1 O Lord, do not rebuke me in Your wrath, Nor chasten me in Your hot displeasure!

O Lord, do not speak sharp words to me when You are angry. Do not punish me in Your burning anger.

2 F or Your arrows pierce me deeply, And Your hand presses me down.

For Your arrows have cut deep into me. And Your hand has come down upon me.

3 T here is no soundness in my flesh Because of Your anger, Nor any health in my bones Because of my sin.

My body is in pain because of Your anger. There is no strength in my bones because of my sin.

4 F or my iniquities have gone over my head; Like a heavy burden they are too heavy for me.

For my sins are gone over my head. Like a heavy load, they weigh too much for me.

5 M y wounds are foul and festering Because of my foolishness.

My sores smell and grow bigger because I do foolish things.

6 I am troubled, I am bowed down greatly; I go mourning all the day long.

I cannot stand straight but keep my head down. I have sorrow all day long

7 F or my loins are full of inflammation, And there is no soundness in my flesh.

for my body is filled with burning pain. There is no strength in my body.

8 I am feeble and severely broken; I groan because of the turmoil of my heart.

I am weak and broken. I cry because of the pain in my heart.

9 L ord, all my desire is before You; And my sighing is not hidden from You.

Lord, all my desire is before You. And my breathing deep within is not hidden from You.

10 M y heart pants, my strength fails me; As for the light of my eyes, it also has gone from me.

My heart beats fast. My strength leaves me. Even the light of my eyes has gone from me.

11 M y loved ones and my friends stand aloof from my plague, And my relatives stand afar off.

My loved ones and my friends stay away from me because of my sickness. My family stands far away.

12 T hose also who seek my life lay snares for me; Those who seek my hurt speak of destruction, And plan deception all the day long.

Those who want to take my life set their traps. And those who want to destroy me talk about ways to do it. They make their sinful plans all day long.

13 B ut I, like a deaf man, do not hear; And I am like a mute who does not open his mouth.

But like a deaf man, I do not hear. I am like one who cannot speak and does not open his mouth.

14 T hus I am like a man who does not hear, And in whose mouth is no response.

Yes, I am like a man who does not hear, and whose mouth does not argue.

15 F or in You, O Lord, I hope; You will hear, O Lord my God.

For I hope in You, O Lord. You will answer, O Lord my God.

16 F or I said, “Hear me, lest they rejoice over me, Lest, when my foot slips, they exalt themselves against me.”

For I said, “Do not let them be happy and raise themselves up against me when my foot trips.”

17 F or I am ready to fall, And my sorrow is continually before me.

For I am ready to fall. And my sorrow is always with me.

18 F or I will declare my iniquity; I will be in anguish over my sin.

For I tell my wrong-doings. I am full of sorrow because of my sin.

19 B ut my enemies are vigorous, and they are strong; And those who hate me wrongfully have multiplied.

But those who fight against me are full of action and strength. There are many who hate me without reason.

20 T hose also who render evil for good, They are my adversaries, because I follow what is good.

They pay what is bad for what is good. They are against me because I follow what is good.

21 D o not forsake me, O Lord; O my God, be not far from me!

Do not leave me alone, O Lord! O my God, do not be far from me!

22 M ake haste to help me, O Lord, my salvation!

Hurry to help me, O Lord, Who saves me!
