1 N ow it came about, when men began to multiply on the face of the land, and daughters were born to them,

When men became many in number on the earth, and daughters were born to them,

2 t hat the sons of God saw that the daughters of men were beautiful; and they took wives for themselves, whomever they chose.

the sons of God saw that the daughters of men were beautiful. And they took wives for themselves, whomever they chose.

3 T hen the Lord said, “ My Spirit shall not strive with man forever, because he also is flesh; nevertheless his days shall be one hundred and twenty years.”

Then the Lord said, “My Spirit will not stay in man forever, for he is flesh. But yet he will live for 120 years.”

4 T he Nephilim were on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of men, and they bore children to them. Those were the mighty men who were of old, men of renown.

Very large men were on the earth in those days, and later also, when the sons of God lived with the daughters of men, who gave birth to their children. These were the powerful men of long ago, men of much strength.

5 T hen the Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great on the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.

Then the Lord saw that man was very sinful on the earth. Every plan and thought of the heart of man was sinful always.

6 T he Lord was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart.

The Lord was sorry that He had made man on the earth. He had sorrow in His heart.

7 T he Lord said, “ I will blot out man whom I have created from the face of the land, from man to animals to creeping things and to birds of the sky; for I am sorry that I have made them.”

So the Lord said, “I will destroy man whom I have made from the land, man and animals, things that move upon the earth and birds of the sky. For I am sorry that I have made them.”

8 B ut Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord.

But Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord.

9 T hese are the records of the generations of Noah. Noah was a righteous man, blameless in his time; Noah walked with God.

This is the story of Noah and his family. Noah was right with God. He was without blame in his time. Noah walked with God.

10 N oah became the father of three sons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

And Noah became the father of three sons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

11 N ow the earth was corrupt in the sight of God, and the earth was filled with violence.

Now the earth was sinful in the eyes of God. The earth was filled with people hurting each other.

12 G od looked on the earth, and behold, it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted their way upon the earth.

God looked at the earth and saw how sinful it was. For all who lived on the earth had become sinful in their ways.

13 T hen God said to Noah, “ The end of all flesh has come before Me; for the earth is filled with violence because of them; and behold, I am about to destroy them with the earth.

Then God said to Noah, “I have decided to make an end to all the people on the earth. They are the cause of very much trouble. See, I will destroy them as I destroy the earth.

14 M ake for yourself an ark of gopher wood; you shall make the ark with rooms, and shall cover it inside and out with pitch.

Make a large boat of gopher wood for yourself. Build rooms in the boat. And cover it inside and out with tar.

15 T his is how you shall make it: the length of the ark three hundred cubits, its breadth fifty cubits, and its height thirty cubits.

This is how you are to make it: The boat is to be as long as 150 long steps, as wide as twenty-five long steps, and eight times taller than a man.

16 Y ou shall make a window for the ark, and finish it to a cubit from the top; and set the door of the ark in the side of it; you shall make it with lower, second, and third decks.

Make a window for the boat, that goes down a cubit from the roof. Put a door in the side of the boat. And make it with first, second, and third floors.

17 B ehold, I, even I am bringing the flood of water upon the earth, to destroy all flesh in which is the breath of life, from under heaven; everything that is on the earth shall perish.

See, I will bring a flood of water upon the earth, to destroy all flesh under heaven that has the breath of life. Everything on earth will be destroyed.

18 B ut I will establish My covenant with you; and you shall enter the ark—you and your sons and your wife, and your sons’ wives with you.

But I will make My agreement with you. You will go into the large boat, you and your sons and your wife, and your sons’ wives with you.

19 A nd of every living thing of all flesh, you shall bring two of every kind into the ark, to keep them alive with you; they shall be male and female.

You are to bring into the large boat two of every kind of living thing of all flesh, to keep them alive with you. They will be male and female.

20 O f the birds after their kind, and of the animals after their kind, of every creeping thing of the ground after its kind, two of every kind will come to you to keep them alive.

Two of all the kinds of birds, and animals, and every thing that moves on the ground are to be with you to keep them alive.

21 A s for you, take for yourself some of all food which is edible, and gather it to yourself; and it shall be for food for you and for them.”

And take with you every kind of food that is eaten, and store it. It will be food for you and for them.”

22 T hus Noah did; according to all that God had commanded him, so he did.

Noah did just what God told him to do.
