1 B ut on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they came to the tomb bringing the spices which they had prepared.

Early in the morning on the first day of the week, the women went to the grave taking the spices they had made ready.

2 A nd they found the stone rolled away from the tomb,

They found the stone had been pushed away from the grave.

3 b ut when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.

They went in but they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.

4 W hile they were perplexed about this, behold, two men suddenly stood near them in dazzling clothing;

While they wondered about what had happened, they saw two men standing by them in shining clothes.

5 a nd as the women were terrified and bowed their faces to the ground, the men said to them, “Why do you seek the living One among the dead?

They were very much afraid and got down with their faces to the ground. The men said to them, “Why do you look for the living One among those who are dead?

6 H e is not here, but He has risen. Remember how He spoke to you while He was still in Galilee,

He is not here. He is risen. Do you not remember what He said to you when He was yet in Galilee?

7 s aying that the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.”

He said, ‘The Son of Man must be given over into the hands of sinful men. He must be nailed to a cross. He will rise again three days later.’”

8 A nd they remembered His words,

They remembered what He had said.

9 a nd returned from the tomb and reported all these things to the eleven and to all the rest.

When they came back from the grave, they told all these things to the eleven followers and to all the others.

10 N ow they were Mary Magdalene and Joanna and Mary the mother of James; also the other women with them were telling these things to the apostles.

They were Mary Magdalene and Joanna and Mary the mother of James. Other women who were with them told these things to the followers also.

11 B ut these words appeared to them as nonsense, and they would not believe them.

Their words sounded like foolish talk. The followers did not believe them.

12 B ut Peter got up and ran to the tomb; stooping and looking in, he saw the linen wrappings only; and he went away to his home, marveling at what had happened. The Road to Emmaus

But Peter got up and ran to the grave. He got down to look in and saw only the linen clothes. Then he went away, surprised about what had happened. The Followers of Jesus Do Not Believe He Is Risen

13 A nd behold, two of them were going that very day to a village named Emmaus, which was about seven miles from Jerusalem.

That same day two of His followers were going to the town of Emmaus. It was about a two-hour walk from Jerusalem.

14 A nd they were talking with each other about all these things which had taken place.

They talked of all these things that had happened.

15 W hile they were talking and discussing, Jesus Himself approached and began traveling with them.

While they were talking together, Jesus Himself came and walked along with them.

16 B ut their eyes were prevented from recognizing Him.

Something kept their eyes from seeing Who He was.

17 A nd He said to them, “What are these words that you are exchanging with one another as you are walking?” And they stood still, looking sad.

He said to them, “What are you talking about as you walk?” They stood still and looked sad.

18 O ne of them, named Cleopas, answered and said to Him, “Are You the only one visiting Jerusalem and unaware of the things which have happened here in these days?”

One of them, whose name was Cleopas, said to Him, “Are you the only one visiting Jerusalem who has not heard of the things that have happened here these days?”

19 A nd He said to them, “What things?” And they said to Him, “The things about Jesus the Nazarene, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word in the sight of God and all the people,

Jesus said to them, “What things?” They answered, “The things about Jesus of Nazareth. He was the great One Who spoke for God. He did powerful works and spoke powerful words in the sight of God and the people.

20 a nd how the chief priests and our rulers delivered Him to the sentence of death, and crucified Him.

And the religious leaders and the leaders of the people gave Him over to be killed and nailed Him to a cross.

21 B ut we were hoping that it was He who was going to redeem Israel. Indeed, besides all this, it is the third day since these things happened.

We were hoping He was the One Who was going to make the Jewish people free. But it was three days ago when these things happened.

22 B ut also some women among us amazed us. When they were at the tomb early in the morning,

“Some of the women of our group have surprised us and made us wonder. They went to the grave early this morning.

23 a nd did not find His body, they came, saying that they had also seen a vision of angels who said that He was alive.

They did not find His body. They came back saying they had seen angels in a special dream who said that He was alive.

24 S ome of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just exactly as the women also had said; but Him they did not see.”

Some of those who were with us went to the grave and found it as the women had said. But they did not see Him.”

25 A nd He said to them, “O foolish men and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken!

Then Jesus said to them, “You foolish men. How slow you are to believe what the early preachers have said.

26 W as it not necessary for the Christ to suffer these things and to enter into His glory?”

Did not Christ have to go through these hard things to come into His shining-greatness?”

27 T hen beginning with Moses and with all the prophets, He explained to them the things concerning Himself in all the Scriptures.

