1 N ow Adam knew Eve his wife, and she conceived and bore Cain, and said, “I have acquired a man from the Lord.”

The man lay with his wife Eve and she was going to have a child and she gave birth to Cain. She said, “I have given birth to a man with the help of the Lord.”

2 T hen she bore again, this time his brother Abel. Now Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.

Next she gave birth to his brother Abel. Now Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was one who worked the ground.

3 A nd in the process of time it came to pass that Cain brought an offering of the fruit of the ground to the Lord.

The day came when Cain brought a gift of the fruit of the ground to the Lord.

4 A bel also brought of the firstborn of his flock and of their fat. And the Lord respected Abel and his offering,

But Abel brought a gift of the first-born of his flocks and of the fat parts. The Lord showed favor to Abel and his gift.

5 b ut He did not respect Cain and his offering. And Cain was very angry, and his countenance fell.

But He had no respect for Cain and his gift. So Cain became very angry and his face became sad.

6 S o the Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry? And why has your countenance fallen?

Then the Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry? And why are you looking down?

7 I f you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin lies at the door. And its desire is for you, but you should rule over it.”

Will not your face be happy if you do well? If you do not do well, sin is waiting to destroy you. Its desire is to rule over you, but you must rule over it.”

8 N ow Cain talked with Abel his brother; and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother and killed him.

Cain told this to his brother Abel. And when they were in the field, Cain stood up against his brother Abel and killed him.

9 T hen the Lord said to Cain, “Where is Abel your brother?” He said, “I do not know. Am I my brother’s keeper?”

Then the Lord said to Cain, “Where is Abel your brother?” And he said, “I do not know. Am I my brother’s keeper?”

10 A nd He said, “What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood cries out to Me from the ground.

The Lord said, “What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood is crying to Me from the ground.

11 S o now you are cursed from the earth, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand.

Now you are cursed because of the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand.

12 W hen you till the ground, it shall no longer yield its strength to you. A fugitive and a vagabond you shall be on the earth.”

When you work the ground, it will no longer give its strength to you. You will always travel from place to place on the earth.”

13 A nd Cain said to the Lord, “My punishment is greater than I can bear!

Then Cain said to the Lord, “I am being punished more than I can take!

14 S urely You have driven me out this day from the face of the ground; I shall be hidden from Your face; I shall be a fugitive and a vagabond on the earth, and it will happen that anyone who finds me will kill me.”

See, this day You have made me go away from the land. And I will be hidden from Your face. I will run away and move from place to place. And whoever finds me will kill me.”

15 A nd the Lord said to him, “Therefore, whoever kills Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold.” And the Lord set a mark on Cain, lest anyone finding him should kill him. The Family of Cain

So the Lord said to him, “Whoever kills Cain will be punished by Me seven times worse.” And the Lord put a mark on Cain so that any one who found him would not kill him.

16 T hen Cain went out from the presence of the Lord and dwelt in the land of Nod on the east of Eden.

Then Cain went away from the face of the Lord, and stayed in the land of Nod, east of Eden.

17 A nd Cain knew his wife, and she conceived and bore Enoch. And he built a city, and called the name of the city after the name of his son—Enoch.

Cain lay with his wife and she was going to have a child and she gave birth to Enoch. Cain built a city and gave it the name of Enoch, the name of his son.

18 T o Enoch was born Irad; and Irad begot Mehujael, and Mehujael begot Methushael, and Methushael begot Lamech.

Now Irad was born to Enoch. And Irad became the father of Mehujael. Mehujael became the father of Methushael. And Methushael became the father of Lamech.

19 T hen Lamech took for himself two wives: the name of one was Adah, and the name of the second was Zillah.

Lamech took two wives for himself. The name of one was Adah. And the name of the other was Zillah.

20 A nd Adah bore Jabal. He was the father of those who dwell in tents and have livestock.

Adah gave birth to Jabal. He was the father of those who live in tents and have cattle.

21 H is brother’s name was Jubal. He was the father of all those who play the harp and flute.

His brother’s name was Jubal. He was the father of all those who play the harp and the horn.

22 A nd as for Zillah, she also bore Tubal-Cain, an instructor of every craftsman in bronze and iron. And the sister of Tubal-Cain was Naamah.

Zillah gave birth to Tubal-cain who made things from brass and iron. The sister of Tubal-cain was Naamah.

23 T hen Lamech said to his wives: “Adah and Zillah, hear my voice; Wives of Lamech, listen to my speech! For I have killed a man for wounding me, Even a young man for hurting me.

And Lamech said to his wives, “Adah and Zillah, listen to my voice. Hear what I say, you wives of Lamech. For I have killed a man for hurting me, and a boy for hitting me.

24 I f Cain shall be avenged sevenfold, Then Lamech seventy-sevenfold.” A New Son

If those who hurt Cain are punished seven times worse, then those who hurt Lamech will be punished seventy-seven times worse.”

25 A nd Adam knew his wife again, and she bore a son and named him Seth, “For God has appointed another seed for me instead of Abel, whom Cain killed.”

And Adam lay with his wife again, and she gave birth to a son and gave him the name Seth. For she said, “God has let me have another son in the place of Abel, for Cain killed him.”

26 A nd as for Seth, to him also a son was born; and he named him Enosh. Then men began to call on the name of the Lord.

A son was born to Seth also, and he gave him the name Enosh. Then men began to call upon the name of the Lord.
