his disciples, “Who do men say that I am?”

Jesus and His followers went from there to the towns of Caesarea Philippi. As they went, He asked His followers, “Who do people say that I am?”

28 T hey told him, “John the Baptizer, and others say Elijah, but others: one of the prophets.”

They answered, “Some say John the Baptist and some say Elijah and others say one of the early preachers.”

29 H e said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter answered, “You are the Christ.”

He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter said, “You are the Christ.”

30 H e commanded them that they should tell no one about him.

He told them with strong words that they should tell no one about Him. Jesus Tells of His Death for the First Time

31 H e began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again.

He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things. He told them that the leaders and the religious leaders of the Jews and the teachers of the Law would have nothing to do with Him. He told them He would be killed and three days later He would be raised from the dead.

32 H e spoke to them openly. Peter took him, and began to rebuke him.

He had said this in plain words. Peter took Him away from the others and began to speak sharp words to Him.

33 B ut he, turning around, and seeing his disciples, rebuked Peter, and said, “Get behind me, Satan! For you have in mind not the things of God, but the things of men.”

Jesus turned around. He looked at His followers and spoke sharp words to Peter. He said, “Get behind Me, Satan! Your thoughts are not thoughts from God but from men.” Giving Up Self and One’s Own Desires

34 H e called the multitude to himself with his disciples, and said to them, “Whoever wants to come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.

Jesus called the people and His followers to Him. He said to them, “If anyone wants to be My follower, he must give up himself and his own desires. He must take up his cross and follow Me.

35 F or whoever wants to save his life will lose it; and whoever will lose his life for my sake and the sake of the Good News will save it.

If anyone wants to keep his own life safe, he will lose it. If anyone gives up his life because of Me and because of the Good News, he will save it.

36 F or what does it profit a man, to gain the whole world, and forfeit his life?

For what does a man have if he gets all the world and loses his own soul?

37 F or what will a man give in exchange for his life?

What can a man give to buy back his soul?

38 F or whoever will be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man also will be ashamed of him, when he comes in his Father’s glory, with the holy angels.”

Whoever is ashamed of Me and My Words among the sinful people of this day, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when He comes in the shining-greatness of His Father and His holy angels.”