Jesus kept on telling them what Moses and all the early preachers had said about Him in the Holy Writings.

28 A nd they approached the village where they were going, and He acted as though He were going farther.

When they came to the town where they were going, Jesus acted as if He were going farther.

29 B ut they urged Him, saying, “Stay with us, for it is getting toward evening, and the day is now nearly over.” So He went in to stay with them.

But they said to Him, “Stay with us. It will soon be evening. The day is about over.” He went in to stay with them.

30 W hen He had reclined at the table with them, He took the bread and blessed it, and breaking it, He began giving it to them.

As He sat at the table with them, He took the bread and gave thanks and broke it. Then He gave it to them.

31 T hen their eyes were opened and they recognized Him; and He vanished from their sight.

And their eyes were opened and they knew Him. Then He left them and could not be seen.

32 T hey said to one another, “ Were not our hearts burning within us while He was speaking to us on the road, while He was explaining the Scriptures to us?”

They said to each other, “Were not our hearts filled with joy when He talked to us on the road about what the Holy Writings said?”

33 A nd they got up that very hour and returned to Jerusalem, and found gathered together the eleven and those who were with them,

Then they got up at once and went back to Jerusalem. They found the eleven followers together and others with them.

34 s aying, “ The Lord has really risen and has appeared to Simon.”

They said, “For sure the Lord is risen and was seen by Simon.”

35 T hey began to relate their experiences on the road and how He was recognized by them in the breaking of the bread. Other Appearances

Then they told what had happened on the road and how they came to know Him when He broke the bread. Jesus Is Seen by the Other Ten Followers

36 W hile they were telling these things, He Himself stood in their midst and said to them, “Peace be to you.”

As they talked, Jesus Himself stood among them. He said, “May you have peace.”

37 B ut they were startled and frightened and thought that they were seeing a spirit.

But they were afraid and full of fear. They thought they saw a spirit.

38 A nd He said to them, “Why are you troubled, and why do doubts arise in your hearts?

Jesus said to them, “Why are you afraid? Why do you have doubts in your hearts?

39 S ee My hands and My feet, that it is I Myself; touch Me and see, for a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have.”

Look at My hands and My feet. See! It is I, Myself! Touch Me and see for yourself. A spirit does not have flesh and bones as I have.”

40 A nd when He had said this, He showed them His hands and His feet.

When Jesus had said this, He showed them His hands and feet.

41 W hile they still could not believe it because of their joy and amazement, He said to them, “ Have you anything here to eat?”

They still wondered. It was hard for them to believe it and yet it made them happy. Then He said to them, “Do you have anything here to eat?”

42 T hey gave Him a piece of a broiled fish;

They gave Jesus a piece of fish that had been cooked and some honey.

43 a nd He took it and ate it before them.

He took it and ate it in front of them. Jesus Sends His Followers to Teach

44 N ow He said to them, “ These are My words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things which are written about Me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled.”

Jesus said to them, “These are the things I told you while I was yet with you. All things written about Me in the Law of Moses and in the Books of the early preachers and in the Psalms must happen as they said they would happen.”

45 T hen He opened their minds to understand the Scriptures,

Then He opened their minds to understand the Holy Writings.

46 a nd He said to them, “ Thus it is written, that the Christ would suffer and rise again from the dead the third day,

He said to them, “It is written that Christ should suffer and be raised from the dead after three days.

47 a nd that repentance for forgiveness of sins would be proclaimed in His name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem.

It must be preached that men must be sorry for their sins and turn from them. Then they will be forgiven. This must be preached in His name to all nations beginning in Jerusalem.

48 Y ou are witnesses of these things.

You are to tell what you have seen.

49 A nd behold, I am sending forth the promise of My Father upon you; but you are to stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.” The Ascension

See! I will send you what My Father promised. But you are to stay in Jerusalem until you have received power from above.” Jesus Goes to Be Beside His Father

50 A nd He led them out as far as Bethany, and He lifted up His hands and blessed them.

Jesus led them out as far as Bethany. Then He lifted up His hands and prayed that good would come to them.

51 W hile He was blessing them, He parted from them and was carried up into heaven.

And while He was praying that good would come to them, He went from them (and was taken up to heaven and

52 A nd they, after worshiping Him, returned to Jerusalem with great joy,

they worshiped Him). Then they went back to Jerusalem with great joy.

53 a nd were continually in the temple praising God.

They spent all their time in the house of God honoring and giving thanks to God.
