1 I n those days, when there was again a large crowd and they had nothing to eat, Jesus called His disciples and said to them,
In those days many people were gathered together. They had nothing to eat. Jesus called His followers to Him and said,
2 “ I feel compassion for the people because they have remained with Me now three days and have nothing to eat.
“I pity these people because they have been with Me three days and have nothing to eat.
3 I f I send them away hungry to their homes, they will faint on the way; and some of them have come from a great distance.”
If I send them home without food, they may be too weak as they go. Many of them have come a long way.”
4 A nd His disciples answered Him, “Where will anyone be able to find enough bread here in this desolate place to satisfy these people?”
His followers said to Him, “Where can anyone get enough bread for them here in this desert?”
5 A nd He was asking them, “How many loaves do you have?” And they said, “Seven.”
He asked them, “How many loaves of bread do you have?” They said, “Seven.”
6 A nd He directed the people to sit down on the ground; and taking the seven loaves, He gave thanks and broke them, and started giving them to His disciples to serve to them, and they served them to the people.
Then He told the people to sit down on the ground. Jesus took the seven loaves of bread and gave thanks to God. He broke the loaves and gave them to His followers to give to the people. The followers gave the bread to them.
7 T hey also had a few small fish; and after He had blessed them, He ordered these to be served as well.
They had a few small fish also. He gave thanks to God and told the followers to give the fish to them.
8 A nd they ate and were satisfied; and they picked up seven large baskets full of what was left over of the broken pieces.
They all ate and were filled. They picked up seven baskets full of pieces of bread and fish after the people were finished eating.
9 A bout four thousand were there; and He sent them away.
About four thousand ate. Then Jesus sent the people away. The Proud Religious Law-Keepers Ask for Something Special to See
10 A nd immediately He entered the boat with His disciples and came to the district of Dalmanutha.
At once Jesus got in a boat with His followers and came to the country of Dalmanutha.
11 T he Pharisees came out and began to argue with Him, seeking from Him a sign from heaven, to test Him.
The proud religious law-keepers came and began to ask Him for something special to see from heaven. They wanted to trap Jesus.
12 S ighing deeply in His spirit, He said, “Why does this generation seek for a sign? Truly I say to you, no sign will be given to this generation.”
He breathed deep within and said, “Why do the people of this day look for something special to see? For sure, I tell you, the people of this day will have nothing special to see from heaven.”
13 L eaving them, He again embarked and went away to the other side.
Then He left them. He got in the boat and went to the other side of the sea. Jesus Shows That the Teaching of the Proud Religious Law-Keepers Is Wrong
14 A nd they had forgotten to take bread, and did not have more than one loaf in the boat with them.
The followers had forgotten to take bread, only one loaf was in the boat.
15 A nd He was giving orders to them, saying, “ Watch out! Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod.”
He said to them, “Look out! Have nothing to do with the yeast of the proud religious law-keepers and of Herod.”
16 T hey began to discuss with one another the fact that they had no bread.
They talked about it among themselves. They said, “He said this because we forgot to bring bread.”
17 A nd Jesus, aware of this, said to them, “Why do you discuss the fact that you have no bread? Do you not yet see or understand? Do you have a hardened heart?
Jesus knew what they were thinking. He said to them, “Why are you talking among yourselves about forgetting to bring bread? Do you not understand? Is it not plain to you? Are your hearts still hard?
18 H aving eyes, do you not see ? And having ears, do you not hear ? And do you not remember,
You have eyes, do you not see? You have ears, do you not hear? Do you not remember?
19 w hen I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces you picked up?” They said to Him, “Twelve.”
When I divided the five loaves of bread among the five thousand, how many baskets full of pieces did you pick up?” They said, “Twelve.”
20 “ When I broke the seven for the four thousand, how many large baskets full of broken pieces did you pick up?” And they said to Him, “Seven.”
“When I divided the seven loaves of bread among the four thousand, how many baskets full of pieces did you pick up?” They said, “Seven.”
21 A nd He was saying to them, “ Do you not yet understand?”
Then He asked, “Why do you not understand yet?” Jesus Heals a Blind Man
22 A nd they came to Bethsaida. And they brought a blind man to Jesus and implored Him to touch him.
Then they came to the town of Bethsaida. Some people brought a blind man to Jesus. They asked if He would touch him.
23 T aking the blind man by the hand, He brought him out of the village; and after spitting on his eyes and laying His hands on him, He asked him, “Do you see anything?”
He took the blind man by the hand out of town. Then He spit on the eyes of the blind man and put His hands on him. He asked, “Do you see anything?”
24 A nd he looked up and said, “I see men, for I see them like trees, walking around.”
The blind man looked up and said, “I see some men. They look like trees, walking.”
25 T hen again He laid His hands on his eyes; and he looked intently and was restored, and began to see everything clearly.
Jesus put His hands on the man’s eyes again and told him to look up. Then he was healed and saw everything well.
26 A nd He sent him to his home, saying, “Do not even enter the village.” Peter’s Confession of Christ
Jesus sent him to his home and said, “Do not go into the town, or tell it to anyone there.” Peter Says Jesus Is the Christ
27 J esus went out, along with His disciples, to the villages of Caesarea Philippi; and on the way He questioned His disciples, saying to them, “Who do people say that I am?”
Jesus and His followers went from there to the towns of Caesarea Philippi. As they went, He asked His followers, “Who do people say that I am?”
28 T hey told Him, saying, “John the Baptist; and others say Elijah; but others, one of the prophets.”
They answered, “Some say John the Baptist and some say Elijah and others say one of the early preachers.”
29 A nd He continued by questioning them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter answered and said to Him, “You are the Christ.”
He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter said, “You are the Christ.”
30 A nd He warned them to tell no one about Him.
He told them with strong words that they should tell no one about Him. Jesus Tells of His Death for the First Time
31 A nd He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again.
He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things. He told them that the leaders and the religious leaders of the Jews and the teachers of the Law would have nothing to do with Him. He told them He would be killed and three days later He would be raised from the dead.
32 A nd He was stating the matter plainly. And Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him.
He had said this in plain words. Peter took Him away from the others and began to speak sharp words to Him.
33 B ut turning around and seeing His disciples, He rebuked Peter and said, “Get behind Me, Satan; for you are not setting your mind on God’s interests, but man’s.”
Jesus turned around. He looked at His followers and spoke sharp words to Peter. He said, “Get behind Me, Satan! Your thoughts are not thoughts from God but from men.” Giving Up Self and One’s Own Desires
34 A nd He summoned the crowd with His disciples, and said to them, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me.
Jesus called the people and His followers to Him. He said to them, “If anyone wants to be My follower, he must give up himself and his own desires. He must take up his cross and follow Me.
35 F or whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake and the gospel’s will save it.
If anyone wants to keep his own life safe, he will lose it. If anyone gives up his life because of Me and because of the Good News, he will save it.
36 F or what does it profit a man to gain the whole world, and forfeit his soul?
For what does a man have if he gets all the world and loses his own soul?
37 F or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?
What can a man give to buy back his soul?
38 F or whoever is ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will also be ashamed of him when He comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels.”
Whoever is ashamed of Me and My Words among the sinful people of this day, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when He comes in the shining-greatness of His Father and His holy angels.”
