1 M ein Kind, so du willst meine Rede annehmen und meine Gebote bei dir behalten,

My son, if you receive my sayings and store up my teachings within you,

2 d aß dein Ohr auf Weisheit achthat und du dein Herz mit Fleiß dazu neigest;

make your ear open to wisdom. Turn your heart to understanding.

3 j a, so du mit Fleiß darnach rufest und darum betest;

If you cry out to know right from wrong, and lift your voice for understanding;

4 s o du sie suchest wie Silber und nach ihr froschest wie nach Schätzen:

if you look for her as silver, and look for her as hidden riches;

5 a lsdann wirst du die Furcht des HERRN verstehen und Gottes Erkenntnis finden.

then you will understand the fear of the Lord, and find what is known of God.

6 D enn der HERR gibt Weisheit, und aus seinem Munde kommt Erkenntnis und Verstand.

For the Lord gives wisdom. Much learning and understanding come from His mouth.

7 E r läßt's den Aufrichtigen gelingen und beschirmt die Frommen

He stores up perfect wisdom for those who are right with Him. He is a safe-covering to those who are right in their walk.

8 u nd behütet die, so recht tun, und bewahrt den Weg seiner Heiligen.

He watches over the right way, and He keeps safe the way of those who belong to Him.

9 A lsdann wirst du verstehen Gerechtigkeit und Recht und Frömmigkeit und allen guten Weg.

Then you will understand what is right and good, and right from wrong, and you will know what you should do.

10 D enn Weisheit wird in dein Herz eingehen, daß du gerne lernst;

For wisdom will come into your heart. And much learning will be pleasing to your soul.

11 g uter Rat wird dich bewahren, und Verstand wird dich behüten,

Good thinking will keep you safe. Understanding will watch over you.

12 d aß du nicht geratest auf den Weg der Bösen noch unter die verkehrten Schwätzer,

You will be kept from the sinful man, and from the man who causes much trouble by what he says.

13 d ie da verlassen die rechte Bahn und gehen finstere Wege,

You will be kept from the man who leaves the right way to walk in the ways of darkness,

14 d ie sich freuen, Böses zu tun, und sind fröhlich in ihrem bösen, verkehrten Wesen,

from the one who is happy doing wrong, and who finds joy in the way of sin.

15 w elche ihren Weg verkehren und folgen ihrem Abwege;

His ways are not straight and are not good.

16 d aß du nicht geratest an eines andern Weib, an eine Fremde, die glatte Worte gibt

You will be saved from the strange woman, from the sinful woman with her smooth words.

17 u nd verläßt den Freund ihrer Jugend und vergißt den Bund ihres Gottes

She leaves the husband she had when she was young, and forgets the agreement with her God.

18 ( denn ihr Haus neigt sich zum Tod und ihre Gänge zu den Verlorenen;

For her house goes down to death, and her steps lead to the dead.

19 a lle, die zu ihr eingehen, kommen nicht wieder und ergreifen den Weg des Lebens nicht);

None who go to her return again, and they do not find the paths of life.

20 a uf daß du wandelst auf gutem Wege und bleibst auf der rechten Bahn.

So may you walk in the way of good men, and keep to the paths of those who are right and good.

21 D enn die Gerechten werden im Lande wohnen, und die Frommen werden darin bleiben;

For those who are right with God will live in the land. The men without blame will stay in it,

22 a ber die Gottlosen werden aus dem Lande ausgerottet, und die Verächter werden daraus vertilgt.

but the sinful will be destroyed from the land, and those who are not faithful will be taken away from it.
