1 O Lord, rebuke me not in Your wrath, And chasten me not in Your burning anger.

O Lord, do not speak sharp words to me when You are angry. Do not punish me in Your burning anger.

2 F or Your arrows have sunk deep into me, And Your hand has pressed down on me.

For Your arrows have cut deep into me. And Your hand has come down upon me.

3 T here is no soundness in my flesh because of Your indignation; There is no health in my bones because of my sin.

My body is in pain because of Your anger. There is no strength in my bones because of my sin.

4 F or my iniquities are gone over my head; As a heavy burden they weigh too much for me.

For my sins are gone over my head. Like a heavy load, they weigh too much for me.

5 M y wounds grow foul and fester Because of my folly.

My sores smell and grow bigger because I do foolish things.

6 I am bent over and greatly bowed down; I go mourning all day long.

I cannot stand straight but keep my head down. I have sorrow all day long

7 F or my loins are filled with burning, And there is no soundness in my flesh.

for my body is filled with burning pain. There is no strength in my body.

8 I am benumbed and badly crushed; I groan because of the agitation of my heart.

I am weak and broken. I cry because of the pain in my heart.

9 L ord, all my desire is before You; And my sighing is not hidden from You.

Lord, all my desire is before You. And my breathing deep within is not hidden from You.

10 M y heart throbs, my strength fails me; And the light of my eyes, even that has gone from me.

My heart beats fast. My strength leaves me. Even the light of my eyes has gone from me.

11 M y loved ones and my friends stand aloof from my plague; And my kinsmen stand afar off.

My loved ones and my friends stay away from me because of my sickness. My family stands far away.

12 T hose who seek my life lay snares for me; And those who seek to injure me have threatened destruction, And they devise treachery all day long.

Those who want to take my life set their traps. And those who want to destroy me talk about ways to do it. They make their sinful plans all day long.

13 B ut I, like a deaf man, do not hear; And I am like a mute man who does not open his mouth.

But like a deaf man, I do not hear. I am like one who cannot speak and does not open his mouth.

14 Y es, I am like a man who does not hear, And in whose mouth are no arguments.

Yes, I am like a man who does not hear, and whose mouth does not argue.

15 F or I hope in You, O Lord; You will answer, O Lord my God.

For I hope in You, O Lord. You will answer, O Lord my God.

16 F or I said, “May they not rejoice over me, Who, when my foot slips, would magnify themselves against me.”

For I said, “Do not let them be happy and raise themselves up against me when my foot trips.”

17 F or I am ready to fall, And my sorrow is continually before me.

For I am ready to fall. And my sorrow is always with me.

18 F or I confess my iniquity; I am full of anxiety because of my sin.

For I tell my wrong-doings. I am full of sorrow because of my sin.

19 B ut my enemies are vigorous and strong, And many are those who hate me wrongfully.

But those who fight against me are full of action and strength. There are many who hate me without reason.

20 A nd those who repay evil for good, They oppose me, because I follow what is good.

They pay what is bad for what is good. They are against me because I follow what is good.

21 D o not forsake me, O Lord; O my God, do not be far from me!

Do not leave me alone, O Lord! O my God, do not be far from me!

22 M ake haste to help me, O Lord, my salvation!

Hurry to help me, O Lord, Who saves me!
