1 U nd Adam erkannte sein Weib Eva, und sie ward schwanger und gebar den Kain und sprach: Ich habe einen Mann gewonnen mit dem HERRN.

The man lay with his wife Eve and she was going to have a child and she gave birth to Cain. She said, “I have given birth to a man with the help of the Lord.”

2 U nd sie fuhr fort und gebar Abel, seinen Bruder. Und Abel ward ein Schäfer; Kain aber ward ein Ackermann.

Next she gave birth to his brother Abel. Now Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was one who worked the ground.

3 E s begab sich nach etlicher Zeit, daß Kain dem HERRN Opfer brachte von den Früchten des Feldes;

The day came when Cain brought a gift of the fruit of the ground to the Lord.

4 u nd Abel brachte auch von den Erstlingen seiner Herde und von ihrem Fett. Und der HERR sah gnädig an Abel und sein Opfer;

But Abel brought a gift of the first-born of his flocks and of the fat parts. The Lord showed favor to Abel and his gift.

5 a ber Kain und sein Opfer sah er nicht gnädig an. Da ergrimmte Kain sehr, und seine Gebärde verstellte sich.

But He had no respect for Cain and his gift. So Cain became very angry and his face became sad.

6 D a sprach der HERR zu Kain: Warum ergrimmst du? und warum verstellt sich deine Gebärde?

Then the Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry? And why are you looking down?

7 I st's nicht also? Wenn du fromm bist, so bist du angenehm; bist du aber nicht fromm, so ruht die Sünde vor der Tür, und nach dir hat sie Verlangen; du aber herrsche über sie.

Will not your face be happy if you do well? If you do not do well, sin is waiting to destroy you. Its desire is to rule over you, but you must rule over it.”

8 D a redete Kain mit seinem Bruder Abel. Und es begab sich, da sie auf dem Felde waren, erhob sich Kain wider seinen Bruder Abel und schlug ihn tot.

Cain told this to his brother Abel. And when they were in the field, Cain stood up against his brother Abel and killed him.

9 D a sprach der HERR zu Kain: Wo ist dein Bruder Abel? Er sprach: Ich weiß nicht; soll ich meines Bruders Hüter sein?

Then the Lord said to Cain, “Where is Abel your brother?” And he said, “I do not know. Am I my brother’s keeper?”

10 E r aber sprach: Was hast du getan? Die Stimme des Bluts deines Bruders schreit zu mir von der Erde.

The Lord said, “What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood is crying to Me from the ground.

11 U nd nun verflucht seist du auf der Erde, die ihr Maul hat aufgetan und deines Bruders Blut von deinen Händen empfangen.

Now you are cursed because of the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand.

12 W enn du den Acker bauen wirst, soll er dir hinfort sein Vermögen nicht geben. Unstet und flüchtig sollst du sein auf Erden.

When you work the ground, it will no longer give its strength to you. You will always travel from place to place on the earth.”

13 K ain aber sprach zu dem HERRN: Meine Sünde ist größer, denn daß sie mir vergeben werden möge.

Then Cain said to the Lord, “I am being punished more than I can take!

14 S iehe, du treibst mich heute aus dem Lande, und ich muß mich vor deinem Angesicht verbergen und muß unstet und flüchtig sein auf Erden. So wird mir's gehen, daß mich totschlage, wer mich findet.

See, this day You have made me go away from the land. And I will be hidden from Your face. I will run away and move from place to place. And whoever finds me will kill me.”

15 A ber der HERR sprach zu ihm: Nein; sondern wer Kain totschlägt, das soll siebenfältig gerächt werden. Und der HERR machte ein Zeichen an Kain, daß ihn niemand erschlüge, wer ihn fände.

So the Lord said to him, “Whoever kills Cain will be punished by Me seven times worse.” And the Lord put a mark on Cain so that any one who found him would not kill him.

16 A lso ging Kain von dem Angesicht des HERRN und wohnte im Lande Nod, jenseit Eden, gegen Morgen.

Then Cain went away from the face of the Lord, and stayed in the land of Nod, east of Eden.

17 U nd Kain erkannte sein Weib, die ward schwanger und gebar den Henoch. Und er baute eine Stadt, die nannte er nach seines Sohnes Namen Henoch.

Cain lay with his wife and she was going to have a child and she gave birth to Enoch. Cain built a city and gave it the name of Enoch, the name of his son.

18 H enoch aber zeugte Irad, Irad zeugte Mahujael, Mahujael zeugte Methusael, Methusael zeugte Lamech.

Now Irad was born to Enoch. And Irad became the father of Mehujael. Mehujael became the father of Methushael. And Methushael became the father of Lamech.

19 L amech aber nahm zwei Weiber; eine hieß Ada, die andere Zilla.

Lamech took two wives for himself. The name of one was Adah. And the name of the other was Zillah.

20 U nd Ada gebar Jabal; von dem sind hergekommen, die in Hütten wohnten und Vieh zogen.

Adah gave birth to Jabal. He was the father of those who live in tents and have cattle.

21 U nd sein Bruder hieß Jubal; von dem sind hergekommen die Geiger und Pfeifer.

His brother’s name was Jubal. He was the father of all those who play the harp and the horn.

22 D ie Zilla aber gebar auch, nämlich den Thubalkain, den Meister in allerlei Erz-und Eisenwerk. Und die Schwester des Thubalkain war Naema.

Zillah gave birth to Tubal-cain who made things from brass and iron. The sister of Tubal-cain was Naamah.

23 U nd Lamech sprach zu seinen Weibern Ada und Zilla: Ihr Weiber Lamechs, hört meine Rede und merkt, was ich sage: Ich habe einen Mann erschlagen für meine Wunde und einen Jüngling für meine Beule;

And Lamech said to his wives, “Adah and Zillah, listen to my voice. Hear what I say, you wives of Lamech. For I have killed a man for hurting me, and a boy for hitting me.

24 K ain soll siebenmal gerächt werden, aber Lamech siebenundsiebzigmal.

If those who hurt Cain are punished seven times worse, then those who hurt Lamech will be punished seventy-seven times worse.”

25 A dam erkannte abermals sein Weib, und sie gebar einen Sohn, den hieß sie Seth; denn Gott hat mir, sprach sie, einen andern Samen gesetzt für Abel, den Kain erwürgt hat.

And Adam lay with his wife again, and she gave birth to a son and gave him the name Seth. For she said, “God has let me have another son in the place of Abel, for Cain killed him.”

26 U nd Seth zeugte auch einen Sohn und hieß ihn Enos. Zu der Zeit fing man an, zu predigen von des HERRN Namen.

A son was born to Seth also, and he gave him the name Enosh. Then men began to call upon the name of the Lord.
